Courtalou is a group of 4 beautifully restored 17th Century cottages in 2 acres of secluded private gardens surrounded by farmland and woods. Set in the rolling hills and gentle valleys of the Lot et Garonne near the Dordogne borders, which boasts a rich history of enchanting castles and medieval towns such as Monpazier, Monflanquin and the famous Bergerac vineyards and gastronomic specialities. Our 1 bedroom sleep 3, 2 bedroom sleeping 5, 3 bedroom sleeping 6 and the main farmhouse sleeps up to 9.
Friendly couple in their late 40's who wish for you to have a stress free and memorable holiday.
Have finally made my dream come true and spend 4 months every year in the sunny Dordogne / Lot et Garonne region. I love having holiday makers to stay and want them to have a fabulous time and to see all the amazing sites that this region has to offer.
Dawn Hillier purchased this farmhouse in 2009
When I first saw Courtalou I instantly fell in love with the stonework of the farmhouse and its cottages and the feeling of being away from It all - just being able to see fields and trees. The only noise you can hear is that of a woodpecker or the tree frogs in the woods. To see deer roaming free across the gardens always makes me smile.
Whilst feeling rural, it is still within very easy reach of Villereal with all its shops, bars, restaurants and pharmacy and there are 3 geogous bakeries in Villereal and 1 within walking distance to Montaut for that morning croissant I so enjoy.
The woods at the end of the drive and plenty of cycle paths and footpaths around made it attractive to me yet just jump in the car and there are many beautiful places to visit.
Having internet is handy so I am able to communicate with friends and family whilst away for the summer months.
The pool is right opposite the cottages and farmhouse so its easy to nip out whenever you feel like it to have a dip or, to relax on one of the floating armchairs in the pool.
There is a good library of dvd's and books so if you just want to stay in one night, cuddle up and watch a good movie its easy to do so.
There are games and puzzles in each gite which are fun to play with friends and family.
If you fancy a bit of sport, there is table tennis and basketball on site too.
10 minutes up the road you can visit the manmade beach and crystal clear lake which all ages of children and adults alike can enjoy including the hire of pedeloes.
There is a private lake some 10 minutes drive away in Lougratte which offers a sandy beach and canoeing / childrens playground, restaurant and water slides etc. The nearest beach is roughly 2 hours drive away on the Atlantic coast.
Our nearest airport is Bergerac Roumaniere which offers flights in from Flybe, Ryan Air and Jet 2. This is a 25 minute drive away and is a very direct route via N21 / D2 / D218. Alternative airports are Bordeaux and Toulousse which are both 2 hours drive away offering flights with Flybe, Ryanair, Air France, British Airways and Monach. Folkestone to Calais is ½ hour via the channel tunnel and then a further 10 hours drive to us however, there are ports at St Malo, Dieppe and Caen.
Villereal town is 5 minutes drive away (around 5kms) with many restaurants / shops and bars and weekly markets. Monflanquin and Monpazier are equal distances (20 minutes drive) and are historical market towns with castles / lakes / magnificent views. The old town of Bergerac is 30 minutes away with gastronomic delights and the river Dordogne. The quaint village ambience of Pujols has amazing views from terraces and superb shops to purchase gifts such as “Prunes”, liqueurs and “canard”.
The nearest supermarket is under 5 minutes drive away and will sell all you need for your holiday. There are weekly markets on a Wednesday and Saturday at Villereal which are open from 9.00am till lunchtime and why not stroll around this village and look at the fabulous church and purchase a delicious cake from the stunning patisserie opposite. Villereal also has chemists / tobacconist and banks with cashpoint facilities. The doctor’s surgery within the village offers an English speaking doctor and there is a vet close by. If you fancy a hack across the countryside towards “Chateau de Biron” with a local horse riding centre or, just have a lesson in their school, these can be arranged. Days out fishing and canoeing are both within 30 minutes drive. I highly recommend the Gouffe de Padirac (The Caves) they are simply marvellous and en route you MUST visit Rocomadour for its entrance through the rock face to the awesome buildings set within – around 1 hours drive.
In this georgous natural countryside enjoy the solitude and peace by simply resting your senses: Mind Body and Soul.
Hiking and cycling are highly recommended and bikes can be delivered for hire to your gite for weekly rental. If you are a bird watcher then you will have a fabulous treat ahead! Whilst walking, you are likely to spot hares, deer, hedgehog, beavers and many different birds of prey. Artists and painters will be inspired by either the rich countryside or the architectural design in local stonework
There is a small farmyard along the lane with goats, piglets, ducks, chickens and horses. Or pick your own sloes, blackberries, Mirabelle plums and cherries from our trees and try making your own jam.
Many motorcyclists have visited as it is a great base for site seeing and touring around.
Alternatively, simply relax and enjoy the naturally slower pace of life at “Courtalou” – its really majical.
