About this property

Between Sarlat and Domme, 1km from the Dordogne river, Live the French dream

La Chouette (The Owl), is a beautiful, luxurious Perigordine farmhouse, situated in a peaceful elevated south facing position, with woodland, amazing views, and surrounded by wildlife, including deer, hare, woodpeckers, birds of prey, and of course Owls. The property is private, and not overlooked, and is for your own exclusive use.

Rarely do you find a house that is so centrally located, within 15 mins of Sarlat, Domme, the Dordogne River, Beynac, La Roque Gageac, Chateau Castelnaud, etc., while offering so much peace and tranquillity to experience the true French country lifestyle. 2 mins down the hill by car in Grolejac is a Butcher, Bakery, Supermarket, and 3 restaurants. You can also walk to a lovely rustic french restaurant which takes about 15 mins (1km), La Borie Blanche, copy and paste this url https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g580128-d2291931-Reviews-La_Borie_Blanche-Domme_Dordogne_Aquitaine.html to see the TripAdvisor reviews!

The private 12m x 5m Heated Salt Water Pool is crystal clear and an absolute joy. So often we have rented a gite with a pool and found it just isn’t warm enough to swim in…but no worries here with the heating. It is fenced, with a gate that is difficult to open for children, and there is also a pool alarm. There are 8 comfortable sun beds, and pool towels provided. The outside kitchen near the pool offers a large quality BBQ, working area, sink, and fridge, along with an undercover terrace with dining table for 8 people. The pool is equipped with underwater lighting which is a dream to look at on a late summer evening. Next to the pool is a fully equipped shower room, wc and wash basin, enabling you to shower after your last swim, without having to drag yourself away from the pool…children seem to love this also, then you’re ready for the BBQ and a glass of wine!

Full of French charm and character, La Chouette offers elegant light and bright accommodation, but keeping a warm & homely feel, offering 4 individual bedrooms (3 x King Size Beds, 1 x Twin 3ft Beds), an en-suite bathroom with bath and separate shower to the King size bedroom downstairs, 3 further bedrooms upstairs, and another shower room. Including the fully equipped shower room near the pool, there are 3 bath/shower rooms in total. The stylish, well equipped kitchen with stone work surfaces is lovely to work in, with lots of recipe books to ponder over, and larder items available for your use, without having to buy them from the supermarket and only using them once! It has doors to the outside terrace, and a rather posh Lacanche range cooker. The large living/dining room has a log burner if needed out of season, and French doors onto the terrace. Downstairs you will also find a utility room with washer and dryer, and at the other side of the hall a separate WC, with bidet and wash hand basin. The TV has English channels.

For children you can visit a castle and become a Knight or Damsel, visit Eagles rock birds of prey (where they walk on your head, and have Griffon Vultures with a 10’ wing span!), the Aquarium at Le Bugue where they also have Anacondas and pythons, and fish you can stroke, Horse Riding, Paint Balling, Kayaking, Canoeing, Tree Top Trekking, Cycling, Rock Climbing, Pot Holing, Caves, Gardens at Marqueyssac on Thursday night lit with candles etc.

La Chouette is beautifully furnished with a mix of new and old, Laura Ashley, White Company, Voyage Maison, mixed with some antique furniture and pleasing artwork, we’re sure you will find it a very comfortable, relaxing place to spend your holiday, and hope you can treat it as your home for the duration of your stay.

We continue to improve our property and have recently added a new terrace awning, new pool cover, new parasols and Sonos music. We also have two electric bikes available for use.

Ideal property for a family
There were 5 adults and an infant and it was ideal. Great location in the heart of a wonderful area and after looking around coming back to a fantastic property to enjoy our time in the Dordogne

French Summer Holiday
We travelled all the way from Australia to spend 10 nights in this beautiful property. We had high expectations and it did not disappoint. The house, gardens and pool are wonderful; the perfect place to relax and unwind after a morning of exploring the surrounding areas. The green book they provided with local recommendations was invaluable, we tried many of the restaurants mentioned and also the activities- all of which were fantastic. We were very happy to meet Simon and Pip at the end of our stay, they very kindly let us check out when we were ready..as we had a lot of packing to do. Lovely people and a lovely home. Thanks so much to you both! Simon and Pip, (the Australian ones)

Beautiful house in stunning part of France
We had a wonderful stay in your beautiful house. The surrounding area is stunning and we had a truly relaxing holiday. We particularly loved the extendable awning over the table in front of the house as it allowed us to eat all of our meals outside but shaded from the sun

We spent two very relaxing weeks in this superb property. Great views, peaceful and lovely gardens. The pool was a great place to cool off and relax, particularly as temperatures soared in the second week.

Pip and Simon are both solicitors and partners in life as well as work. We live and work in Nottingham and have three grown up children between us as well as two cats. In addition to La chouette we also have a seafront villa on the island of Korcula in Croatia as well as a classic apartment in the heart of Budapest. La chouette was the final piece in the jigsaw for us. As the youngest child departs for university our time has come. Our pension is our properties. We live in each one for a while and then move to the next! Aren't we lucky we hear you say. Thus, you are not staying in an investment property but a home. We pride ourselves on our properties and maintain high standards. We are personally available on the end of a phone at any time to answer any queries. This property is the final piece in our jigsaw.

Why they chose this property

We are both francophiles having holidayed in France from an early age. As mentioned we have other overseas property but were missing the one thing we both loved ...France. It was therefore a case of drawing up a list of what would constitute the ideal French dream. Location always comes first. What is the most beautiful area of France? The Dordogne. Where is the weather usually perfect? The Dordogne. Is it easily accessed? Yes. So the search began. Being perfectionists it took some considerable time. Hours spent trawling the internet was followed by numerous visits to France and hours on the road looking at hundreds of properties. You know when you find the right one . It hits you the minute you clap eyes on it. That is La Chouette.

What makes this property unique

We couldn't quite believe La chouette when we found it. It ticks all the boxes. Location wise you are in the golden triangle zone of the Dordogne with all the best bits on your doorstep. Rural but not isolated a 3 minute trip down the hill brings you to the boulangerie, the butchers, the mini supermarket and the bar/brasserie. The restaurant La Borie Blanche is a short walk. Domme is 8 to ten minutes away and Sarlat 15. The river is on your doorstep.
As for the property itself we needed four good sized bedrooms. We wanted character but with all mod cons. We wanted views, nature and space. We wanted a good sized heated pool for those languid summer days. A summer kitchen with all amenities for barbecuing and eating outside. A beautiful and colourful garden with lots of seating and leisure spaces, Wi Fi, HD smart television a top quality kitchen were crucial. Open fire, central heating utility room plenty of loos (inside and out) plus a homely feel. We had to have fig trees, a vine, a wisteria. Even dart board and ping pong were on the list. We feel we've ticked all those boxes.
We only completed our purchase in September 2017, buying from the previous owners Lorri and Dave who were gutted to sell. Every single owners direct review they received was five star and absolutely gushing. See them for yourself. If it 'aint broke don't change it. Thus we have kept the property as they did. A true gem.
