About Sardinella52

My husband and I are both very excited in welcoming you in our property. We have renovated this old townhouse to the best of our capabilities and we are sure that you will enjoy your stay with us. I am an Architect and have dedicated a lot of time and effort into this restoration venture. Ramon my husband works in insurance and has physically worked hard in the house.

We love travelling and meeting new people.

We will be pleased to always help you and recommend any places of interest, restaurants, etc.. and can offer our help in booking rental cars, transfers or tours.

Sardinella52 purchased this house in 2007

Why Sardinella52 chose Birgu

As it is in the centre of this lovely historical city, with breath taking views and seconds from the waterfront and Valletta.

What makes this house unique

Close to all amenities, places of interest and several bars and restaurants.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We spent three glorious weeks in this very interesting old property, in fact we enjoyed it so much we booked to return next year before we left. It is ideally situated, close to the friendly shops, Birgu square, and overlooking the Marina and Senglea from the roof terrace. The interior of the house is nicely furnished, and every need was catered for. The 3 Cities we found most interesting, packed with history if so desired. We found it fascinating. There are several good restaurants, a few small bars, regular public transport to other nice areas, and good walking, Valletta is only a 10 minute ferry ride away which in our opinion makes this holiday ideal, quiet and peaceful on one hand, or a hop across to the busy Capital.

The room is only 6 courses high which makes it a cosy space to unwind or read a book. There is also a double bed in the room

Amazing place with great owner!

  • 5 of 5

We highly recommend this rental! The house itself is lovely, with authentic stonework, ceiling beams and the first floor stone stairs actually have a slight dip in them due to being worn down over centuries (this is amazing to Americans as we don't often see stone stairs and haven't had time for them to wear down). The bed was very comfortable and there is an in-room air conditioner to fight the heat and humidity at bedtime.

All amenities were available, including hair dryer, iron and ironing board, even some various electrical plug converters for appliances from other countries. Best of all though were the tiny details that made our stay so relaxing: the bathroom had toilet paper and other toiletries like shampoo, conditioner, soap, cotton swabs, etc. The kitchen had all necessary dishes/utensils/cookware, plus paper towels, coffee, tea, various spices and olive oil. Ramon had even stocked some ham, cheese, bottled water, and some biscuits/cookies!

The hosts' consideration extended further, with flexibility on our arrival time (our ride was late and Ramon patiently waited for us in the square), and made arrangements for a drop-off at the airport upon our departure.

The only drawback for some people would be the circular staircase mentioned in the description. It is very steep and narrow and I can see less-agile visitors struggling with it. This was not at all a problem for us -- we found it charming -- but wanted to point it out in case a potential renter is wondering about it.

Beautiful renovated town house

  • 5 of 5

It was in a fabulous location, a short walk to the harbour side, and just next door to a traditional Town Square with a few small shops and restaurants. Lots of little things helped us to make the most of our stay, for example, there was oil and condiments, soaps and shampoos, and a nice little array of food, tea and coffee for our arrival. Ramon collected us from the airport which was a huge bonus, thank you Ramon! He gave us a tour of the area too which was a great help. The roof terrace was a bonus with views over the town and harbour. Best to take everything you need up the spiral staircase in a bag to save going up and down! There is so much to just gaze at, and the ferry is frequent and cheap over to Valletta which is just gorgeous. We took buses to Mdina and down to the Blue Grotto, buy a weekly card, it gets you everywhere. We had a day cruise around the island to The Blue Lagoon and a good harbour tour aswell. There is so much more to see and we will be back. Thank you Ramon for making our stay easy and memorable

Everything we wanted and more

  • 5 of 5

From when we arrived and were picked up at the airport everything was perfect.

The house was charming and very well equipped.

Bed was super comfortable.

Every one around us was friendly and helpful.

It was a perfect location to get everywhere.

We took the water taxi to Valleta every day €2 each way per person.

Buses were great and cheep...get a week pass if you are here for more than a few days.

Good restaurants in the square.

All in all great place would definitely recommend and we will definitely be back.

Lovely house in a charming old location

  • 4 of 5

We stayed here in March. The weather is still a little unpredictable, it was quite windy for most of the stay, however the sun was almost always out. The house is lovely, you get plenty of exercise from the stairs! The view from the roof terrace is amazing. The local square is beautiful with warm and friendly bars and restaurants. We particularly liked DCentre. Here you can get Maltese food, or Italian. The local people are very friendly. You can get the ferry to beautiful Valletta, or to Sleima if you wish but this is one of the more commercialised places - good if you like shopping. I would recommend this accommodation, and it's wonderful host Ramon, he was extremely hospitable and helpful.

Wonderful, convenient, home with character!

  • 5 of 5

Exceptional base for exploring the best of Malta. Not only was the home clean and spacious, the location in the middle of Birgu puts you in the best of locations. Very well equipped with everything you need, the hosts have thought of everything to make your stay effortless. Ramon and Karys were wonderfully helpful, and made us feel like old friends providing not only their home, but great directions, maps, and advice on how best to spend our 4 days on Malta. We will return!

Comfortable, Characterful and Convenient.

  • 5 of 5

Comfortable, well-equipped property with everything you need.

Great location in the centre of Birgu and fantastic views from the roof terrace. A traditional house in a mainly residential area.

Close to bus stop and ferry to Valletta for exploring the rest of Malta.

Food shops, bars, restaurants etc close by.

Great hosts, picked us up from the airport and gave us an orientation drive around the area.

This property was recommended to us and we would happily recommend it to others.

Plenty of activities are held during the year including the famous Feast of the Patron St. Lawrence held every year on the 10th August with the spectacular Notte di San Lorenzo on the eve of the Feast (fireworks from sea). The feast of St. Domenic is also held around the same period. The Birgu Fest is also very famous and held every October where one of the nights is Birgu by Candlelight, which is a magical night not to be missed.

Plenty of other activities during the year include concerts, shows, exhibitions, folk and cultural activities in the Square and along the waterfront. Processions and exhibitions are held during the Christmas, Lent and Easter period.

Both local banks and main Police Station may be found in Cospicua which is the neighbouring city. General stores, pharmacy, doctors' clinic, dentist, etc... may be found in the centre of the city. There is also a local taxi service centrally located.
