This beautifully renovated 18th century Charentaise stone farmhouse is in a beautiful setting on the edge of a hamlet and surrounded by unspoilt countryside. It has been sensitively restored and contains all the modern comforts one would find in their own home.

Your private pool is just 5 metres from your back door with an outside patio dining area nearby. The private garden has a large grassed area for outdoor games.

2 of the 5 bedrooms are on the ground floor and all are ensuite.

About malcolm whittaker

My name is Malcolm Whittaker and I have lived in France since 2004. Chez Fauret is my second house renovation. I chose to live in this region because of the climate,the pace of life and because it is so beautiful and this area also has all the amenities within easy reach.

I live on site in separate accommodation and will be here to meet you, show you around and be on hand with information on local activities and events. I try to be discreet, so if you don't need me, you won't see me.

Bed linen and towels are provided so you can travel light, just bring pool towels.

Now that I've finished risking life and limb on the renovation, I spend my time playing golf at the nearby course, socialising with friends or painting artistic masterpieces (ha ha), some of which are displayed in the gite.

Why malcolm whittaker chose Charente-Maritime

When I bought Chez Fauret in June 2010 it needed a complete renovation as the last inhabitants were German prisoners of war awaiting repatriation in 1945, passing the time by working in the surrounding fields. The house was a blank canvas that allowed me to create an apartment for myself and a spacious holiday home for guests that I would be happy to stay in.

Its location strikes the right balance between town and country with a 10 minute drive to a town with all the amenities.

The surrounding countryside has an abundance of wildlife, such as deer, hawks, kestrels and harriers.There is a buzzard nearby who has refined his hunting technique and now sits on a road sign waiting for his food to wander by and remains there, eyeing you intently as you drive by, just feet away.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Chez Fauret is ideal for anyone looking for a spacious holiday home and if you want to eat out and socialise but don't want to drive, my next door neighbour Gregoire runs a bar and restaurant in the evenings and occasionally provides live entertainment by local musicians.

Your own exclusive swimming pool is just 5 metres from your back door, with an ample supply of loungers. The patio has a large dining area with tables, chairs and parasols. As a security measure the pool is fenced to prevent unsupervised access.

Outside: The private swimming pool is 7.5 x 4.5 metres and 1.1 metres deep, with a decking surround and furnished with ample sun loungers and seating. The pool area is fenced to prevent unsupervised access. There is a dining area with parasols and a gas barbecue. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen, bedding, hand and bath towels supplied, changed weekly. Pool towels not supplied. Property cleaned on changeover. Other: South facing salon with seating for 7 & separate cloakroom. Original beam & fireplace (non functioning). The chimney breast shows a cartoon drawn by the last occupants,German POWs stationed here in 1945 who worked in the fields prior to repatriation.

Charming, quiet place

We stayed at Chez Fauret for one week. We were three families, with four young children between us. We had a delightful time. The house is very large, and afforded privacy for each family. At the same time, it was sufficiently large to have all three families in the kitchen to enjoy a meal. There was ample space in the outside (and around the pool) for children to play. Te view over the valley from the back of the house is wonderful.

Malcolm is a very fine host. Attentive and accommodating, but largely unseen.

Montendre is a short drive a way, which we found convenient for runs to the market, etc.

My wife and I have stayed at vacationn properties in many places and this was as nice and smoothly run as any. Highly recommended.

Wonderfully spacious hideaway

We were three couples with children and stayed for a week. It was an amazing gite, incredibly spacious with plenty of living space for everyone. The kids had a blast playing with the kittens and out in the garden (while grown ups played bacci) although the weather was a bit too cold to brave the unheated pool.

We were a 10 minute drive from a big intermarche in montendre and made meals at the house regularly. Next door the restaurant chez Gigi was fantastic - really great atmosphere. Malcolm offered to babysit the kids!!

We would happily stay here again.

Supberb property in ideal location

Well equipped spacious property. Pool just outside the back door is so convenient. Wonderful views. Ideal location for visiting beaches, big towns and the vineyards. Lovely market in Montendre. Will be back! Highly recommended.

Spacious house in a lovely setting.

We booked this house for a weekend for a family gathering and it was ideal. It is a lot bigger than it looks from the outside - all the rooms are vast and suited us perfectly with 4 couples and 5 children we had ample space. The kids loved playing in the garden and the pool area is lovely with beautiful views. The house is well equipped and furnished and very comfortable. The owner was extremely friendly and helpful and we would definitely consider staying here again. The only thing that could have improved the experience would have been some written directions to the property plus maybe a sign to the house at the turning up to it to help those with unreliable satnavs!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words and feedback. The sign post is a good idea and will get that sorted asap. I guess the thing with unreliable satnavs is that you don't know that they're unreliable until they get you to a destination that isn't the one you want. What I can do is to prepare a series of directions from the nearest towns and include them on one attachment that can then be used by all as a non tecchie back up.

Ideal for large family group

We booked this gite for a family group of 13, including 5 children, whilst we were attending a wedding nearby. It was ideal for our purposes - there is loads of space inside and out, and the owner, who lives on site,could not have been more helpful and friendly. Highly recommended!

8 minutes by Apache attack helicopter or 55 minutes by car to the beaches at Royan. (helicopter currently unavailable)

The long sandy beaches at Royan are

superb and ideal for children, with pines forests behind and some fantastic fish restaurants nearby.

There is a superb Aqua park less than 15 minutes away in Jonzac, Les Antilles offers a wave pool , water slides, a lagoon, pedalos and more.


A car is essential


Bordeaux 55 minutes

La Rochelle 85 minutes

Bergerac 120 minutes

Nearest Channel port

Caen 6 hours


Nearest town by car is Montendre 10 minutes drive away.Weekly market on Thursdays and night markets during the summer, ditto for Jonzac, 20 minutes away.

You are less than a hour away from the city of Bordeaux and its surrounding vineyards, or the historic towns of Cognac and Angouleme.

For those want to eat out and socialise and sample rural French life but don't want the hassle of driving, my next door neighbour runs a bar and restaurant and occasionally provides live music with local musicians.
