About this property

Superb chalet: 50m to ski lift. 6 large bedrooms, sleeps 12, sauna & steam rooms

Chalet le Dahu is perfectly situated directly opposite the ski lift, ESF ski school and ice rink in the centre of La Grande Terche - the mountain village of Saint Jean d’Aulps. This beautiful chalet offers unparalleled access to the lifts of Roc d’Enfer.

The chalet is artisan built to a very high standard comfortably sleeping twelve adults in six large bedrooms. It is spacious throughout and has both sauna and steam rooms, ideal accommodation for families and friends on holiday together.

Morzine, Avoriaz and Lets Gets are nearby and easily accessible,
by car or ski bus, giving you freedom to explore the twelve linked Alpine resorts of France and Switzerland, which make up the vast Portes du Soleil ski area.

The Roc d’Enfer ski area at La Grande Terche is one of the best kept secrets of Portes du Soleil, uncrowded skiing for all abilities - 50km of pisted runs and excellent off-piste skiing for the more adventurous - you will rarely find a queue whilst skiing in this area.

The slopes at the top of the gondola are perfect to learn the basics, then enjoy the freedom of the quiet runs and the incredible views of Mont Blanc and Dents du Midi at the top. For those not skiing but wanting to join in the fun, watch from the sunny terrace of the mountain restaurants, an easy meeting point, or head back to the chalet for lunch.

The Circuit du Roc d’Enfer is a scenic 20km route of great skiing for all, including two 5km runs. It is truly magical, often skiing on empty slopes, with opportunities for off- piste skiing and black runs, or enjoy the route through the forest and stop at the restaurants en route.

Chalet le Dahu has a large terrace to soak up the sunshine and spectacular mountain views, the perfect place to watch skiers on the ‘home run’ or to enjoy lazy summer afternoons. After a day on the slopes, relax in the sauna or the steam room and then take a short stroll to the local bars and restaurants.

The convenience of being at the very heart of La Grande Terche makes organising your skiing holiday easy. Portes du Soleil and Roc d’Enfer lift passes can be purchased at the lift station opposite the chalet, the ski passes for Roc d'Enfer are exceptionally good value. Jean-Marc and his friendly team at Muffat Sports will look after all your equipment needs.

The local charcuterie/fromagerie and the Sherpa minimart for your morning croissants and other essentials are a 100m walk away. There is a Carrefour Express in Saint Jean and a large Carrefour market en route to Morzine.

The mountain restaurants at the top of the bubble, on the circuit and at the Terche are enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. Details of all amenities will be sent in the information pack before your arrival.

To ski the twelve linked Alpine resorts of France and Switzerland, of the vast Portes du Soleil ski area, it is an easy drive from the chalet to the free parking at the Ardent cable car. This takes you directly to Les Lindarets bowl with lifts to Avoriaz, Morzine, Chatel and Champery to mention just a few. For those not wanting to drive there is a free shuttle bus down to St Jean d’Aulps tourist office from outside the chalet where you connect with the ski buses into Morzine and Ardent.

Chalet le Dahu in Summer .

In the summer the cool fresh air and quiet of La Grande Terche make it a perfect location for your holiday. Relax on the terrace and enjoy the mountain views; lunch on the veranda or BBQ in the shade of the garden on hot summer afternoons

Summer in the Alps offers a vast array of activities. The lift at La Grande Terche is open every day giving easy access to the Roc d’Enfer area for hiking, mountain biking, mountain karting and a pump track. You can hire bikes and karts at the Terche.

Pétanque is played enthusiastically at the Terche by locals and visitors - feel free to join in the Friday evening competition, the pitch side bar is lively!

Restaurant L’Etabli and the Avalanche bar are open most days, as is the Sherpa minimart for your provisions.

Numerous walks with incredible views and access to the mountain restaurants, many starting from the chalet. There are well signposted walking paths - wander into Saint-Jean through the woods for coffee or lunch. To visit Graydon you can hike up from the Terche, walk down from the top of the cable car, or drive up through Essert-Romand. Guided walks are run by DaysAway Adventures from the Terche.

The cycling and mountain biking paths in the area are world class - now electric mountain bikes enable all to take part! The tourist office in Saint Jean D’Aulps has information on everything going on in the area.

Morzine and Les Gets will be buzzing with mountain bikers, downhill cyclists and electric bikers. Enjoy your days out then return to Chalet le Dahu and enjoy the peace and cooler air of La Grande Terche on the terrace.

Other activities for the adventurous include white water rafting, canyoning, horse riding, paragliding, numerous via ferattas and rock climbing. Contacts are in the information provided and need to be booked in advance during the summer season.

Lac Montriond is a 15 minute drive away and offers beautiful scenic walks, a waterfall and fabulous refreshing swimming in the lac, or in the smaller ‘swimming lac’ for the kids. In Morzine centre there is an outdoor and indoor swimming pool, tennis and padel courts and a skateboard park. Golf is available locally in Les Gets and Avoriaz, you can hire clubs at both. The championship course at Evian Resort Golf Club is 40 minutes drive from the chalet, a challenge for even the best golfers.

Lac Leman is a 25 minute drive down the mountain for sailing, swimming, scuba diving and numerous cafes and restaurants by the lake shore. Thonon-les-Bains offers shopping and access to transport by train or by boat to Geneva, Lausanne and further afield.

Yvoire and Nernier are beautiful medieval towns by Lac Leman and well worth a visit. Evian-les-Bains and the famous bottled water are en route to Montreux - exploring the area has endless possibilities.

Great apartment, great location
Communication was great, the chalet was wonderful. We were 3 families, each with a 3 and a 5 year old. Great place that allowed us easy access to the slopes, space for the kids to play (and for the adults when the kids were asleep). The owners were super helpful as well.

About the host

Hosted by Marcelle Young

Host profile image
Iain and Marcelle moved from the UK to Singapore in 1996 – a 5 year initial commitment turned into a much longer stay and we are still there!
Our 3 children have flown the nest and returned to the UK so for us, the chance to swap the heat and humidity of Asia for the fresh clean mountain air of the Alps - to get the family together in one place to ski and enjoy the summer activities in the mountains - seemed a logical and fun thing to do.

Why they chose this property

We first stayed and skied at La Grande Terche with friends who spent time researching various locations in the Alps and decided to purchase a chalet here. On our way to the gondola we would pass Chalet Le Dahu and admire it from the outside, both aesthetically and by reason of its proximity to the slopes, the restaurant and the bars - we saw a future for our family and jumped at the opportunity. So far no regrets!

What makes this property unique

Chalet Le Dahu was built on the site of an old barn dating from 1759 and several of the old beams and wood from the barn have been woven into the chalet that replaced it. The chalet is large, spacious and beautifully finished to a very high standard both inside and out. However what really makes the chalet unique is its location - luxury right in the centre of the village. Nothing is more than a stone's throw away.
