Overview

About the property

3 bedroom character cottage in unspoilt village, beautiful garden, opposite Crown Inn country pub

This character cottage is located in the centre of the picturesque village of Shorwell, with easy access to downland walks and approximately 2 miles from the sea.

As the name suggests, Brookside Cottage has a delightful little brook running alongside the beautiful lawned garden. Whilst modernized, the property dates back to 1700. On the ground floor there is a large sitting room. The fully fitted kitchen comes complete with range cooker, washing machine, tumble dryer and microwave. Upstairs, there are three bedrooms (one en-suite) and a bathroom. The cottage is furnished to a high standard and with double-glazing and a LPG boiler central heating system, is ideal for holidays and short breaks all year round.

Guests staying 7 nights or more are welcomed with a hamper from Brighstone Village Shop containing local island produce, local newspaper and in the winter, wood and smokeless fuel for the wood burner. A typical hamper will include Isle of Wight milk, bread, lemonade, jam, cake, eggs, tomato ketchup, biscuits, and butter (items can be swapped on request). Fair trade tea, coffee and sugar is available in the cottage. Please ask for our discounted vehicle & foot passenger ferry deals when you book.

Shorwell nestles in a wooded valley, encircled by hills. The village has three manor houses and many thatched and stone built picturesque cottages. Shorwell has a great pub, The Crown Inn, which dates back to the 16th century. The pub has a lovely trout filled brook running through its garden (the same one as Brookside Cottage, which is directly opposite). The oldest part of the village is known as Westview and is close to the church of St Peter. The church itself dates back to the 12th century. The village also boasts a post office, re fronted in Georgian style.

About Teresa Tearle

My love affair with the Isle of Wight began in 2001 following in the footsteps of my boyfriend who spent happy times on the island learning to paraglide and looking for fossils. His love of the island was infectious and more visits followed together. We bought our first cottage (2 The Granary, Brighstone) in 2004 and our holiday letting adventure began! We bought our second cottage (Brookside Cottage) in 2008 and thoroughly enjoy being able to share our cottages and the island with our holiday guests.

Teresa Tearle purchased this cottage in 2008

Why Teresa Tearle chose Shorwell

We fell in love with Shorwell village and got married in here in 2009 - you can see the church where we got married from the cottage window!

What makes this cottage unique

We now spend as much time on the island as we can, taking our dinghy out fishing or walking the landscape. We love stepping off the ferry to such peace and are working hard to refurbish a delightful bungalow that will soon be our island home! We have worked hard to embed sustainability in our business - Brookside Cottage achieving Highly Commended in the Beautiful South Awards 2012.

Guestbook comments from the manager

I have just returned from our stay at your cottage at Shorwell. I must say I was very impressed with the lovely cosy cottage. It was nice and warm, and we did need the heating last week, with plenty of hot water and very well appointed. Probably the nicest holiday cottage I've rented. Beautiful little garden, which unfortunately we couldn't take full advantage of because of the mixed weather. The cottage was very clean and tidy and everything one could need had been thought of. The welcome hamper was a lovely touch and much appreciated.

You will certainly be my first choice when visiting the Island again and I will spread the word. Thank you again for providing comfortable accommodation.

Character Isle of Wight holiday cottage - garden, great for families, near pub

Wonderful clean cottage, perfect for our family of 6.

  • 5 of 5

The owner has thought of everything- we were very impressed with how clean and tidy the cottage was; very sweet in every way with lovely soft towels and comfortable beds. The children loved the garden with its little stream running along the side which they ‘fished’ in everyday looking for creatures and interesting stones! We also had a friendly pheasant visit us every morning looking for his breakfast- children were delighted as he came up to the door to see them. Even our teenager was impressed! We had a couple of lovely meals in the pub directly opposite the house which was great as it took the stress out of looking for somewhere (on our first night they plated up all of dinners so the children who were tired from travelling could eat their tea after getting into their pjs!) All in all the cottage was a brilliant base, we have 4 children so usually go for a bigger property but this was absolutely fine, the children shared rooms which was fine for the week. The charm of the cottage added to the holiday experience- and the hamper we were were left by the owner was the best one we have ever been given, we will most definitely be coming back!

Owner's Response: Wonderful review! Delighted that our cosy cottage, characterful local pub and welcome hamper of Island produce is so appreciated. The beautiful brook which borders the garden was one of the reasons we bought this cottage - and always goes down well with young children as it is really shallow and great for paddling. "Red" the pheasant is still visiting and welcoming guests - seed is kept in the cupboard in the utility room!

a beautiful little home from home

This is the second year I've rented Brookside Cottage, it comes equipped with absolutely everything, plus more. It's in a lovely little village with a fantastic pub across the road and only a few minutes drive away from the south coast beaches.

Fantastic cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had an lovely time staying at this beautiful and very well equipped cottage, it was extremely clean with everything you could ever need. The wood burner was great and lovely on the snowy days that we had however the cottage is very warm without it. We had a very minor problem with one of the taps which was fixed in person by the owners within the hour, fantastic service! We would most definitely recommend this cottage to everyone!

Absolutely beautiful

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Brookside cottage for 5 nights. On arrival we were pleasantly surprised by how lovely the cottage looked. It was super clean and warm and so welcoming. Even better than it looked in the pictures. The cottage is very spacious and the kitchen is well equipped with everything you’ll need in a holiday home.

Teresa was so very helpful when we needed her help in the middle of the night .

Shorwell is a quiet lovely place exactly as we had hoped for. If we ever returned to the Isle of Wight we would definitely love to stay in Brookside cottage again !

Wonderful cottage in a superb location

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is very well equipped with everything you could ever need. It was extremely clean and the welcome hamper was a lovely touch with lots of yummy Island goodies.

It is in a great location for exploring the Island and has the added benefit of being opposite a pub which serves delicious meals and has very friendly staff.

We would definitely recommend the cottage for couples or families.

Beautiful, well-equipped character cottage.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a Christmas break with our 2 daughters; one travelling from Southampton, the other travelling from Oxford and ourselves coming up from Cornwall. Teresa laid on those extra touches such as 2 Christmas trees and Christmas decorations to make it a wonderful Christmas exceeding all our expectations. We are so thankful to her for the wonderful spirit and energy she has put into her venture and we can only say that we wholeheartedly appreciate it and applaud her.
