About this property

Lovely Traditional Highland Cottage

Situated in the small fishing village of Hilton of Cadboll it offers a pleasant retreat within a stunning landscape. The village is one of three coastal villages which include Balintore and Shandwick and are collectively known as the Seaboard villages.
Mara Cottage is situated on the eastern shore of the beautiful Moray Firth and enjoys one of the most temperate climates in Scotland. The cottage enjoys spectacular views across the firth with regular sightings of the Moray Firth dolphins from the cottage as they often like to swim close to the shore.
The surrounding area has beautiful coastal walks and interesting geological features such as an ancient raised beach which can be accessed at the end of the village. The Moray Coast also offers a variety of pictish stones situated in both Hilton of Cadboll and Shandwick bay.
The nearby village of Portmahomack has an award winning Pictish Visitor Centre. Shandwick offers an award winning Blue Flag beach which is perfect for a family picnic.
There is a good restaurant, village inn, harbour, post office and local shops all within 10 minutes walk of the cottage.
Mara Cottage is a welcoming, charming cottage in a location which offers the best of both worlds - relaxation and chill out time with a selection of books and games or a base to explore the northern highlands. There is an enclosed garden to both the front and back of Mara Cottage which is suitable for children.
The historic burghs of Tain and Dornoch are within easy reach of Mara Cottage - both are charming and offer a variety of historic sights which are well worth a visit. The Highland Capital of Inverness is a thirty minute car journey or alternately catch the train from Fearn Station which is 10 minutes from Mara Cottage.

Make the best of it
The cottage is lovely really nice spacious and reasonably modernised. Location is a little remote next to balintore though you make the best of everything. One major recommendation would be for a microwave in kitchen. We found the master bed uncomfortable though understand that’s more difficult to cater to. It’s next to the sea and the views are nice. It is a good base of travel and there are nearby shop, post office, community centre, play park and inn/pub. All in all you make the best of it!

Easter Ross holiday
Lovely cottage, well appointed, scrupulously clean. V good comms with owners. Only slight downside is difficulty finding parking on narrow street - would be worth sacrificing a bit of the front garden to create a proper parking place.

Home away from home
Beautiful property, well maintained and spotless. A well stocked kitchen with everything you need. A 15 minute walk from a beautiful beach. The neighbours are friendly. The village is well situated for sightseeing. I would highly recommend

About the host

Host profile image
We bought Mara Cottage as a family home and lived there for 17 years. After moving South we could not part with the cottage and decided use it as a holiday home for both ourselves and others to enjoy.
We love the peaceful tranquillity and the beauty of the area.

Why they chose this property

It always feels like a place to relax, enjoy the wonderful scenery of Scotland and connect with the Highland culture. As the cottage is on the coast, you become more aware of the changing landscape and the way the sea reflects the weather. The Moray Firth is a wee hidden gem in the Highlands.

What makes this property unique

We feel so privileged to be able to see dolphins from the window and all of the coastal wildlife. Not to forget the links golf courses followed by the excellent malt whisky from local distilleries including, Dalmore, Glenmorangie and Balblair!
