Ever wondered what it would be like to live on a houseboat? Devolu offers you a convenient base to visit the sites of Paris, go to Disneyland and the Château de Versailles while coming home each day to an amazing experience of another kind. One of the most luxurious boats on the Seine, Devolu offers fabulous river views, indoor and outdoor dining, excellent transport facilities and a mooring spot in an exclusive neighborhood that is so green and calm that you won't believe it possible just a few minutes journey from the Eiffel Tower!
The living area, dining room, kitchen and terrace are on the upper level of the boat, with 360° windows, air-conditioning and designer furniture. The four bedrooms are below deck, each with a huge window looking out at water level. It is a dream home that presents visitors with just one problem - they don't to want to leave it to go sightseeing! We're particularly pleased by the fact that many of our customers have returned two or more times since we made the boat available to rent.
As an author and a journalist, I work from home most of the time, so it's really important to me to be in a pleasant and tranquil environment. About 25 years ago, I discovered the ideal way of achieving this while still having all the advantages of being in the big city - living on a boat! Having made the move onto water, I've never once wanted to go back to living on the land.
The Owner purchased this boat in 2010
Devolu is the third boat I've owned and much the most luxurious. Quite apart from the sheer size and beauty of the boat itself, it offered us the chance to live somewhere that combined ease of access to the centre of Paris with an extraordinary quality of life. Most people don't realise that Paris, unlike other capital cities, has officially not grown any bigger for a couple of hundred years now - the city's borders are the same as they were defined as being in the 19th century! In reality, of course, it has been growing all the time, swallowing up outlying towns. Meudon, where the boat is moored, is about one kilometre outside that 19th century city border, and has always been popular with artists and well-off Parisians - the sculptor Rodin lived here, and his house can be visited up the hill from where the boat is moored. From here, it takes me about 20 minutes on my bicycle to be on the Champs-Elysees - which is to say that if you equated Paris to London, Meudon is about as far from the centre of Paris as Notting Hill is from Trafalgar Square!
The first thing people who are not accustomed to boats ask is usually 'Is it humid?'. In Devolu's case, the answer is a very definite 'No!' - this is an ultra-modern conversion of an historic barge with better insulation than you find on most houses. The second thing they ask is 'Does it move a lot?' - the answer to that is 'Occasionally', but on the rare occasions that the barge is rocked by something going by it is very brief and not bothersome at all. This is the major advantage of not being right in the centre of Paris where the tour boats go by day and night, creating a lot of wake for the people who live on the river. Here, you have all the advantages of being near the centre, but a calm and green environment. And there's really nothing that compares with being on the water - as soon as people step on board a boat they feel as if they've entered a different world, leaving the city behind. You are instantly on holiday, somehow. It's a feeling I still get even after spending half my life living on boats - they take you away even when they're not travelling. Something we notice with a lot of the people who rent Devolu over the summer is that they're enjoying life on board so much that they have trouble leaving it to do all the things they planned to do in Paris!
We are gushing with praise for the wonderful holiday we had staying on the barge and exploring Paris. As a family we needed something to keep everyone happy and the easy access to the city and the seclusion and natural setting of the houseboat made a perfect combination. The interior space is lovely, decorated with quirky art and providing everything you need to live. The rooms are generous in size and well equipped. The weather was mixed during our stay and my children enjoyed playing the games and watching films when the rain kept us inside. The nearby supermarket has everything you need and the wonderful bakers is responsible for the extra pounds I'm now carrying!
The unexpected pleasures were watching the boats pass, and all the nature about. The comings and goings of the heron, eyeing newly hatched ducklings, and the big fish swimming in the water.
We used the mainline train into Montparnasse which was a 10 minute walk away. The trains were at least every fifteen minutes and the journey was about 12 minutes. A return ticket for all day transport is 9 Euros. I am a relatively inexperienced traveller and this was easy.
We would definitely stay here again. The owner was super helpful and a great communicator and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this experience of Paris.
We spent Christmas on the barge, perfect accommodation for 6 adults, warm light and airy. And we had a lovely Christmas tree and bottle of champagne that was a lovely extra surprise. We will be back, perfect location, quite no road noise but very easy to get into the centre of Paris, loads of room and very very comfortable beds which is a definite plus for a chronic back pain suffer can. Thank you again for a perfect stay, Helen
We had a lovely stay, with our 4 boys in Paris. The Devolu has all the comfort you need. It was clean, well maintained, excellent location, public transport nearby. You could even take a swim in the Seine, although the Gendarmerie didn,t approve ;-)
The owner is very helpful with providing additional information to make your stay even better.
Definitely recommendable !
Devolu offers two holidays in one - all the pleasures of Paris combined with life on board a truly exceptional houseboat with a mooring spot beside Ile St Germain, a highly sought-after island in the Seine just beside Paris' 15th Arrondissement. This exclusive island offers residents a calm, green stretch of the river just outside the centre of town, meaning everything is easily accessible but you can relax at the end of the day with a glass of wine and barbeque on deck (but none of the tour boats going by that are the bane of life on the Seine otherwise). It is also excellently placed both for heading out to attractions such as the Chateau de Versailles and Giverny, and its immediate vicinity offers a full range of shops, restaurants and other amenities. Parking is plentiful and reasonably priced in the immediate vicinity if you are travelling by car.
