Photos and Description of this Beziers area holiday chateau / country house

I min Walk to restaurants, studios, galleries, bars and bakeries, no car needed.

Spacious, child friendly, restaurants, studios, bars, tea and coffee shops, galleries and tourist office a step away. Large protected swimming pool, walled garden, orchard, balconies and terrace, vines and Wisteria, beams and high ceilings, many bathrooms, secure parking, peaceful place of character and perfect location in Pezenas. Home to writer and family, with fascinating photos/art on walls. Amazing range of restaurants, artist’s studios, quality food, wine, and craft shops a minute away. Extensive terrace and balconies. Pool and pond safely enclosed. Common reaction to the interior is – ‘Wow! Beautiful summer kitchen with large timber beams – opens onto large sheltered terrace where people normally eat, with palms and large pool shaped around it. Vast sitting room upstairs with large balcony and views of old town. Many bedrooms (4 en-suite, 2 with balconies + 2 more) on ground/1st/2nd floors. A Memorable Holiday. STOP PRESS. French Tourist Office just rated us ***** top five star

Some comments from past guests from our previous website: Mary and friends from Oxford: 'Pezenas is wonderful, and to step out and get to everything in a minute was perfect. The pool, terrace, balcony and garden were really nice, so we spent much of our time there, but it was good to have such a great choice of restaurants to go to as well.' Sergei from Moscow: 'Normally we try different places, but here we come back.' Stephanie from Canada: 'What a lovely home you have! Loved all the photos and art on the walls, and Pezenas is beautiful with really friendly people.' Kennedy group from London: 'The kids had a great time, and the gardien was so helpful to us. We were a big group but your house has so many different areas.' Xavier et al from Paris: 'The apricots and peaches in your garden were delicious, and now I see why Pezenas is so well known here in France.' More photos on our picasa site - just search under Alaric Wyatt in google.

What is so special about Pezenas?: Pezenas is famous because it is the town of Moliere, is very old, and has a splendid old quarter (just a few steps from the house). Many artists have their studios and galleries here, and the town is amazingly active in putting on events and attractions from the past, with sword fights, music, food festivals, antique bazaars, ballads and fireworks to name just a few. It has a large and colourful Saturday market, and in summer, the many little shops in the maze of alleys in the old quarter stay open till midnight during the 'nocturnes'. There are nearly 40 restaurants to choose from, all nearby. The tourist office is 1 minute from our house, is excellent, and their guided tour reveals many amazing buildings. All around Pezenas are famous vineyards, such as those of Faugeres, Corbieres and PicPoul, which you can visit. Pezenas is also home to world famous climber Alain Robert (Spiderman), who climbs the worlds highest buildings - he is often around in the bars and is very friendly.

About Alaric and Katia

We have four lively children who just love this house, garden and town, and every time we go back, they all cry out how much they want to live there. The pool and pond are an endless source of joy and fascination to them, and they love being able to just walk out into the centre of the town for an ice cream or to play football with the local kids, all on their own. It's an amazing place altogether, and it has certainly changed our lives, giving us loads of wonderful memories of meals and festivals (Pezenas is strong on such things) and visits around all the beaches and gorges and villages, or just chatting and sipping drinks in the lower garden amongst all the fruit trees and flowers. London, where we live, seems a very long way away when we are in Pezenas, and I think to our family, it is our house down there that is the more real of the two.

Alaric and Katia purchased this chateau / country house in 2000

Why Alaric and Katia chose Beziers area

I was told by all the estate agents in Pezenas that properties with all the features on my Must Have List did not exist in this town. They were all amused at my attempts to find such a place. Central, large, garden, swimming pool, parking, privacy, and quiet were the features on my list. A month later, by chance, I found one of the only cases that satisfied this list, and it had even more to it than that. What could I do? I bought it before all the estate agents could get their hands on it and charge 6% fees, and never looked back.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

No need at all for a car. Total proximity to all that matters, but it's like being in a country house somewhere, far from the crowds. Well, as they say, location, location, location.

