Character holiday Cottage in Bucks Mills, sleeps 4, near beach
About Joanna Stevens
Bucks Mills was one of our favourite villages and beaches and we were very excited when we saw that most of the village cottages were being sold to pay death duties. We bought the cottage when it was auctioned and used it for family and friends, we now also let it but it is still used by our family and grandchildren.
Joanna Stevens purchased this Cottage in 1983
Why Joanna Stevens chose Buck's Mills
Bucks Mills is my favourite village and cottage. We have had some lovely family summer holidays here and also winter weekends.
What makes this Cottage unique
Superb unspoilt village location on quiet ' No through road' to beach. Own garden and parking in road outside cottage. Cottage is over 150 years old and is grade 2 listed.
100% refund if cancelled at least 60 days before arrival date. 50% refund if cancelled at least 30 days before arrival date.
Quaint, quiet and peaceful
Picture postcard cottage in a perfect quiet village location near the sea. Fully equipped with everything you may need on holiday. Wifi very useful as we had no phone signal inside the cottage (thats not a bad thing), and good enough to stream Netflix etc.
Great base to explore local attractions and some great walks on the doorstep, just be aware the cottage is in a valley and walks involve hills some of which are very steep in places.
Owners John and Jo were very helpful with regular information via email.
We really enjoyed our week at your cottage and would holiday there again, the only negative for us was the lack of shower but thats just a personal preference.

My stay 10-17 August 2019
The cosy cottage is very quaint with a small bridge at the front to cross a stream and a garden full butterflies, the walk down to the beach although very steep is through the quiet village of Bucks Mill with lovely cottages a long the way and the valley covered in woodland. When at low tied there was a gully of sand between the rock pools for easy access to swim.
The location was great for the A39 to discover South towards Bude places such as Hartland Quay with magnificent rock formations and Sandymouth a beautiful sandy beach with big waves and RNLI present and National Trust free parking. And to the North for provisions Asda was 10 mins away towards Bideford and Westward Ho! also has a lovely stretch of sand.
Thank you for your lovely review Conrad. Glad the butterflies were in the the garden, they are amazing. Hope to welcome you again.

Lovely cottage in a peaceful location
Lovely quiet cottage in a very peaceful location. The beach is only a few minutes walk down a hill albeit quite steep with good rockpools. Very comfortable cottage with everything you need. Right on the SW coastal path for good walks and excellent sandy beaches nearby.

Coast/Beach/situated within 'North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty'
5 minute walk to beach. Beach has sand patches and rock pools - children love it. Super walks from cottage along footpaths and Coastal Path. It is suitable for beach fishing and fishing trips can be booked in Bideford and Clovelly.
A car is recommended but not essential. The nearest bus stop is about 1 mile with buses to Bideford, Barnstaple and beyond in one direction and Bude in the other. National Express buses run from London to Bideford and then local buses stop at Bucks Cross (1 mile from cottage).
Nearest airport is Exeter - 68 miles/109 km away.
Bideford 9 miles
Barnstaple 18 miles
Clovelly 4 miles
The village has an interesting history, at one time most of the inhabitants were called Braund, rumour has it that they were descendants from a Spanish survivor from the Spanish Armada and the cottages were build from wreakage from Armada ships. The Burton Art Gallery in Bideford is worth a visit as it also has a museum of Bideford and district. There is a lot of details about two artists, Judith Auckland and Mary Stella Edwards, who lived in Bucks Mills. There is also a very good restaurant in the gallery. When we first went to Bucks Mills there were three Braunds still living there, Noel, Stella and Grenville who ran the village shop with his wife Edith. Sadly they have all left and the shop is closed. Many Braunds lived in our cottage, the last one being Melinda who lived there from 1930 - 1972 with her husband who was a chaffeur. Noel told us that one family who lived in our cottage had nine children!
There is a thriving Braund Society (www.braundsociety.org) and Braunds and their descendents all over world keep in touch. They have an annual reunion with various events including dressing in period clothing. One year a victorian village school was set up on our lawn complete with 'victorian' children.
The North Devon Coastpath crosses the village, so it's possible to walk it in both direction. The village of Clovelly one way or through woods and fields to Peppercombe in the other directions. There are other delightful footpaths in all directions from the villahge.
There is a shop in the next village for papers, pasties and some groceries about 1 mile away, but all major supermarkets will deliver online orders. Bideford is 9 miles away and has two supermarkets, many restaurants and Atlantic Village (outlet shopping).
Available to rent for holidays from £295 per week. The cottage is also available for short breaks out of season and at short notice, from £85 per night, min two nights (price for cottage not per person) - this price includes heating and electricity.
