Photos and Description of this Abondance holiday chalet

Chalet in Abondance, Haute Savoie, Rhone-Alpes, France - Peaceful Location, Village Centre 1 Minute Walk, Skiing 8 Mins Away By Car Or Foot

Chalet Alys is situated in the centre of the ancient and charming mountain village of Abondance. Summer and winter the mountain views from every window of the Chalet and Apartment are breath-taking. It is centrally located only 1 min from the shops and bars but very quiet with very little traffic and street noise. The road is only used by residents and the school during school hours. The property has a garden and four balconies for enjoying outdoor meals in summer and a hot chocolate in the crisp air in winter. The garden is secure for your children or pets and the staircases are safe for younger children with supervision. There is a downstairs bedroom and bathroom if anyone in your group has mobility challenges. The majority of our neighbours live in Abondance all year round and are friendly and welcoming to visitors which are important for Abondance. Our property host is French and speaks excellent English to help when needed or ask questions. In winter you can enjoy walking and cross country skiing straight from the Chalet door and skiing downhill a few minutes’ walk or drive/bus away. In summer, walking, cycling, history, tree top adventures, cheese making, markets and Lake Leman (Lake Geneva) at Evian des Bain, awaits you. The village has shops, bars, restaurants, ski station, ESF and bus which are all just a 1 minute walk from the chalet.

Chalet Alys was renovated in 2012 and was awarded 4* by the Haute Savoie Tourtism board.

About Martin Chapman

We are Jackie and Martin and our young adult son and daughter. We live in the Cotswolds and enjoy village life. Jackie is a University Professor and Martin runs his own business. We decided to buy Chalet Alys to create a contemporary space inside a traditional chalet. We love visiting Abondance and spend about 10 weeks a year there summer and winter. We hope to share our lovely home in the mountains with like minded people.

Martin Chapman purchased this chalet in 2011

Why Martin Chapman chose Portes du Soleil

Martin and I found Abondance and Chalet Alys in the summer of 2011 when we spent a week touring around the Haute Savoie looking for a place to call home. We have skiied in Chatel and the Portes du Soliel several times and knew we could rely on it to provide for our skiing and holiday needs and those of our friends and family.

Finding Abondance was the best part of that trip. In Chalet Alys we found our project and in Abondance we found a traditional, charming, warm French village. Our neighbours, the shop owners and the artisans we have worked with are warm, generous and encouraging people. We love that you can ski for a morning, walk along the River Dranse summer and winter, pop out to the Place du Village for a coffee or beer and always the sun seems to shine.

As time has passed and we have explored the area more we find new treasures close to Abondance such as Saint Jean d'Aulps, Aigle and the surrounding village ski stations in Switzerland, Lake Leman, Lac Des Plagne and Refuge des Tinderet.

What makes this chalet unique

In the Chalet you will enjoy a spacious home with two large communal rooms for gathering over breakfast and in the evenings to share the days events. The large log fire keeps you cosy and the underfloor heating in the kitchen and bathrooms is a real treat. All bedrooms are en suite and have great views of the surrounding mountains. There are also areas to find the peace and quiet you sometimes need on a busy group holiday such as the snug landing, the many balconies and of course your own confortable rooms.

The garden is safe, spacious and secure to enjoy outdoor dining, ball games and in winter building snow men.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Mrs W March 2012:Just spent a week at Chalet Alys in Abondance and had an amazing time, the chalet was very comfortable, wonderful open fire and a well equipped kitchen. Abondance is a fantastic place to stay a true French village with a good selection of places to eat and an amazing bakery. This is a place to stay even after all the snow has gone.

Mrs G March 2012:The village is delightful, and everyone was very friendly. I recommend the Poellee at Le Petit Bistrot just down the road, but go with a big appetite!

We had a fabulous holiday at Chalet Alys. It was so well equipped, a real home from home experience. There were 8 of us to cater for and we enjoyed cooking in the beautiful kitchen which had everything that you needed. Perfectly situated, seconds from the village and haymaking in the fields at the back. Super for morning runs with our dogs! We would love to return!

A wonderful relaxing and interesting holi

  • 5 of 5

Excellent, clean, spacious and comfortable 5 star accommodation, nestled in a scenic back drop, quiet and peaceful yet seconds away from bakeries, restaurants and bars.

The bedrooms were spacious, clean and comfortable with luxurious en suite facilities. The kitchen and dining facilities left nothing to be desired and the lounge was perfect for relaxing and accommodated many people comfortably. It was nice to sit out in the garden in the evening.

Abondance was close to many towns on lake Geneva by bus or car and with ski lifts close by to take you to the mountains for walking or mountain biking. I can only imagine how good it will be in the ski season. The weekend market and the Music festival added something special to the experience.

I especially liked the clean & spacious accommodation, the picturesque town, the mountain scenery and fresh bread & croissants for breakfast each day

I can't think of anything I did not enjoy during my week in Chalet alys it was wonderful.

Fab Chalet

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous stay at Chalet Alys in Abondance a couple of weeks ago. The Alps in summer are amazing, Abondance in particular has lots to offer summer visitors. The chalet was luxurious, well appointed and very centrally located for local shops and restaurants, and in winter right near the ski lift. We would certainly go back to the same chalet. Thanks, a great stay.

an 'abundance' of good things

  • 5 of 5

Beautifully renovated chalet, quality finishings, gorgeous bathrooms!

Situated in a delightful village, ideal spot for exploring both the mountains and Lake Geneva. lots of good bars and restaurants within walking distance.

In summer great area for walking (and downhill cycling!)

Pretty chalets, lovely scenery, cows with bells... 'the hills are alive!'...

Would love to go back when it's all covered in snow.

Highly recommend

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Chalet Alys was so relaxing, very comfortable, everything you would need for a long or short stay, making it all very easy - underfloor heating so never cold, bedroom and bathroom excellent (there is also a downstairs bedroom/bathroom), kitchen, dining, lounge all excellent. Boot room/drying room made it so easy with rear access so did not have to drip through the house, so could just take off the wet gear and leave it to dry in the lovely warm area. There is also a garden at the rear and side and car parking. Great to be able to step outside and there you were, in the valley, trees on the mountainside above you, snow everywhere. Listing description accurate, property clean and well maintained, excellent customer service. First thing in the morning, off to the bread shop for fresh croissant and bread for the day - 5 min walk. So near the heart of the village and yet so peaceful. Ski lift a walk away - workers there so helpful when trying to get on lift with a toddler! Market on Sunday morning in centre of village, locals so friendly, easy to shop and find what you wanted, places to eat out in village, play area to take toddler too. Some of the pathways or lack of could be a bit difficult with a pushchair, but all in all - Magic.

Wonderful Stay

  • 5 of 5

My wife, one year old son and I stayed as guests of the owners with some other family. The chalet was lovely with excellent facilities - especially the bathrooms and the kitchen was also very well equipped. Abondance is a quiet village and it was nice to not be in a noisy ski resort. That said, skiing was only a short drive away and there were even a small number of slopes in the village which were useful to get re-accustomed to skiing after a break of a few years. We then ventured out onto the main areas of porte-du-soleil which had excellent skiing and plenty of route options so we could push ourselves in the mornings and then take easier routes home when tired. It is accessible by transfer buses from Geneva if you prefer not to hire a car and there are ski buses to access the resorts.
