I am Chris, the owner, I lived in the south of England near the New Forest until I retired early from BT and came to Portugal and bought this house in 2003.
I have lived here for 13 wonderful years. I love Portugal, the people and the weather and I now feel equally at home here as I did in England. One big difference: The cost of living and lots of sunshine and fresh air, Add to that the fabulous and cheap local food, wine and beer, combined with the friendly atmosphere of the local people ... what more could you wish for?
I have 4 children and 6 grandchildren in UK and they are able to come here to enjoy the house and its safe locality in pure fresh air in wonderful sunshine.
We love to go out to local family restaurants for good economical meals where we can eat a good full menu selection for less than 10 Euro each, including wine. Excellent value and good healthy food, Not Spain or Algarve prices.
I live at the house when it is not occupied by guests so it is a living home and well equipped for your needs.I hope you enjoy the experience as much as I still do..
This is our second year renting and we are still learning and improving your experience with the help of constructive feed back from our previous guests. We hope you may be able to add to their advice. We are sure you will enjoy your holiday here, We have tried to make it just right for you. I hope we have succeeded.
I look forward to welcoming you to "Casa dos Sonhos", the house of dreams.
Chris Arney purchased this bungalow in 2003
I wanted to find a property in Rural village location offering a good view and pure fresh air surroundings .
It would be near enough to local towns and amenities served by local bus routes.
The motorway network should be easily accessible for the airports and to the rest of Portugal and beyond.
Most of all it would be a place to enjoy a peaceful time in tranquil surroundings amongst pleasant people, without any of the normal tourism hustle and bustle.
Well… my house has delivered “everything it said on the can ! “
The location also gives immediate access to forest walks from the door.
The house is set in a very peaceful and tranquil area full of traditional people and activities, local bars, chemists, internet cafes, shops, restaurants, banks and farmers markets.
3 Local towns including the beautiful castle town of Penela are within 5-10 minutes with easy free parking.
30 minutes from the original Capital city of Coimbra set on the river Mondego. The old part of the city is particularly beautiful with traditional shops set in narrow "cobbled " streets interconnecting squares with market stalls restaurants etc.
Food and drink prices in this area are low enough to be a very economical proposition for family nights out and children are always made welcome by the portuguese family groups who regularly visit the local restaurants.
Conimbriga Roman villa and museum is less than 15 mins from the house. Should not be missed by adults and children alike.
Figueira da Foz - Busy seaside resort only 35 mins drive with large spacious beautiful white beaches.
A guide to local points of Interest is provided at the house
Where do I start, to share the good feelings we had at this house …
Good facilities in the house and everything catered for – well equipped kitchen, wifi, Sky TV, … Loved the games room!! Lots of seating inside and especially outside, including good shading – the umbrellas were excellent and the outside dining area adjacent the ever beckoning pool was great .
Loved the padded cushions on the recliners – have been elsewhere with just plastic recliners with no cushioning and wasn’t comfortable. Welcome pack – wine and a few essentials very welcome especially for late arrivals.
Detailed instructions on how to get there from the airport was very useful. Nice to have a washing line & pegs available. Often don’t get that. Unbreakable plates & glasses for safer outdoor use. Huge help having your mobile number available – many thanks for your help when we texted.
A few negatives (as requested) - No bin in the kitchen. No Visitors book for guests to write good (and bad) ,places to visit etc. Fans in the bedrooms – was rather warm some nights.
All in all we thoroughly enjoyed staying at your house, it was very much home-from-home (but with a pool and sunshine), extremely relaxing and we’ll thoroughly recommend it.
We had a fab time and the house was really excellent suffice to say that we’re thinking of staying again next summer – if you’re renting it out again?
As a family of five (kids: 18,13 and 12) we were initially struck by the well planned layout - providing plenty of space inside and an outdoor area and pool to enjoy. The property was very well maintained. The ideally sized pool was great for us all with plenty of loungers, eating area and swinging seats too. The huge barbecue was used regularly. The poolroom was amazing - complete with fridge and stereo (the kids got to experience proper LPs!). All of this really just describes the facilities though. Chris the owner ensured we had everything we needed, from knowledge of the locality to possible days out. The weather was consistently excellent and there was a variety of places to visit and to eat out at. The area is unspoilt and yet there were opportunities to try kayaking, outdoor pursuits and swimming within a short drive. The local cafe in nearby villages and towns were great. Sitting out by the well lit pool looking out at the lights in the distance with a cold glass of something was the perfect way to end each day. The greatest complement I can give to Chris and his home is that within a fortnight of returning home we were booked for the following summer.
As two busy parents, this was an ideal place to relax and spend time as a family.
This was the perfect getaway for a rural peaceful holiday. The villa had everything you need and the barbecue is great for relaxing evenings in. The pool is fantastic as well as the games room for evening entertainment. We had a really relaxing time and would recommend this holiday if you wish to escape from the chaos of every day life!
Chris was really lovely, welcoming and helpful. The house has everything you could possibly need for a holiday .. And there was even some supplies in the fridge! Swim, play pool, read on the swing chairs and BBQ to your hearts content, perfect!
We had a lovely week here. We all really enjoyed the pool, the outside space and the downstairs pool room - brilliant fun! Definitely recommend.
We have just returned from a wonderful week at casa dos sonhos, the house was fabulous with everything you could possibly need to enjoy your holiday, having our own private pool was just great and the games room with pool table was an even bigger bonus. One of our favourites was the fountain in the garden, we spent many hours just lazing on sun beds around the pool and ended the day sipping wine on the balcony.
Chris was the host with the most, we arrived very late but he was ther waiting to greet us with a fabulous assortment of food and drinks he even returned early next morning with fresh bread and ham for us, he really went out of his way to help us all in all we had a truly great time and can't wait to return.
Thank you Chris for a really great time at casa dos Sonhos
For us, the best feature of Casa das Sonhas was the garden and pool area – it was perfect. As a group of 6 (3 mature couples), we spent most of our time in this space, relaxing, swimming, barbecuing, eating, enjoying the wonderful view and sometimes after dinner, playing pool and listening to music in the adjacent snooker/pool room. The shady swing-seat was my personal favourite!
The kitchen was well-equipped, allowing us to cater easily for ourselves and Chris, the owner, even left us some bread, meat, cheese and wine to welcome us, which was very considerate.
The beds were comfortable and we were pleased to discover that each of the windows had mosquito blinds, so the little blighters were on a hiding to nothing hah!
The house is in a sleepy little village – perfect for chilling out, but with towns, shopping and places of interest close by.
Thank you. We had a very enjoyable week.
Special interest holidays:
There are varioius " Praia Fluvials" in the area which are river beaches where you can enjoy the invigourating, fresh waters from the hills - an experience not to be missed on hot days.
