Located in the heart of the Alpilles, Saint Rémy is one of the must of Provence. Its green and subtly scented valleys, its beautiful tastefully restored residences and its charming old streets have made its success ...
While strolling quietly through its narrow and winding streets, you will come across beautiful old fountains, small shaded squares welcoming pleasant restaurant terraces and elegant shops
From Place Jean Jaurès at the gates of the old town, you will follow a long succession of private mansions (often converted into a museum or art gallery), convents, chapels, and sumptuous 17th and 18th century residences.
The beauty of its landscapes and the quality of its light have inspired many artists, writers and painters.
The most famous is undoubtedly Vincent Van Gogh who painted more than 150 paintings in the countryside surrounding Saint Rémy de Provence
A walk on the places painted by the artist will allow you to discover the mountain of St Rémy, the fields of wheat and poppies, the olive trees and the cypresses which remain imperturbable more than a century later.
Saint Rémy de Provence, city of history, is built on one of the oldest archaeological sites in Europe. The vestiges of the Comptoir de Glanum founded in the 3rd century BC, then altered by the Romans under Julius Caesar. They bear impressive witness to the successive civilizations here. You can visit the large thermal baths, the long residential avenue, the temple and the natural source of a true Gallo-Roman city dating from 30 to 10 years BC. Two important monuments are visible near the site: the Arc de Triomphe and the Mausoleum of the Antiques.
Lovers of old stones, art and pretty boutiques will be at ease in Saint-Rémy. The beautiful properties around Saint-Rémy and the shaded terraces of Place Jean-Jaurès have also been hosting part of the show biz for several years. Far from the crowd of the coast, artists and celebrities can quietly appreciate the sweet atmosphere of Provence that we find here in Saint Rémy.
