Overview

Photos and Description of this Carlux holiday villa

Charming 4-bedroom, 2 bathroom house with breathtaking views, garden and jacuzzi

This unique 18th century stone house built onto the ramparts of an 11th century castle has fully enclosed gardens, terraces, jacuzzi and is toddler friendly with many baby/child extras available. It is a dream come true for romantics and those passionate about medieval history, perfect for a relaxing affordable family holiday or a romantic stress-free getaway.

Doted with antique hand made furniture, chestnut high-beamed ceilings and meter-thick walls, this charming, historic and recently renovated property is a pure delight. Built with stones from the adjacent castle, Château Cottage blends the authentic traditional style of the Perigord region with the full comforts of modern living.

Château Cottage is ideally located in the heights of the beautiful and peaceful medieval village of Carlux in the heart of the Dordogne Valley with plenty of parking and all amenities within walking distance, yet only a short drive to major historical sites.

The Exterior: The front garden has long blooming white roses that grace the 100 year-old wrought iron gate. Honeysuckle and wisteria and vine-covered trellises wind their way around the house to the charming side terrace.

The fully-enclosed back garden, bordered by the tall ramparts and tower of the 11th century Castle of Carlux, has a separate terrace leading out from the downstairs bedroom. Graced by jasmine, rosemary and elegant old roses trees, this completely private garden and with jacuzzi open out onto splendid views of the rolling valley of Carlux. Having dinner prepared in the open barbecue pit at the base of the castle ramparts is an unforgettable experience not to be missed.

Château Cottage is located in the heart of the tiny classed village of Carlux. Plenty of parking is available in front of the house. A two-minute walk downhill brings you to all amenities: café/restaurant, bakery, corner shop/newsagents, a butcher’s shop, doctor’s office, post office, and farmer’s market.

The Interior: The spacious sunken living room features the huge hand-worked stones of the castle ramparts, a high oak-beamed ceiling and polished chestnut floors. It has lots of natural light thanks to two large double-glazed picture windows and a glass door opening out onto a terrace and private garden. Equipped with a cast iron wood burning stove, this magnificent room is as warm and cosy in the winter as it is cool and airy in the summer.

The large, roomy chef's kitchen has a traditional Perigordan “cantou” fireplace with copper accents, featuring an antique walnut farmhouse table for dining.

The downstairs bedroom is fitted with high oakwood beams and double doors which open out to a private flowered terrace with gorgeous views. There is a luxurious full bathroom on this floor, newly fitted with exquisite mosaic stone floor tiles, a black marble sink and an Italian shower. It is equipped with hand rails for reduced mobility guests.

Upstairs there are two elegant bedrooms with polished chestnut floors furnished with antiques, and one joyfully decorated children's room. The two central rooms have double beds, one with a stunning view of the valley of Carlux (featured in the photo section), and the other (with the possibility of two double beds) with a wonderful view of Carlux's beautifully restored XVII century church. The charming full bathroom on this floor is fitted with delicate hand made Italian tiles and an exotic hardwood floor.

Baby and young child equipment (high chair, crib, bed bottle warmers etc.) is available.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My husband and I stayed with our daughter and son-in-law and 2 grandchildren in this lovely home for 6 days in October. There were toys and and a sandpit for the children and the large country kitchen had everything you could possibly need. Opening up the shutters of the bedroom windows in the morning to the view of the beautiful valley below was a joy. As it was hot when we stayed there, we made full use of the outside spa. There is a small shop a few minutes down the hill where we walked in the mornings to pick up our bread and milk. This is a great spot for exploring the Dordogne and we would definitely stay here again.

Blissful Springtime in Carlux

  • 5 of 5

The photo sold me from the moment I saw it. The "cottage" with blue shutters was everything my husband and I had hoped for during our month-long stay in the Dordogne River Valley. It is well situated on the main square of a small, quiet village and is close to larger towns and myriad tourist sites.

