About Chris Arney

I am Chris, the owner, I lived in the south of England near the New Forest until I retired early from BT and came to Portugal and bought this house in 2003.

I have lived here for 15 wonderful years. I love Portugal, the people and the weather and I now feel equally at home here as I did in England. One big difference: The cost of living and lots of sunshine and fresh air, Add to that the fabulous and cheap local food, wine and beer, combined with the friendly atmosphere of the local people ... what more could you wish for?

I have 4 children and 8 grandchildren in UK and they are able to come here to enjoy the house and its safe locality in pure fresh air in wonderful sunshine.

We love to go out to local family restaurants for good economical meals where we can eat a good full menu selection for less than 9 euros each, including wine. Excellent value and good healthy food, Well below Spain or Algarve prices.

I live at the house when it is not occupied by guests so it is a living home and well equipped for your needs.

I hope you enjoy the experience as much as I still do.

This is our fourth year renting and we are still learning and improving your experience with the help of constructive feed back from our previous guests. Check out the reviews previous guests have given us to learn more about the house and the local area.

We hope you may be able to add to their advice. We are sure you will enjoy your holiday here, We have tried to make it just right for you. I hope we have succeeded.

I look forward to welcoming you to "Casa dos Sonhos", the house of dreams.

Chris Arney purchased this villa in 2003

Why Chris Arney chose Santa Eufémia

I wanted to find a property in a Rural village location offering a good view and pure fresh air surroundings .

It would be near enough to local towns and amenities served by local bus routes.

The motorway network should be easily accessible for the airports and to the rest of Portugal and beyond.

Most of all it would be a place to enjoy a peaceful time in tranquil surroundings amongst pleasant people, without any of the normal tourism hustle and bustle.

Well… my house has delivered “everything it said on the can ! “

The location also gives immediate access to forest walks from the door. More information at the house.

What makes this villa unique

The house is set in a very peaceful and tranquil area full of traditional people and activities, local bars, chemists, internet cafes, shops, restaurants, banks and farmers markets.

3 Local towns including the beautiful castle town of Penela are within 5 -10 minutes with easy free parking.

30 minutes from the original Capital city of Coimbra set on the river Mondego. The old part of the city is particularly beautiful with traditional shops set in narrow "cobbled " streets interconnecting squares with market stalls restaurants etc.

Food and drink prices in this area are low enough to be a very economical proposition for family nights out and children are always made welcome by the portuguese family groups who regularly visit the local restaurants.

Conimbriga Roman villa and museum is less than 15 mins from the house. Should not be missed by adults and children alike.

Figueira da Foz - Busy seaside resort only 35 mins drive with large spacious beautiful white beaches.

Try the praias fluvial, River beaches maintained for fresh water bathing and enjoyed by children and adults alike. An experience to be tried and enjoyed. Several within the local area. More information at the house.

Shooting the rapids ? Not exactly but worth the experience... Book a trip from Penacova to Coimbra in your own hired canoes down the River Mondego. Information leaflet at the house.

A guide to other local points of Interest is also provided at the house

Guestbook comments from the owner

After a long journey we arrived late at the house where Ana and Chris were waiting to greet us and to show us the facilities the house offered. We were delighted with what we saw. The house provided everything we could wish for, and more. It was a great base for exploring the countryside and coast and returning each evening we made full use of the pool, BBQ and outside amenities. Thank you for a wonderful holiday, from me and the 2 boys.

Relaxing holiday in quiet surroundings with entertainment for young and old alike

  • 5 of 5

We had a family of eight staying at Casa dos Sonhos this summer for a week, ranging from grandparents to a five year old and a two and a half year old toddler. We were hoping to find a property that could cater for such a diverse range of ages and we were pleasantly surprised that Casa dos Sonhos ticked all the boxes. Both young and old fully enjoyed the gardens, swimming pool, games room, and barbecue area. The inside of the property was immaculately clean and modern, and had more than enough space for us all. It was great to be able to go out to the beach or exploring during the day (on the occasions when we managed to drag ourselves away from the property) knowing what a wonderful place we were coming back to in the evening, and no day would be complete without the mandatory swim in the pool (duly enforced by the children, even if we had just come from the beach), even if the sun had already gone down. We loved that we could enjoy some peace and quiet away from it all, whilst still having so much entertainment at hand, and the games room was another firm favourite. Thank you very much Chris and Ana for allowing us the opportunity to stay at your lovely property, and I am sure we will be looking to come back again in the future.

Owner's Response: Hello to all the family and many thanks for taking the time to provide such a wonderful review. You probably dont realise that it gives us so much pleasure to know that once again we have enabled a full family to enjoy a holiday to remember using the house as the heart of it. It makes all the things we do worth while and the spirit to continue and to strive to improve for more excellence, year on year. We hope you do consider us again in the future and we look forward to welcoming such a wonderful family back to the house and you can be sure that something will have been added or improved by the time you do. Very best regards to you all. Chris and Ana.

A quiet relaxing property with superb facilities

  • 5 of 5

As a family of five (kids: 18,13 and 12) we were initially struck by the well planned layout - providing plenty of space inside and an outdoor area and pool to enjoy. The property was very well maintained. The ideally sized pool was great for us all with plenty of loungers, eating area and swinging seats too. The huge barbecue was used regularly. The poolroom was amazing - complete with fridge and stereo (the kids got to experience proper LPs!). All of this really just describes the facilities though. Chris the owner ensured we had everything we needed, from knowledge of the locality to possible days out. The weather was consistently excellent and there was a variety of places to visit and to eat out at. The area is unspoilt and yet there were opportunities to try kayaking, outdoor pursuits and swimming within a short drive. The local cafe in nearby villages and towns were great. Sitting out by the well lit pool looking out at the lights in the distance with a cold glass of something was the perfect way to end each day. The greatest complement I can give to Chris and his home is that within a fortnight of returning home we were booked for the following summer.

As two busy parents, this was an ideal place to relax and spend time as a family.

Lovely week

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a wonderful week at casa dos sonhos, the house was fabulous with everything you could possibly need to enjoy your holiday, having our own private pool was just great and the games room with pool table was an even bigger bonus. One of our favourites was the fountain in the garden, we spent many hours just lazing on sun beds around the pool and ended the day sipping wine on the balcony.

Chris was the host with the most, we arrived very late but he was ther waiting to greet us with a fabulous assortment of food and drinks he even returned early next morning with fresh bread and ham for us, he really went out of his way to help us all in all we had a truly great time and can't wait to return.

Thank you Chris for a really great time at casa dos Sonhos
