17th Century farmhouse, full of character & original features, with private pool

Property type farmhouse
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

5 Bedrooms, sleeps 10/12, private pool, not overlooked, peaceful

Set down a winding alley in a tiny hamlet in the most peaceful part of the island, Ghammar Farmhouse is the perfect place to unwind. With uninterrupted views over the valley to the sea the setting is idyllic. With a huge vaulted sitting room opening onto a downstairs terrace, large well equipped kitchen, spacious dining room (seats 10-12) leading to poolside terrace, delightful inner courtyard and large upstairs terrace, there is space for everyone to relax without feeling on-top of each other. This makes it ideal for families, extended family get-togethers or groups of adults.

As our own holiday home it is well equipped with a full-size ping pong table, games and books, CD player, i-pod dock plus flippers and other beach equipment available for guests to use. Fast fibre-optic wifi is included, as is a wonderful daily maid service - everyone wants to take Doris home with them at the end of their stay!

With original paintings on the walls and all the personal touches of a much loved home, the farmhouse is rather different from the usual holiday rental experience. In particular, the kitchen has everything you need to cook proper family meals and enjoy all the delicious local ingredients, without the frustration of finding there's only one sharp knife, no large pans or a tiny fridge! With enough matching crockery to throw a party, enough mugs for a days worth of tea drinking (which is a lot in our family) and the largest fridge we could fit in, I hope it will exceed your expectations.

If you like your holiday homes brand new, modern and pristine, this may not be the place for you - it is an old farmhouse, with an ancient stone staircase worn uneven by centuries of use, and masses of rustic charm. So the teapot may be a bit battered (makes 6 great mugs of tea though), but the joy of the space is untarnished.

It was originally converted in the '70s by some old family friends, and we've done more since buying it in 2000 (put in the pool, added en-suites, redone the bits that were looking particularly tired and other little annual improvements), but it was not converted to be a rental property. This means there's a balance between the imperfect (no power showers or modern furniture) and the personal (everything we like to make a holiday special). We think this balance works perfectly for people who appreciate character, atmosphere and a really personal experience, rather than modern and mass produced. And if anything isn't working or you have any problems to do with the house, please let Doris know and she will do what she can to take care of it.

About Polly Rubinstein

Having grown up in North London, I now live in a more rural life in Rutland, England's smallest county (although I do miss the energy and culture of London, so perhaps one day...) I adore places with character, appreciating natural materials and the patina of time with all its imperfections and idiosyncrasies, so I avoid purpose built tourist traps and can think of nothing worse than spending a holiday in an apartment block, with satellite TV and all mod cons!

Polly Rubinstein purchased this farmhouse in 2000

Why Polly Rubinstein chose Ta' Għammar

I've been going to Gozo since I was four when my parents bought and renovated a farmhouse in Xaghra, finally selling it 20 years later. For many years I had a combination of happy memories of childhood holidays, combined with a sense of longing and a desire to create a similarly wonderful experience for my own family. So when the time came to consider buying a holiday home I was delighted to rediscover Gozo and find that it had changed little in the intervening years and was still wonderfully unspoilt. The remarkable thing about such a small island is that we keep discovering new places - hidden swimming spots, deserted coastal walks and beautiful backstreets to explore.

What makes this farmhouse unique

I've said that the house is in a tiny hamlet in the quietest part of the island, which means most times of day and night it is gloriously silent apart from birdsong and the hum of insects. However, as you will get anywhere in Gozo, there are some disturbances which I'd like to pre-warn you about... Firstly, every village has a 'festa' during the spring and summer months - bands, processions, church bell ringing, firework displays, street stalls, street parties, extravagantly lit and decorated churches, intricate street decorations, confetti throwing, carrying of life-size religious statues and authentic qubbajt (traditional nougats). These are great to visit, but they start with lots of loud 'bangers' (blank fireworks) on the run up to the feast day, to scare away the devil. These resonate across the valleys, so the local festas of Gharb and Ghasri, and possibly one or two more distant ones might disturb your peace for a day or two if your stay coincides with them.

We used to be woken by gunfire (bird shooting) early on Spring mornings - a local sport which thankfully was outlawed a few years ago, but some people break the ban, so the odd gunshot in the spring is possible.

