Friendly people, ideal location for a family visit.
We’ve stayed before, which should give an idea of our feelings. The cottage is warm, comfortable, well equipped and has its own parking space.

Family stay
Excellent stay at this beautiful quayside cottage! Very clean and lots of up to date features. The location is amazing - we walked with our kids to westward Ho!, about 3 miles. Lovely walk along the cliff/beach/golf course. Easy 5 min car drive there as well. I have only good things to say about our stay, I would say that with 6 of us in the little courtyard garden it was very packed!! Nice to have an outside space to have a drink though. Fantastic overall!

Great Location
There is no doubt that the location of this property is stunning and we enjoyed the views over the estuary. We had some bad luck in that the boiler needed some attention and we were without hot water for 3 days (until we found out about the emersion heater), but that could have happened to anyone and the owners had the boiler repaired as soon as it was only possible. What let the cottage down for us was the general cleanliness (especially of the kitchen). We bought some Flash wipes and cleaned the kitchen work surface and the dirt left on the cloth told it's own story. We also had to buy some new cooking pans from the local supermarket because the pans provided should have been thrown away long ago (unless you like black bits from the pan bottom in your scrambled eggs!). Unfortunately, the beds were too ''bouncy'' and small for us so we slept in separate beds after the first sleepless night. I also need to mention that, on arrival, we opened the draws in the bedroom dressing table to put away our clothes and found - how shall I put it - a ladies pleasuring toy in the top drawer (presumable left by the previous guests)! We did in fact leave this ''toy'' in an envelope when we left to advise the cleaner to ensure that the drawers are checked between guests. We wondered if parking would be an issue, but it wasn't. For the first 4 nights we parked right in front of the cottage, and the next 2 nights close by in the car park as some inconsiderate person had parked in front of the garage (where a sign clearly requested access to the garage at all times), Luckily, the vehicle had moved on for our final night so we managed to park outside for loading up early on the morning of departure. This is a lovely property and with a few small changes I would definitely recommend a stay here.

Everything we could need or want.
Great location on the Quay. Fully equipped kitchen. Clean. Beds could do with new mattress as were a little lumpy, as was the sofa. All in all though a great cottage and would definitely return.

About the host

Hosted by Mark Hedden

Host profile image
Halsbury has been in the Hedden family for four generations now and is used for our family holidays. We believe it is the ideal place to stay & enjoy the stunningly beautiful North Devon coast, whatever the time of year. In fact we have many people who return year after year.

Halsbury is situated on the Quay, with magnificent, uninterrupted views across the river from the upstairs living room. You'll never tire of watching the tide's ebb and flow & comings and goings on the water.

The house is superbly furnished & equipped with everything we think is needed for an easy self catering holiday. What's more, Halsbury is within a minute's walk of the shops, pubs and art galleries.

Halsbury is a wonderful house, full of history and ideal for all visitors.

Why they chose this property

Halsbury was originally bought by our great, great grandfather who ran a shop at the back of the house. Halsbury is now owned by my father, Mark who was born in Appledore.

The house is in a perfect location for many reasons. Being on The Quay, the views and outlook are stunning. Across the water is a lovely sandy beach - ideal for children.

A short walk along the quay, 'George Sands' is a great beach for dog walking at low tide. The 'Burrows' is another fantastic walking area, a short car ride away. Nearby Westward Ho! is superb for surfing, windsurfing and kite surfing. The world famous Croyde Bay is a 30min drive.

For wet weather days, try the swimming pool at Northam (a couple of miles away) or try Atlantic Village with it's outlet shops and indoor & outdoor play areas for the kids.

What makes this property unique

The position of Halsbury couldn't be better. It is right at the heart of the action in Appledore.

The ferry across the river to the lovely sandy beach of Instow is just along the Quay.

There are pubs, restaurants, cafes and numerous art galleries within very easy walking distance.

The narrow roads behind the Quay (mostly inaccessible by car & hence almost always traffic free and child friendly) offer you a chance to discover some the very old history of Appledore and pop into a range of shops.

Take a walk over to West Appledore via Irsha Street to see the charming ex-fisherman's cottages. Stop at the Seagate or The Beaver which both offer a good range of meals whilst taking in the views across the water. Both pubs welcome dogs.

Westward Ho! just down the road has great surf and is also suitable for children.
