About Rick Storlie

Hello! My name is Rick Storlie. I have a 9 year old son Mason and 11 year old daughter Breanna. I live in Savage, MN and I'm originally from Northfield. I'm also an alumni of St. Cloud State University.

Why Rick Storlie chose Walker

I looked all over northern MN and western Wisconsin before deciding on Walker MN and Leech Lake. Hayward WI and Brainerd, MN were just too commercial for me. I love the small town charm of Walker and the boating/fishing opportunities on Leech Lake. The area has tons of attractions with golf, great restaurants, shopping, hunting, biking and hiking to name just a few.

I love to hunt and the Chippewa National Forest has some great grouse and deer hunting. In the summer running/biking is awesome and I'll spend a lot of time on the Paul Bunyon bike trails. Having dinner at Chase on the Lake in downtown Walker is a treat too.

The best part is you feel like your up north but the drive is manageable from the twin cities.

What makes this house unique

Probably the best part about my home is the beach. The kids will play out there all day swimming, fishing and making sand castles. It's one of the best swimming beaches for kids we've ever seen with a pure sand bottom, gradual slope to the lake and shallow depths.

I love to eat out on the deck and watch the kids play. The deck faces east so you don't get cooked by the sun in the afternoon. The walk to the beach is nearly flat and there's a great spot for campfires (I supply the wood). You can find chairs for sitting next to the fire under the deck.

One of the overlooked aspects of my home is the privacy. The road is private and a dead end with about 12 cabins. There is an environmental lake across the street so no homes are built there. I only have a neighbor to the north and south.

I've pretty much remodeled the entire home since 2008. There isn't much that wasn't replaced. I'd describe the home as a 'raised ranch.' The basement has about 6' of headroom with a 3/4 bath, scrapbooking/crafting room and laundry facilities. There's plenty of room to store your gear too.

Upstairs you have a split bedroom configuration. One side of the home has 2 bedrooms separated by a full bath. The other side is the owner's suite. Living areas are in the middle. Make sure you check out our video tours in the links section.

We had a great time! The house is fantastic, and very well kept and appointed. We found that the best fishing was about 100 yards straight out from the house in 14 ft. of water. We ventured to other spots and locations, but right out front was best. I will recommend your place to friends that are looking for a very nice lake get away. Only suggestion would be the 2 twin mattress's are getting kind of "contoured" Thanks again for such nice accommodations.

Great house !

The house was great ! I could honestly live there with no issues. The garage was great as well, I pulled my truck and boat trailer in the garage when the boat was on the lift. Everything felt super safe with your vehicles locked in the garage while your out on the lake . 1st time on leech lake and it's a huge lake with some big waves when the wind blows !!! Thanks Rick

Not as advertised

We rented Rick’s place for the sole purpose of fishing and selected the property because it was advertised as having a boat lift and a dock. Unfortunately, we arrived to find that neither the dock or boat lift were in. In fact, neither were in until our last night after numerous phone calls and conversations. Not exactly what I had in mind on my vacation.

The first night, we were told to use the neighbor’s dock. On the second night, we had to beach my boat on shore. After all of this, Rick only offered to refund us $25 dollars with the rationale that $25 would have been the cost for one night of dock fees at the resort down the road. He refused to acknowledge the fact that the house was advertised as having a dock and boat lift and we only had access to both for the final night and wouldn’t have rented in the first place without them. The fact that we rented his place because he advertised a dock and boat lift was completely disregarded. To make matters worse, he said we “decided” not to use the neighbor’s boat lift on day two. The reality was that we tried to use it but my boat was too big for the lift. I have been fishing with the same group for 15 years and have never encountered anything quite like this. To say I’m disappointed with Rick’s offer of $25 to make things right is an understatement.

Owner's Response: And here's the rest of the story....The ice officially left Leech Lake May 9th- the latest in the last 15 years. I confirmed with my dock service my lift and dock would be installed the week of May 18th and subsequently confirmed it would be installed on Thursday May 24th. I called to confirm installation on May 24th and my dock service said they didn't get to my cabin yet but would be there tomorrow May 25th. To make sure the lift was installed properly I drove to the cabin on Friday the 25th, a 420 mile trip. At 4 pm on the 25th Brandon arrived and my dock service was nowhere to be found. I tried calling but no answer and messages were not returned. I got permission from my neighbor so Brandon could use their dock and lift Friday night. Saturday morning I continued to call my dock service to no avail. I then called 4 other dock services and only one answered. I found out the owner of my dock service had sold his company over the winter and the new owner had no experience and took on too much work. I was also told everyone is behind due to late ice and nobody had enough crews to keep up with their own customers. In other words, no luck. Saturday night I confirmed a neighbor could help me put my dock and lift in. He also offered his lift and dock to Brandon and was willing to widen his lift to fit Brandon's boat. Brandon declined the offer. Sunday I drove another 420 miles and put my lift and dock in with my neighbors help. At this point, Brandon had been without a dock and lift for 24 hours, at his choosing. On the drive home Brandon requested a $250 refund for the inconvenience, 30% of his rental fee. I told him I'm sorry this happened and would give him the option of a free night during a future stay ($130 value) or I would comp him for not having a lift/slip on Saturday. He chose the slip compensation. A slip rents for $25/night at the adjacent resort. As an owner, I don't know what more I could have done in this situation. I spent 16+ hours and drove 840 miles in a 48 hour period to rectify the situation. It's important for any guest of a private home to remember we are not resorts or hotels and don't have on site staff. Things can break or go wrong. We'll do our best to get things fixed but we are limited. I've been renting my place since 2005 and have over 100 five star reviews here. I'll let you, the reader, determine if I could have done more. Thx for reading and considering my place ~Rick

Nice home- great location and lake view

We stayed here during the winter to enjoy a weekend ice fishing trip Leech Lake. There were a couple hiccups during our stay which made me rate it a 4 Star instead of 5. The first thing was, the new thermostat was not set up and ready for use when we arrived. After working with Rick we finally figured out the issue and was able to heat the home nicely. The 2nd thing was that the hot water heater was not working when we arrived. After working with Rick again, we were able to get it working so that we could enjoy a nice hot shower. Other than that the home was very nice and cozy.

We had a great time on Leech Lake. The whole family enjoyed our days on the lake ice fishing and warming up by the fire at night. You feel right at home when you walk through the door! We will definitely be back!

Note: I keep my rates lower for groups of 5 or less by opening/closing bedrooms & baths. You'll always have access to all the living areas.

-If your group is:

-3 or less you'll have 1 bedroom/bath open (owner's suite) and the sofa sleeper.
-4-6 you'll have 2 bedrooms/baths open (owner's suite and 2nd main floor bath. Chose between the bedroom with
two twin beds or lakeside bedroom with the queen) and the sofa sleeper.
-6 - 8 automatically have all 3 bedrooms/baths open and the sofa sleeper.
-Summer weeks always have all beds/baths open regardless of group size

If you'd like to open up an extra bed/bath that is not automatically included with your group size, you can pay a one-time cleaning fee of $30 + tax for each bed/bath combination. This is a one-time fee and not a nightly fee.