Occasionally building noise can be heard in the mornings, depending on any work going on locally (they are great builders, but tend to start buildings and never quite get around to finishing them!). I will warn guests of anything I know of very nearby which might disturb them.

Otherwise, it's just birds, cicadas and the gentle hum of nature.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The most wonderful holiday we have ever had. The weather was lovely, the beaches quiet and the island a rich combination of untouched, beautiful and interesting. The rocky landscape is littered with the most breath-taking churches. In Ta Pinu Sanctuary a lovely old priest reached into his pocket and handed each of the girls a 'gold' medallion - they were thrilled. That characterises the islanders - very warm and friendly and speak amazingly good English. The farmhouse is full of character and has a hundred hiding places for the children. It is not over-looked and very private. It has everything you could need for a truly relaxing holiday, including no TV (the children have never played more beautifully together). Doris the maid is sent from heaven. The standards she keeps in the farmhouse are what you would want for your own home - and she baby-sits! Lots of very nice restaurants to try, in particular a fantastic Sicilian called 'Il Panzier' where the service is second to none.

It is as it says a lovely old rambling traditional farmhouse with bags of character and charm

  • 5 of 5

This was an ideal house for a family of 8 and could take more. Plenty of rooms, private areas, courtyard, roof top to escape to. Views across countryside and not overlooked. Pool is a good size for all activities and ages. Wonderful housekeeping service and on tap advice. We were there in July and it was hot, but a cool breeze takes some of the heat away. Walking distance to a selection of restaurants in Gharb, and local shop. The local bus service from the end of the street on the hour is excellent for those who want to be independent . Go for an early morning walk up to the lighthouse for stunning views of Gozo and you get a good perception of what the island is really like .

We all loved it.

Great farmhouse Gozo style that met all our expectations

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed staying in this farmhouse full of charachter. Perfect for large groups as there are many bedrooms. The location is great and piecefull, offering fine views of the valley, sunsets, and the sea. The pool was great during hot days. Doris is really nice and helpfull, and even though before the stay we didn't really see the point in having a maid coming in every day you quickly ger used to it and it's a great service helping you relax even more. So all in all, a great place that we will return to.

Fabulous holiday.

  • 5 of 5

We loved the farmhouse but there were some things that didn't suit us as a family. We were a group of 9 adults but there were only 5 sun beds and not a lot of room around the pool when everybody was together. There weren't any wardrobes or even somewhere to hang clothes in the downstairs bedroom, we ended up draping then over the put you up beds. No wardrobe in the twin room upstairs either. .Having said this we had a fabulous holiday and Doris was wonderful. The kitchen had everything we needed, lots of crockery and glassware etc. The owners were really kind and let us arrive and leave at times that suited us. This was great because you have to plan around ferry times. We love Gozo and would recommend a holiday here.

Owner's Response: Hi Jennifer, Thank you for leaving a review and I'm delighted you had a fabulous time. I hope your parents coped OK with the uneven stairs and the hot sun! I appreciate your comments about the hanging space. We've considered a wardrobe for the twin room and ended up with the hanging space on the wall as a compromise, which is sufficient for most people's needs on holiday. But there's definitely no space for a wardrobe in the 'overflow' bedroom/ping pong room downstairs. We mainly use this for children as they tend to not be too bothered about hanging their clothes up(!) and there is a chest of drawers. So I agree, the house does work best if there are children as well as adults in a large group. Having said that, there are additional deck-chairs that can be used by the pool, although you wouldn't have known where to get them out from unless you'd asked Doris. I'll ask her to be aware of this in future and tell the guests that there are deck chairs if they want them. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed yourselves and found everything you needed in the kitchen. Best wishes Polly

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review which is much appreciated. It's the first 4 out of 5 (previously all have been 5 out of 5) so I'd love to hear if there's anything specific which we could do to improve the experience of staying in the farmhouse. Perhaps you'd be kind enough to email me directly with any comments or suggestions for improvements. Many thanks Polly

Et perfekt hus for mange mennesker.

  • 5 of 5

Et veldig fint hus med masse plass. Vi var ti personer som koste oss her en uke. Veldig deilig at Doris kom hver dag.
