Detached, 19th Century farmhouse in tranquil rural location in the Southern Vendee.
The house was purchased in 2002 and has been substantially refurbished while retaining many original features. Up until 2012 it was a family home and we (and friends)have spent substantial amounts of time there even though we have re-located to the UK. We have enjoyed many vacations and breaks there as it is so easily reached from the channel ports. The man who delivers the oil called it "un coin du paradis" and he should know as he visits many houses in the area!
Dan Price purchased this farmhouse in 2002
The area enjoys many hours of sunshine, there is much to do for all ages. We were attracted to the variety of landscape and countryside. The Vendee has more than a 100 miles of sandy beaches (many of which are “blue flagged”) edged with dunes and pine woods. The department also has churches and abbeys, museums, and—for nature lovers—thousands of marked footpaths, a signposted bicycle route running along the coastal mudflats, and marshes (Marais Poitevin) that attract unusual birds. Inland, there is the forested area around the village of Mervent and the rolling countryside of the Bocage.
The house is an ideal base for those who enjoy cycling, touring (the chateaux of the Loirs are only a few hours drive away) and walking. There are several books and information on local walks and as the roads have little traffic - safe at all times. It is not unusual not to see a car in the surrounding lanes for days.At the same time Saintes, Cognac, La Rochelle, Noirmoutier and Poitiers are all easily accessible. It is handily placed midway between the wine growing areas of the Loire and Bordeaux and you can get to St. Emilion and back in a day!
This is the first year of letting this property.
Property is available for lettings all year round.
We were thrilled with our stay at La Ménarderie. The house and garden are beautiful - the photo's don't do them justice. Everything was clean and well maintained. We particularly enjoyed access to the family library and games - it was clear that this house had previously been a family home, which was lovely for a holiday rental. We were lucky enough to travel during a heatwave so the pool certainly came in handy! Our group consisted of four adults and two three-year-olds. There was plenty for us to do in the surrounding area. Our highlights were kayakking in Mervent, visiting the coast and the local markets. The team were very friendly and accommodating and we felt very welcome.
Fantastic property, very clean and everything you could possibly need was available to borrow/use. Easy to find from directions provided. Totally secluded and blissfully quiet - perfect for relaxing and enjoying the beautiful pool and gardens. We couldn't have asked for anything more and we have stayed in numerous other properties in this area of France before - this one was the best so far. Highly recommended, we would definitely return. Customer Service provided was excellent and the photos represented the house 100%.
Easy access to Mervent Forest for cycling and kayaking etc. and sightseeing in the surrounding areas.
This was our first holiday to France we usually do a all inclusive package holiday so we we're unsure what to expect. We travelled with out 3 children age 11,7 & 4 with also my disabled dad. The journey to the house was very easy, and once the village quite easy to find with the directions supplied. We were absolutely blown away with the accommodation, everything we needed and even more was supplied, the garden and pool were lovely the children spent most of the holiday in it. The house isn't overlooked it is very private which is just what we were looking for in a holiday. When we needed a bit of socialisation we just drive about 10mins to the nearest town. Sandra and Eddie were our port of call if anything was needed and they were just a phone call away and very helpful. We will definitely be returning I the future and. I would recommend this house for anyone who wants a rural relaxing holiday.
The spectacular Vendeen beaches are just over an hour away to the west. La Tranche sur Mer and Les Conches being the nearest.
La Rochelle airport is 65 minutes with Nantes a little further and Poitiers (and Futuroscope) a good 90 minutes. St. Malo is a three hour drive, Calais six and a half with others somewhere in between. There is a TGV station at Niort (on the Paris La Rochelle route) which is a little under an hour away. The house is 30 minutes from the A83.
The village is a ten minute walk, the nearest town is a five minute drive. The forest of the Mervent and the Vendee valley are a short drive away as are the picturesque villages/towns of Vouvant, Mouillon en Pareds, Cheffois and Fontenay le Comte. There are popular weekly markets at Fontenay and Coulonges. Puy du Fou is only 30 minutes away.
There is good cycling (the Vendee has a well marked system of dedicated cycle ways), walking (there are many walks directly from the house), canoeing, boating, parc d'acrobaties, horse riding/pony trekking, golf and other activities are available nearby.
La Chataigneraie has several supermarkets, restaurants, banks and pharmacies. There are many restaurants in the area including a traditional Vendeen restaurant which is only a ten minute walk from the house.