The house was just as charming as pictured. Everything was tidy and in good working order. If there was a problem, the property manager was always promptly responsive as well as a good resource for local attractions and restaurant recommendations. The kitchen was well equipped and spacious. We hardly used the upstairs bedrooms and bath, but the house can easily accommodate up to 6 adults or a family with small children. WiFi and TV reception were good.

We were perfectly situated for taking long walks or riding bikes along the country roads or the bike path, which wound through the farmlands and woods in between the larger towns. Evening soaks in the Jacuzzi on the private terrace were a treat after a long day of sightseeing.

The property manager speaks limited English, but we were able to communicate with him by phone and e-mail in our equally limited French. We also felt free to contact the owner, who would promptly communicate our needs to the property manager, so we were never left in the lurch when we needed assistance.

I have no hesitation recommending this property to adults or families looking for a relaxing week or longer in the Perigord Noir region.

Suggestions for improvement:

We were sent a house reference manual by e-mail, but a hard copy in the house, including grocery shopping locations and restaurant recommendations, is needed. Some of the appliances were tricky to figure out, and there were no manuals, so be sure to have the property manager show you how to use everything.

A most charming vacation home!

  • 5 of 5

This is an absolutely charming home decorated with beautiful antiques. Nice patio allowing us to eat most of our meals outside. Plus imagine taking a hot tub with looking onto illuminated walls of an 11th century castle! The village is lovely, with only a few stores, but all of them top quality, including a boulangerie/patisserie, boucher, and epicerie. Plus the surrounding area is incredibly delightful; lots of hiking trails through villages, and if you think the French are not friendly, your perceptions will be realigned. Plus if you are a cyclist, you can rent bikes nearby and ride to your heart's delight on small country lanes, as well as a dedicated bike/hiking path along the Dordogne. Highly recommended, just hope your reservation doesn't interfere with our hopes to return!

CHARMING HOUSE

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 8 nights and we had a wonderfull time. The village of Carlux is quiet and beautyfull. The house was everything the descriptions offered, ...cozy with a maginificent view attached to a XII century castle.

Bedrooms and bathrooms were excellent.

We had wonderfull time in the Perigord, and the house made the difference.

Memories made here to last a lifetime

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed in this beautiful cottage with another couple with whom we are good friends. Upon arrival we were greeted by the property manager and made to feel very welcome. He showed us around and explained how appliances etc worked. The cottage was spotlessly clean and the location. layout and facilities were exactly as represented in the listing. We found the cottage to be comfortable with plenty of space, a fully equipped kitchen, comfortable beds and a beautiful big dining table where we ate, planned our day and reflected on our adventures.

The cottage is a 2 min stroll to the main street. We walked to the Boulangerie every morning and bought fresh croissants for breakfast. There is also a small grocery shop, a pub and a boucher/Charcuterie. We found the people of the village to be warm, welcoming and friendly and had some great experiences and laughs with them, despite our inability to speak a word of french.

We had a wonderful time in this cottage and made memories that we will treasure forever. If we are are lucky enough to be able to have another holiday in this region, we will definitely stay here again. I am completely comfortable recommending this cottage.

Fantastic location from which to explore

  • 5 of 5

The house is oozing charm and character. Every evening we ate outside on the terrace admiring the spectacular views. The house itself has plenty of room and even our large party (4 couples and 2 children) all fitted in. But probably the ideal group size would be 8. Village is very quiet. One very nice restaurant. But the best bit is the location; you are ideally placed to explore so many attractions in the region, all within easy driving distance. Loads to do. Great house. Great location.

Great home and location in Dordogne

  • 5 of 5

My immediate and extended family stayed here this past summer. The home is exactly as described in the listing - charming, old and perfectly equipped. Carlux is a great little town and both the home and location worked out perfectly for our week long stay in the region. The big benefit of the house is that it has 4 comfortably sized bedrooms and 2 baths (none attached to rooms) - makes it perfect for groups where everyone is "equal." The central kitchen and dining room are a great gathering area, as is the living room. WIFI worked perfectly, both the owner and property manager were GREAT - very responsive, professional and easy to reach (not that we needed to). Would highly recommend this property!!!!
