About the property

Coach House & Dairy Cottage

Luxurious living, steeped in history: Dating from 1820 and fully renovated in 2000 and 2012, the Coach House and the Dairy Cottage were originally part of Stanwick Hall, the home of the Duchess of Northumberland. The Coach House and Dairy Cottage both enjoy great privacy and their own gardens, but can also be combined to form elegant and spacious accommodation for up to 13 guests in great comfort.

Details for the Coach House

This luxurious Yorkshire Dales country house has 4 comfortable bedrooms, a large, well-equipped kitchen with Aga, spacious lounge with log burner leading into a beautiful conservatory overlooking south-facing, private gardens. Please click on the link below for more details.

Details for the Dairy Cottage

Converted in 2012, this architect-designed delightful hideaway is all on one level and has its own large garden. The large living area (8m x 5m) is open-plan, with a dining area at one end and a well equipped kitchen leading off. There is a lovely log burner, a large roof atrium and wide arched glass doors leading into the gardens. Leading off the lounge is a spacious bedroom, again with hand-made double arched glass doors opening onto private south-facing gardens.Dairy Cottage is flooded with light whatever the weather and the use high quality natural materials throughout - oak floors and hand-made doors, Jerusalem stone in the shower room and a solid wood kitchen - create a calm and peaceful environment for relaxation.

Environmental sustainability was important to us when we designed this conversion, as was the need to stay true to the original building and re-use as much of the original stone and other materials as possible, so the Dairy Cottage has underfloor heating supplied by a wood-pellet boiler to keep it cozy and warm in the winter months.

Further details about the Coach House

Approached through the tall sandstone gate piers and into a spacious driveway the stunning architecture of the Coach House will make your stay a special one, whether you are entertaining in the cozy dining room, cooking on the Aga with friends in the roomy kitchen, sitting by the fire in the spacious lounge or simply relaxing with a good read in the light and airy conservatory or mezzanine. Children love this place - they can explore and play safely to their hearts' content whilst parents can relax and enjoy this rather special Grade II listed home with all the modern conveniences. The house has a wing with 2 double bedrooms, a triple room and a bathroom with a walk-in shower which means that 2 families can enjoy complete privacy. The spacious master suite is the only bedroom on the first floor. It has French doors opening onto a Juliet balcony with private, uninterrupted south-facing views over beautiful parkland , a Super King bed and ensuite shower room. Also on the first floor is a large mezzanine for lounging and browsing through the house library of books and games.

In the East wing of the Coach House there is a very large kitchen, with a breakfast table that seats 8 people, all the modern appliances you might need, and a French door opening onto a sun-trap with outdoor seating overlooking the south-facing gardens and parkland beyond. There is a beautiful dining room that seats 8 in comfort and this has a lovely wood-burning stove to provide a cozy ambiance for your entertaining. The spacious lounge has bi-fold glass doors that open into the large conservatory, providing a 34’x18’ living area. There is also a very large utility room for all your outdoor gear, an additional fridge-freezer and washing and drying facilities. In all there are over 3000 sq ft of living area, so there is plenty of room for everyone to find a quiet corner as well as 4 spacious reception rooms to socialise in. There is everything you need at the Coach House – it’s a real home from home.

Decorated to a high standard, with hardwood flooring and 300 year old stone pillars in the impressive entrance hall, the Coach House is stylishly furnished and very well equipped. You will enjoy fast broadband Internet access; high quality Hi-Fi in the lounge for music lovers; very well equipped kitchen with a 5 burner gas hob in addition to the Aga, NEFF combination microwave and electric fan oven, juicer, bread maker, ice cream maker, 2 fridges, dishwasher, quality stereo and beautiful garden views. There is a range of garden furniture and large barbecue. Parking for up to 5 cars. Walled gardens and electric gates give total privacy.

Things to see and do: The Coach House is situated in peaceful, rolling countryside between the River Swale and the Tees, on the ancient site of the 2000 year old Brigantes settlement. Children love exploring the Coach House and its gardens, playing table tennis or playing on their bikes on the private roads. There is an abundance of historical monuments within 20 minutes' drive - castles, abbeys, earthworks, villages and towns to name but a few. Walkers will love the Yorkshire Dales, England's largest and most impressive National Park is just 15 minutes' drive away and the Lake District is just over an hour's drive with sailing, hiking, wind surfing and much more. Enjoy horse riding from the nearby stables (you can walk there!) on the perfect network of bridleways or play a round of golf at the nearby course at Richmond in the middle of beautiful countryside. Going slightly further afield, explore the stunning North Yorkshire coastline and enjoy the delights of Whitby, just over an hour's drive away.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This countryside property was exactly as described, if not better. As we arrived, we were greeted by a lovely man who showed us around and gave us some background information on the property and the surrounding area. The house was spotless and furnished immaculately, which to us, was extremely impressive. A lovely, bright, spacious living room for the group to relax in (could have done with one more sofa), adjoined to a sweet conservatory, which when the doors are opened is breezy, warm and snug. The grounds are lovely, we enjoyed a bbq and table tennis, and just lounging outside looking at the beautiful plants and flowers the garden held. The kitchen was the highlight - all the equipment and utensils one could ask for, with a large window overlooking the garden, making the washing up seem a much less arduous task. The owner was particularly friendly, helping us with walks and tips for the surrounding area.

Overall, I would recommend this property wholeheartedly and I would go back in a heartbeat, especially as it is EXCELLENT value for money. A wonderful holiday, made even more enjoyable by the smooth running of business, no problems whatsoever.

