Salakos is built on 400 meters altitude at the foot of mountain Profitis Ilias (Prophet Elias). The village also has its own smaller valley of butterflies( called Nymph by the locals) where you can enjoy a walk, admire the butterflies and the Greek nature, rest next to the clear streams of water, which by the way is drinkable, and if you are lucky you will be able to spot the small fish Gizani. The Gizani is an endangered species protected by both the Greek and European legislation. If you also want to visit the famous Butterflies Valley Park( in Greek Petaloudes), you can be there in half an hour by car, as it is located near the village.
At the village’s square there is a mini market with a wide range of products covering your everyday needs. There are traditional Greek taverns where you can enjoy home-cooked style Greek foods and after your meal you can enjoy a relaxed afternoon with the locals at one of the village’s two traditional coffee shops or Kafenia, as you will hear them call them. There you can try the authentic Greek coffee or drink ouzo and try a meze and enjoy your afternoon as a true Greek.
