Overview

About the property

House, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

(Please read Note at the end of this description.)

Located 75 min. north of Santa Fe, Abiquiu Lake Casita is far from highways and noise, but for the sounds of birds and wind.

Our casita (small house) is set on 13.5 acres on top of one of the highest mesas overlooking Abiquiu Lake, with unlimited 360 degree views north toward the lake and Ghost Ranch and south towards the Jemez Mountains and Cerro Pedernal, the 10,000 foot flat-topped mountain that Georgia O'Keeffe loved to paint, making the mountain into an icon of northern New Mexico. Historically, Pedernal is a sacred site for Native Americans and local inhabitants.

You can soak your body in a luxurious HOT TUB after a day of hiking, reading, painting, or writing. Our casita was designed in the traditional adobe style, including a Kiva wood- burning fireplace (wood provided), pine hand-hewn vigas that help support the ceiling; tile floors with radiant heating; and thick walls to hold the warmth in winter and keep you cool in summer, walls hand-plastered in the adobe style; and Mexican antique furniture.

We added modern comfort throughout, including a modern and well-stocked kitchen, local art and track lighting on dimmers, and a spacious great room with a Mexican dining table that can be expanded with 3 leaves for art or writing projects.

To take advantage of the long and wide views across the valleys, we built two 'portales' (covered porches). You can dine on the north side while gazing down the valley and across the lake towards the red cliffs of Ghost Ranch, or you can bask in the warmth of the sun--even in winter--on the southern portale, as you look towards the Jemez Mountains and Pedernal. Both portales are furnished with a comfortable outdoor dining set. There's also a recliner and a propane BBQ.

Since there are no city lights to compete, billions of stars fill the night sky, part of the magic of New Mexico. Our favorite time for the hot tub is at night, gazing at the Milky Way and galaxies, frequently punctuated by numerous shooting stars; when it's not dark, moonlight bathes the rolling hills and desert floor.

A Gentle warning: The views, the far off patterns of changing weather, and the warm coziness of the casita may make it difficult to leave the casita at all.

Abiquiu Lake Casita was featured in New Mexico Magazine, November, 2011.

PS: RESTRICTIONS: RV's, Trailers of any sort, large Trucks (over 3/4 ton), and small vehicles of any sort, (motorcycles, all terrain vehicles and such--are prohibited by neighborhood rules.

About Glynn

We are former college English teachers who love the southwest. We live in Tesuque, just north of Santa Fe.

Glynn purchased this house in 2000

Why Glynn chose Youngsville

Having been in love with the southwest for a long time, we found this site in 2000 and it was more beautiful than any of the places we had seen--or have seen since-- during our travels throughout this extraordinary part of the country.

What makes this house unique

Peace, quiet, relaxation, endless views and walks, time to read and be creative. After that, explore the villages, cultures and wilderness in and beyond Abiquiu.

A perfect and exquisitely relaxing getaway

  • 5 of 5

Scott and Glynn have shared with us the sweetest and most relaxing Casita of our dreams. Everything you could possibly want or need is here. We are already planning our next trip back! My suggestion is to bring lots of food so that you don't even have to leave to go into town! Serene yet pampering. In a word..perfect!

Owner's Response: We love that we know most of our guests by now because they return so often. We believe our area is so special that it should be shared by as many as possible.

High Desert Retreat

  • 5 of 5

The house sits under the spell of the Pedernal Mountain, a spiritual mountain in the area. My family loved the wildlife we witnessed including prairie dogs , jack rabbits, and coyotes. One sunrise there was the sound of an Indian flute and chants drifting up from the lake area. The house is very comfortable and sunrise and sunset simply breathtaking every single day. As a student at the Ghost Ranch it was a wonderful retreat from the sparse ranch accommodations, but it is a 30 minute trip back and forth. The kitchen really is well stocked in cooking supplies for a rental house. For a rural setting the internet and television connections excellent. Loved the daily visit from the neighbor's poodles.

Easy to visit Taos and Santa Fe for day trips.

A beautifully appointed casita in an idyllic setting

  • 5 of 5

We feel lucky to have had the opportunity to stay in the little house and our experience of it represents the fulfillment of a dream. The decor and furnishings were in the traditional New Mexican style and we found it all clean,

comfortable and well equipped. There was some wild life to entertain us, birds, humming birds, rabbits, and the neighbor's dog checked on us periodically. A remarkably fine situation, looking over Abiquiu Lake towards Ghost Ranch on the one side and Cerro Pedernal (Georgia O'Keefe's mountain) and Polvadera Peak on the other. The views could not be bettered. For what we had the cost of the rental was reasonable. Our only regret is that a three days stay wasn't long enough. This was likely a once in a lifetime experience but we do hope to be able to return.

Magical casita

  • 5 of 5

Arriving at Glynn and Scott’s casita is like landing in another dimension. The Mesa feels like the top of the world. The high desert scenery is almost too beautiful to believe. From the back porch, you see the beautiful lake up against the red cliffs. From the front porch, there is Cerro Pedernale, the sacred mountain. Add to this the wonderful smell of the high desert breeze along with the soothing quiet and it’s just magical!

Other notables- the hot tub under the stars, a very comfy bed, a nicely stocked kitchen, amazing mountain thunderstorms. I can’t think of anything we didn’t enjoy...except leaving.

If you’re looking for a gorgeous place to relax, rest and reconnect, and if you crave solitude, you will love this rental. We have been here 3 times and can’t wait to return!

Owner's Response: We enjoy so many returning guests that I think our casita is really a coop! In our minds, the casita belongs to our guests and we are the caretakers, and it gives us a lot of joy to share this magical place. In 2000, when we first walked to the top of the mesa and saw the 360 views, I began to cry and said to Scott, "No one should own this." In a way, since we share it with so many, we've made that be true, and that makes us happy.

Peaceful, Tranquil, Restful

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the Abiquiu Lake Casita during our recent trip to visit our daughter & son-in-law who live in Coyote NM. When we weren't touring the area, we spent long hours on the patio overlooking the lake and cliffs, enjoying meals and wine, and watching the hummingbirds at the feeder on the patio. Also enjoyable were the periodic visits by Dakota, the standard poodle that lives down the road. It's such a nice site to see him galloping from afar...such a sweet dog! One evening we were fortunate to experience a wonderful rainstorm with lots of lightening and thunder. Otherwise, with clear skies, my wife and I would sit out on the patio and gaze at the Milky Way and the billions of stars...God's creation is amazing! We highly recommend the Abiquiu Lake Casita if you want a peaceful, tranquil and restful experience. And Glynn & Scott could not have been more accommodating! We will be back!!

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I look forward to your return, but we book fully, as you can see, so don't wait until the last minute--or you won't be able to find open dates just as we, the owners, can't! Our renters become our friends, as I hope you will too. This is a spiritual site, both experientially and historically. The 360 degree views cannot be caught with our camera. Glynn and Scott