Ideal rural stay for a big group

  • 5 of 5

We chose the Coach House because of its proximity to lots of points we were interested in visiting as a family, including the local iron age earthworks, walks in Teesdale and the market towns of the Yorkshire Dales.

We found it wonderfully private, spacious, peaceful and secluded. The property is an interesting and pretty one, with lots of living space for a larger family or group. The children loved the private garden, looking out onto fields, and we appreciated how the owner Simon had provided a table tennis table, which was good fun for everyone. The living room is particularly comfortable and elegant, and the location meant we could enjoy our relaxation time completely undisturbed.

Excellent stay - will use again!

Beautiful countryside getaway

  • 5 of 5

This gorgeous, tranquil and grandom house is well worth a visit! We came here for a family getaway and we couldn't have chosen a better place. The property is spacious and very well equipped, with a big garden and patio area, a formal dining room as well as a large kitchen and a lovely cosy lounge. There was plenty of space for all of us to relax and we loved the peace and quiet. Thanks for a lovely stay - we'll be back!

Lovely house, main bathroom needs updating

  • 3 of 5

Lovely house in lovely location, we had a great weekend with friends and family. Only let down was that for a property of this kind I expected a luxury bathroom to relax in however the main bathroom is in need of modernisation to bring up to the standard if the rest of the house.

Owner's Response: Thanks for choosing the Coach House for your holiday. I am sorry you did not like our style when it comes to the house bathroom - we have in fact recently renovated this bathroom and decided to keep it in a style which is fitting for a historic Grade II building. We understand that some guests may prefer "modern" fittings, but all our fittings are of very high quality and we think they complement the style and feel of the Coach House. We are glad you had a lovely stay and will come and visit again soon. Best wishes Simon

Spacious and gracious accommodation

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Coach House for a week in July, with my father in law in his late 80's, myself and my husband, and 2 20 year old children. Simon was very quick to answer any questions when we were arranging the booking. We were made welcome by Kay on arrival who showed us in and around the property. It is a beautiful house which has been renovated to a high standard and equipped well. It is a spacious place to stay and is the closest most of us will come to glimpsing life on a country estate. There are 3 big tables to eat at (1 outside, 1 in the kitchen and 1 in the dining room), plenty of plates, mugs and bowls, pans and knives, and of course the essential wifi. The beds are roomy and very comfortable. We brought bikes and enjoyed lovely rides on the quiet roads around and also walks on the many footpaths. The garden is great for games and is sheltered with a view over fields. It was a very restful week and with the neighbouring cottage too would make a great place for reunions of family or friends.

Owner's Response: Thanks you for your brief review - I don't feel it reflects particularly fairly the many good points of the Coach House , which most guests do not view as an "average" holiday rental! Perhaps it simply wasn't the house for you? Tranquility, space, peace and quiet and NO MOBILE signal at the house is precisely what most people find so appealing about the Coach House. You can receive texts and there is a signal a few hundred yards up the road, which is more than adequate for most people when they are on holiday. I can only apologise that the table tennis table had been broken by the previous guests, who had not told us so we had no chance to replace it before your stay- it is now back in service and enjoyed by all. There is no tumble dryer for guests to use in the house but there is one for your use in the garage on request - sorry if this was not made clear to you at the time. Thanks for your feedback about the lack of bathroom lock on the house bathroom, we will sort that straightaway.

Spacious historic building

  • 3 of 5

This is a lovely property with lots of space, great location for a peaceful holiday but plenty of interesting places to visit if you want to explore the area. For walkers the Teesdale way can be joined at various locations nearby. It has a superb master bedroom and one of the best kitchens we'vehad in many years of cottage holidays. We've marked it down because the downstairs bathroom isn't up to the standard claimed for the property. It's very tired (not shown in picture gallery). The shower head didn't stay in place and the door leaked a lot so we had to mop up every time it was

used. As the heating was broken when we

were there it made it an even more challenging experience. The owner responded to our issues and says both heating and shower have been fixed. As we were holidaying with an elderly relative and we aren't young ourselves, we found the sofas very low/difficult to get out of and uncomfortable after sitting any length of time. The chairs in the conservatory are good and we could move them into the living room but that was hardly ideal. The conservatory offers a bright sitting area with super outlook but has no blinds so is too hot to sit in on warm days. Having said all this it would make a lovely holiday home for families with young children: there's.a play area on the large landing and lots of toys provided. The property is well cared for and the housekeeper very helpful.

Owner's Response: We are always grateful for constructive feedback! I'm just sorry that one or two minor niggles with the bathroom caused you to rate us as "average" since the Coach House most definitely is not average - 45 guests who left 5 star reviews on Tripadvisor can't all be wrong! The heating problem is fixed - the oil boiler broke down and could not be repaired at such short notice. We provided 6 electric heaters and made sure the house was toasty warm, by turning up the Aga to full power and providing as many logs as needed for the two woodburners. Free of charge, of course. We have re-decorated the downstairs bathroom, it is not at all "tired" - the style is in keeping with a historic house and perhaps not to everyone's taste? We think you'll love our powerful shower now. Our sofas are modern and very comfy for lounging in, and there are numerous other options for sitting comfortably, in the rest of the house as well as the conservatory, which does have blinds, but were drawn at the time of this let. We do hope you'll come again and enjoy the luxury and comfort of the Coach House - we'll even make sure we provide a couple of extra armchairs that are easy to get out of for elderly people if you give us enough notice of any special requirements.
