About chris whetter
I moved to Sri Lanka from Cornwall,England after spending some time here as a volunteer in 2004 and falling in love with the island. I now live here with my Sri Lankan wife, who is a nurse, and our son. I also teach English in the local area.
chris whetter purchased this Villa in 2011
Why chris whetter chose Beruwala
I designed and built the villa (not with my own hands) in 2011. I love this area of Sri Lanka and enjoy running in the early morning on the beautiful beach of nearby Bentota or seeing the early morning heat haze rising from the paddy fields below the villa We are right in the countryside surrounded by paddy fields and jungle yet close to several small bustling towns and also within easy reach of Colombo to the North and Hikkaduwa, Galle and other beach resorts to the South. The new Express-way now makes us very accessible from Bandaranaike Airport.
What makes this Villa unique
Nisalavila is ideal as a centre where you can enjoy short trips -to the waterfall, Brief gardens, a boat trip on the Madu Ganga river ,a visit to the turtle sanctuary to release baby turtles into the Indian Ocean to name a few. We can also offer trips further afield with our own transport. Then you can return to beautiful tranquil grounds, great homemade food from our internationally trained chef, lovely views from the upstairs dining area and relax in either swimming pool at the end of the day.The local wildlife that visit the garden is a real treat with over 50 varieties of birds spotted by former guests. With just four rooms we offer you a personalised service and are there to enable you to get the most from your holiday. We have recently added a traditional massage hut where you can relax and enjoy Ayurvedic massage from a trained masseur and the views from here are beautiful.

Brilliant holiday location for all the family
My apologies for not responding earlier to the review request but due to a family bereavement shortly after returning to the UK it has not been possible before now.
We had managed to book all 4 rooms for exclusive use and it was an absolutely brilliant holiday location for my myself and my wife as grandparents, our son, daughter-in-law and our 3 grandchildren aged 3, 8 & 9.
We were collected at Colombo airport at the difficult time of 05.00 but our transfer to Beruwala was as promised and seamless in operation. Shan worked tirelessly during our 6 night stay to offer advice and arrange travel in either tuk-tuks or air-conditioned mini-vans to wherever we requested and between Chris and Shan they even managed to borrow a child stroller for us to use walking round on the day we decided to visit Galle.
The food was excellent from start to finish [thank you Tharindu], every day a very extensive breakfast, sometimes just a sandwich or so for a light lunch and then usually a superb curry for our evening meal. Attention to detail was very much on display on the laying of the tables at mealtimes and with the cleaning and making up of beds in all of the rooms. Always at mealtimes, to be seated on the verandah with it's stunning views and peaceful surroundings with many tropical bird calls sounding was a truly delightful location.
The children loved seeing all the many family pets at the villa during our stay and were very upset on leaving them behind. We all had a great time in the swimming pools, although a suggestion to future visitors would possibly to wear socks or lightweight swim shoes to protect feet from being cut on the tiles and natural stone within the pools.
In spite of that, we all said how much we would love to return for another holiday sometime in the future. Finally, a very big thank you to Chris for all the prompt replies that he supplied to my many questions on email prior to us arriving there.
Thank you so much for your super review and fantastic comments which are very much appreciated. We are delighted that your family holiday was such a good experience and that Nisalavila proved to be a super venue for you and your family.
No need for the jelly shoes. I can confirm that our unique infinity pool has now been completely retiled and is looking beautiful .
I will pass on your comments to Shan and Tharindu with regard to the excellent food and great personal service.
Hope to see you again at Nisalavila.
Kind regards.Chris and the team.
Fabulous weekend - stunning Sri Lankan breakfast, magical ponies and a gorgeous peaceful setting. Thanks to all for a lovely stay.
Thank you for taking the time to review us .We are delighted with the 5 star review and really appreciate your comments. The ponies do add a certain something to the natural beauty of Nisalavila and we are glad you found the place so relaxing.
Tharindu does take a pride in his cooking and the traditional Sri Lankan cuisine along with the western options, and I will pass on your comments.
We really enjoyed having you at the villa, and look forward to you coming back.Maybe even for a bit longer next time.!
Very best wishes..Chris and the team.

