Splendid Detached Stone Barn Conversion With Rural Views

Mill Barn is a splendid detached stone barn conversion on the edge of Hebden village. The open plan living area has under floor heating and a wood burning stove set in a Yorkshire Stone fireplace, with french doors leading to the patio, perfect for enjoying the peace and tranquillity or for alfresco dining on warmer days. Mill Barn is complemented with a blend of quality furnishings to a high standard creating a warm and welcoming country retreat. Unfortunately we do not accept pets. Surrounded by spectacular countryside it is a haven for exploring the delights of this stunning and tranquil area of the Dales with a footpath down to the River Wharfe just a few minutes walk away. Hebden has a country inn serving meals, shop, tea rooms and there is a regular bus service to Grassington just 1 ½ miles away where the quaint cobbled square has an array of quality shops, inns and restaurants. Grassington is host to various cultural events throughout the year including the Grassington Festival in late June and the popular annual Dickensian weekends in December. Situated midway between Skipton and Pateley Bridge in an area of unspoilt natural beauty, the pretty villages of Burnsall and Bolton Abbey are just a few minutes drive away. Malham Cove and Tarn, Kilnsey Crag, Parceval Hall Gardens and Stump Cross Caverns are all within easy driving distance.

Peaceful and comfortable
This converted barn is an excellent base for exploring the Yorkshire Dales. It is comfortable, warm and very well equipped. The village of Hebden is a typical Dales village with an excellent pub serving amazing food. We enjoyed joining the locals for the quiz night on Sunday! You do need a car - there is no shop or bus service in the village. The walks to Grassington and Burnsall are easy and picturesque with autumn colours when we were there. Recommended for those seeking a quiet retreat.

Cosy barn in a breathtaking location
The barn is situated in farmland, a stone's throw from the Hebden suspension bridge over the River Wharfe. There are stunning views in all directions and it is fabulously peaceful (apart from normal farm sounds of course!). It's a 15 minute walk uphill to the lovely village of Hebden, and you can stroll along the river to Burnsall (1 mile), or Grassington via the lovely Linton Falls (2 miles). The house itself is well equipped, comfortable and cosy - we had all we needed for a very enjoyable week's stay. The hosts were communicative and helpful, via messaging. (We did see them).

A lovely weekend in the country
Just an amazing chilled weekend, drinks infront of the fire in the evening, walks and lunches at the local pubs and hotels, just magic.

Perfect setting
The setting was perfect and the cottage cosy and warm. Mainly clean and tidy with nice furnishings. Directions given were good and we accessed the property with no problem. We arrived to lovely biscuits and some logs to get us going but only 1 match in the match box. It felt odd that we didn't meet the hosts but perhaps that is the usual process. I know it would be probably more to keep clean but we felt some more local bits and pieces and perhaps old photos of the area on the walls would add to the feel of the place. Couple of issues which we feel should be addressed and we hope taken in good faith: The taps in the bathroom could do with a good clean as there was a lot of black scum around where the taps join the sink which was rather off putting. The shower trap was broken and dirty water inside. The bath had a 20p size chip in it which we feel could be touched up. We found 2 spoons stuck together with some tomato sauce which wasn't nice. The kitchen tap had a slow leak at the bottom. We tried our best to clean before we left but the Henry vacuum just didn't suck well. The dustpan had a bent edge so hard to sweep up effectively. The heating seemed to came on at 3am which was very noisy upstairs and we had a couple of disturbed nights due to this. The only way we could resolve it was to turn the radiators off at night. Shame as it was such a peaceful spot. We opened the patio doors for a short while and then struggled to get them closed.

About the host

Hosted by Helen & Gavin Herd

Host profile image
The Mill Barn is owned and run by the Herd family, with day to day running undertaken by myself and my wife Helen.

I work and live on the family dairy farm situated in Hebden village alongside my parents whilst Helen works full time in Skipton as well as taking care of our two young children.

Why they chose this property

Up until 2009 this outlying barn was used to store hay for feeding the sheep and cattle on the family farm but was increasingly redundant given its distance from the main farmstead. Given its proximity to the River Wharfe and its accessibility to the many footpaths, the decision was taken to diversify and convert the barn into a holiday let. After a very busy 9 months (much of the internal work was undertaken by the family) the barn was ‘up and running’ for Christmas 2009 – just!

What makes this property unique

The Barn is always warm and cosy and its peaceful position means it’s a perfect place to relax. The original beams, large stone fireplace and ‘forking hole’ windows all add character to what is a clean and clutter free property. Every season has its own attractions but Summer is our favourite. The abundance of wildlife on the river (a Kingfisher is regularly spotted), the dairy cows grazing in fields locally (often commented upon by children) and the farmers locally gathering in silage and hay from local meadows.
