Photos and Description of this Ballynastraw holiday house

Rural mountain family vacation close to the borders Wexford/Carlow/Wicklow

This beautiful newly constructed holiday vacation Dormer Bungalow with 4 spacious bedrooms, 3 well appointed bathrooms + excellent formal/informal living is nestled in a whisper quiet rural/hilly/mountainous/farming community. The elevation allows for sweeping views across to famous Mount Leinster & the unspoilt countryside. The home will appeal to those who seek peace, quiet, tranquillity & picturesque landscapes (ideal if you are wishing to escape from the stress of modern day living).

The property is in close proximity to the town of Bunclody (River Slaney) & on the borders of Co Carlow and Co Wexford + just over an hours drive from Dublin.

Local amenities incl golf clubs (The South East of Ireland being a golfers paradise), fishing (River Slaney), hiking(Wicklow Way), cycling, restaurants, famous villages i.e. Clonegal (Huntington Castle) & Shillelagh. Towns - Borris, Carlow, Enniscorthy, Wexford + the historical city of Kilkenny (beer & castle).

Check out or

for further infomation on the local area.

Hiking, walking and hang-gliding: Distance:The Wicklow Way. Traditionally the Wicklow Way is walked from north to south, beginning at Marlay Park in South Dublin and ending in Clonegal, Co. Carlow. The Wicklow Way can be completed on day trips, covering sections and can be a serious test of physical endurance'.

Picturesque Mount Leinster is the highest mountain in the province of Leinster, Ireland and is the highest of the Blackstairs Mountains at 796 metres (2,605 ft). The mountain is most often climbed from the Nine Stones, a landmark point at the foot of Mount Leinster, about 8 miles east of Borris.

Mount Leinster has been used in stages of the Tour of Ireland.

Mt Leinster is a internationally renowned location as well as being a multi-directional site for both hang-gliding and para-gliding during the months of March to October.

Special day trips: (A) Powerscourt House And Gardens is one of Europe's great treasures & Ireland's most famous house & gardens. Gracing the Wicklow Mountains, Powerscourt, a heritage property with a surprising difference, is one of the most beautiful country estates in Ireland.

(B) Altamont Garden, known as the most romantic garden in Ireland is an enchanting blend of formal an informal gardens located on a 100 acre estate. Whilst still little known, it ranks in the top ten of Irish gardens and is often referred to as 'the jewel in Ireland's gardening crown'.

(C) County Wicklow is rightly known as the Garden of Ireland, such is its majestic beauty in so many forms. Famous for the incredible mountain ranges that are contained within such a small area, Wicklow has many other attractions that add to the desire to explore this place, none more so than the village of Avoca and the famous 'Meeting of the Waters'. Avoca Village was the location of the very popular BBC television series “Ballykissangel'.

Great house with fantastic well maintained, clean and modern facilities. In an excellent location just about 5 minutes drive from Bunclody which has several supermarkets to get all your groceries for your stay.

Also great location within easy driving distance of Kilkenny, Enniscorthy and Waterford.

I would highly recommend this house to anyone wanting to visit this beautiful part of Ireland.

Spacious house in great location, perfect for day trips across the region

  • 4 of 5

After another vrbo property cancelled on us 4 days before our trip, Paul was very helpful, prompt and reliable in arranging our stay at his property. We were met in Bunclody and drove up to the house which is just 5 minutes outside of Bunclody. The house is very spacious, there is Wi Fi and a lovely fireplace. The views across the mountains are wonderful, no matter what the weather. The beds have really good matresses and duvets, so you get a good night's sleep. The kitchen is well equipped, there was also washing powder etc. for the laundry room. The location of the house is great, you can explore all the sights of the region (Powerscourt, Gelandalough, Kilkenny, Waterford, Wexford), most sight are within an hour's drive. Bunclody itself has some nice pubs, several supermarkets, including an Aldi and a very good butcher opposite the Aldi. The house could do with some more decorations such as rugs or pictures, hence only the 4 stars but that might be in the eye of the beholder. Also, a few more current tourist brochures on the region and maybe some board games for those rainy days would be a nice touch. I would fully recommend the house and stay here again. Thank you Paul!

Paul was friendly and efficient before we even arrived.

Then we started our visit being met by Caroline who was so friendly and helpful that we felt at home immediately. The house is spacious, clean and conveniently located close to Bunclody. We had a great week in the area and will definitely be back again soon!

Thank you!

Large house - glorious views

  • 4 of 5

We arranged to meet Joe at the local supermarket and were directed to the house which unfortunatly when we arrived was without power - an occasional problem in the area apparently and obviously no fault of the owner! We also found the plumber in, mending the toilet in the upstairs ensuite. This needed a part so was out of action until a couple of days later. A slight irritation but there were two other toilets to use. Sadly the other upstairs toilet also malfunctioned during the week which meant another visit from the plumber. I think we were just unlucky that week, but as there were only three of us in the house we managed! It seems the plumber does have his own key though!!

The house is quite large, and in fact we didn't really use the second lounge or downstairs bedrooms at all.

The main lounge/kitchen was comfortable and we found everything we needed.

The house did actually feel quite empty though - there are wood and tile floors throughout, and an occasional rug would perhaps make it feel a bit more homely. It was a bit dusty in places too, and the mirrors in the house were a little grimy. Not sure if the cleaning had been rushed after the previous tenants.

We were also unable to access the wifi for the whole of our stay - a bit annoying as we had specifically asked if this was available. Despite advising the owner several times, they were unable to get it to work.

The local town of Bunclody is easily accessible and has a range of shops and supermarkets. There is also easy access to other parts of the area to visit.

We had a good drive in the Wicklow mountains, and a lovely walk at Glendalough.

The old jail at Wicklow is also a great place for a rainy day.

The cottage and location was gorgeous!

  • 5 of 5

We spent our boxing day to New Year 2014-2015 in this lovely cottage. Paul and Joe were lovely hosts and helped us a lot to get settled. As soon as we got the fire lit - the house soon warmed up and stayed toasty for the duration of the holiday.

Joe and Paul didn't rush us out of the cottage on our final day which was lovely considering our ferry return wasn't until 9pm.

We spent a fair amount of time in the golf course in the local village, everyone there was lovely, they served a nice meal and was great to walk with the dogs as there are some gorgeous views.

The local town - Bunclody, was very nice and quiet with some good pubs.

We wandered a lot to surrounding areas such as Waterford, Dublin, Carlow, Mayo etc.

Very relaxing - would recommend.

Thanks again,

Amie & the Smith Family (not forgetting Billie & Pippin the dogs)

(A) Bunclody Golf and Fishing Club which is situated in 300 acres of breathtaking parkland in the former Hall-Dare Estate on the Carlow Wexford border. Newly opened in March 2009, it is already rated in the top 100 courses in Ireland by Golf Digest and is regarded the best ranking course in Co.Wexford. Designed by Jeff Howes the championship course runs over 7000 yards on the Banks of the River Slaney and has a wide variety of holes to satisfy the most discerninging golfer.

The Ring of Hook Drive takes you through some beautifully scenic coastal roads and historic sites.
