About Gillie Farquhar-Thomson

I grew up in Birdham and moved back with my husband Richard 30 years ago. Our three children had a marvellous time growing up in this beautiful part of the world. They took full advantage of the sailing and wind surfing facilities which are on our door step. They loved Chichester with its famous theatre, cathedral and excellent shops. We kept ponies in our three acre paddock followed by a small flock of sheep. We built the barn for hay storage and lambing. In 2007, with children and sheep all gone we decided to turn the barn into two luxurious holiday homes to sleep four in each unit, Baytree and Foxglove. When the sound proof double doors are open the cottages merge into one, making a wonderful holiday home for eight people.

Gillie Farquhar-Thomson purchased this cottage in 1970

Why Gillie Farquhar-Thomson chose West Sussex

Birdham is in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Chichester Harbour is an eight minute stroll away along country lanes. We have two marinas and there are wonderful harbour side walks. We love the sea and sailing which we have done all our lives. Chichester dates back to Roman times and is the most beautifully preserved city. There are the ancient Roman walls surrounding the city, the cathedral, theatre, modern art gallery, fantastic shops and restaurants. Three miles to the north of Chichester is the South Downs National Park. We have it all!! including a most beautiful sandy beach at West Wittering which is three miles away.

What makes this cottage unique

The holiday cottages are set overlooking our four acre meadow. The meadow is surrounded by trees and for the use of our visitors. We are minutes from the Chichester Harbour. The cottages face south south west and are full of sunshine. The wild life is amazing. We have deer, foxes, rabbits, squirrels and a huge variety of birds which can be viewed from the living room.

Superb holiday cottage

  • 5 of 5

What a delightful cottage! We were so comfortable and made very welcome by the owner and if there had been any problems she was more than happy for us to contact her. Spotlessly clean and although we didn't cook there was plenty of equipment to do so. We spent 9 days there and really didn't want to leave. A pretty garden with garden furniture and stunning views out onto a vast expanse. Thoroughly recommend a stay there.

Wonderful weekend

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful weekend in Foxglove. The weekend was a birthday treat for my 79 years young mum, and we couldn't have found anywhere better. Everything has been thought of in this property, and it is spotlessly clean and extremely comfortable. It is the first time I have ever stayed anywhere where I slept perfectly the first night. We would happily live in this house and will almost definitely be back. Being set in such a lovely location we would love to return when the weather is warmer. I would highly recommend a stay.

Christmas 2015-A super place for a break

  • 5 of 5

Stylish, comfortable and generously equipped. The property was even better than the description. We rented both properties and the owner made us feel very welcome even providing Christmas trees! The design and layout were excellent and having the use of both ovens and dishwashers made our stay even easier.

The properties were very clean and well appointed, the views were lovely. The local area is great for walks and sailing. We went to The Witterings and Bosham and had an excellent time.

We would thoroughly recommend the property, in fact we are thinking of coming again in the summer.

Simply the best

  • 5 of 5

In August we spent a week with our daughter and family in this spacious and superbly appointed barn conversion, where every need has been catered for. Our grandchildren were free to play in the large paddock fronting the barn. Whilst there is much to see and do in the area it was the peaceful tranquil setting we most enjoyed. Many thanks Gillie providing such a superb base for our holiday.

Wonderful countryside views

  • 5 of 5

We rented the Baytree cottage with the balcony and my daughter and Bridesmaid stayed here the night before and morning of her wedding at the local Southend Barns ( a few minutes away). Standing on the balcony looking at the fantastic view and having her hair done outside whilst looking across fields provided a wonderful start to an amazing day. The cottage is perfect, very well maintained with everything you need, comfortable beds and lots of extras. We will definitely be back.

Perfect for family get together.

  • 5 of 5

Rented both cottages to meet up with our family. Could not have chosen a better location. Our two grandsons 2&4 loved the freedom of the meadow and also watching wildlife, woodpeckers, pheasant, lots of insects and not forgetting George the dog who was also on holiday at the owners house and who came to visit when he was out for a walk and brought his ball so that the boys could throw it for him. The cottages were very well equipped and very clean.

This is a tranquil place to be and will look forward to returning in the future.