Beautiful, peaceful and excellent service all round
We were a family of 4 adults and 2 young children (3 and 9 months) having a rendez-vous between the UK and Australia. Planning the logistics was challenging, but it was made so much easier with the help of the villa owners, John and Chris Whetter, who responded immediately to all the questions we posed, organising transport, car seats for the children, cots etc. When we arrived, late at night, we were welcomed by Shan the manager who was discreet but always attentive for the whole week and especially taken with the children. (Loved the towel folding!) The villa was spacious, clean and comfortable and the lovely grounds and pools very well maintained. We booked 2 rooms but had the villa to ourselves as it was off season - a substantial and delicious breakfast was included, but lunch and dinner menus were also available - which we took full advantage of - it was all excellent. The location is off the beaten track, so very quiet and peaceful - but tuk tuks or a car were available on request to take us sight seeing or to the beach. Although it was monsoon season, we enjoyed good weather most of the time.
Thank you John, Chris and Shan for making our family reunion such a success! We had a wonderful time.
Lovely, quiet retreat with great staff
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Nisalavila. After arriving in a thunderstorm a few hours late we were greeted by the driver at the airport and taken the hour or so to Beruwala.
Throughout our 10 day stay nothing was too much trouble for Shan and Tharindu. Chris (owner) was also on site frequently and was invaluable for arranging trips, restaurant bookings and tuk tuk trips around town. The staff were great with the kids and during a thunderstorm that the kids were very scared during Shan even brought the table to the room so we could eat the meal we had ordered down there!
The rooms were clean and spacious, the bedding changed every 2 days and towels provided for the pool and room. The wifi worked well (apart from after the storms but that was a wider problem) and the villa had some portable insect nets for the kids. We had the 2 downstairs rooms.
The food was made to order with a small charge (around £6 per meal), the portions were large and the quality was good, Tharindu the chef deserves special mention. I'd particularly recommend the Sri Lankan curry for 2 with the various veg based curry dishes and your choice of meat as well.
The gardens and pool were lovely and we had good fun looking at the birds, lizards and the house animals (pony, cow, guinea pigs, dogs, guinea fowl, chickens).
We had a great time on the activities we did, nearby temple complete with big buddha and elephant, whale watching (2 hours drive to the south) where we saw blue whales, train to Hikkiduwa was hot and busy but a good experience nontheless, had a couple of days in the Cinnamon Bey hotel nearby (very good value for pool use and lunch buffet at 3k rupees for adults and free for kids under 6) the highlight for the kids was the turtle sanctuary (around 15 mins in a tuk tuk) where they let us release hatchling sea turtles into the sea at dusk.
The only slight downside (hence the 4 stars and not 5) was the grout in the pool that I know Chris was addressing after we left and he had some free time. It lead to a few cuts on the kids feet and meant we didn't use the pools as much as we would have liked.
A huge thanks to Chris, Shan and Tharindu for an enjoyable 10 days and wouldn't hesitate to recommend to others. It was great also to meet Chris's family who were also visiting at the same time.
Thank you ever so much for taking the time to give us such a super review. We are delighted that you had such a good holiday and enjoyed your stay with us. Your comments are really appreciated and will certainly be passed on to Shan and Tharindu. We have now regrouted the pool as we are committed to addressing any issues that arise at the villa as quickly as possible, to maintain our high standards and ensure our guests have the best possible holiday.
We would love to see you back again at Nisalavila. Many thanks. Chris and the team.

The villa is ideal for bird watching with over fifty different species of bird having been recognised by our visitors. The large natural pond is a particular draw for kingfishers, waders etc.

Nisalavila is an ideal base for local trips and those further afield. Bentota beach 3 miles, Aluthgama two miles, Beruwala two miles.