wonderful house, wonderful town

  • 5 of 5

The house is beautiful, spacious and comfortable. The owner is gracious and responsive. The town of Pezenas is delightful. In short, our group of older adults could not have been happier with our stay in Maison Alaric. We enjoyed convivial meals in the large friendly kitchen, wine and nibbles on the patio by the pool in the evenings, the occasional venture into the pool itself. Yes, even mid- to late-September! Oh -- and we partook of figs, apples and grapes from the garden. We also loved wandering around the town, exploring its historic buildings, shops and restaurants, practicing our French language skills, which range from barely existent to sort-of-competent-but-still-clearly-not-French. Pretty perfect, all in all!

Owner's Response: Good reviews from Americans are particularly welcome. Why? Well, quite frankly, people from North America are used to a high level and quality of life, and are less easy to please as a rule. So when they are as happy as this group obviously is, we can relax a little, knowing that the house and location really is worth the five stars the Tourist Office have given us. But we still improve year on year, a little bit here and a little bit there, because the house is very important to us as a family - we lived there for quite a few years ourselves. So there it is. Another great review, but we still want to know how to improve things, because that's how things get better and better.

Lovely home for a large family

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 12 (three generations, with ages from 8 to 82) spent a week in this house. In our search for a suitable place, this house ticked all the boxes in terms of number of bedrooms needed (8), location (walkable to a town) and pool. But we hadn’t realized until we got there just how great the family areas would be, or how great Pezenas is.

The best part of the house is the kitchen/patio/pool area. We spent most of our family time there. The kitchen is huge, and very well equipped in terms of cooking facilities and dishes, glasses, etc. It has a large dining table, which we were able to get 12 people around for indoor dining. It also has a sofa and 2 large comfortable chairs. It opens onto the patio with more outdoor seating and 2 tables that pushed together allow 12 people to eat outside. Plus of course the pool, and a ping pong table that was constantly in use by our family.

The bedrooms vary in comfort, but if you have kids you can do what we did and assign them to the less-desirable ones (small and/or no windows) and keep the larger ones with ensuite facilities and window breezes for the adults. There are also plenty of showers, tubs and WCs.

The house décor is an interesting mix of elegant formality and “lived-in” casual vacation home. Wifi is great, although doesn’t reach all areas of the house. That is only an issue if you want to connect your Internet device – computer or tablet – to the downstairs TV. Otherwise, if you just want to check email or Google for information or directions somewhere you can easily find a strong signal in about half the house.

The owner and his local maintenance people are very responsive and helpful in all regards.

Finally, the town of Pezenas is charming, historic and full of good shops, cafes and restaurants. Even though you are in town, the house is quiet. But when you step out of the door, you are minutes on foot from bakeries for your morning croissants, plus markets, restaurants and shops for everything you need. There is free parking for more cars right behind the house, in addition to the two spaces inside the gates of the house.

We enjoyed our stay at Maison Alaric

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Maison Alaric. We had plenty of contact with Alaric before our arrival and he provided us with the ‘Book of the House’ which covered every detail of the letting from plumbing to WiFi and also included items of interest about the surrounding area. By the time we arrived we felt we knew everything there was to know.

It is a great house and can accommodate large groups or smaller. We varied between 16 and 9 (our core group) and we were all very comfortable and didn’t feel we filled the house at any time!

The kitchen is wonderful and if we were ‘at home’ we spent most of our evenings there though we did use the upstairs drawing/dining room once for a birthday celebration. Because we were there in September we didn’t spend our evenings on the terrace but I imagine that would be pleasant in the summer.

The bedrooms are comfortable and there are plenty of bathrooms etc. The pool and terrace area are great and the garden secluded so although the house is virtually in the centre of town it was actually very quiet. (We were never actually quiet ourselves as we had 4 children with us all the time and for one week 8).

The Gardien responded quickly to any queries and he was a great help, especially as we didn’t all speak good French.

As we come from Australia and old is not really old in terms of buildings we spent much of our time wandering round Pèzenas looking at the fascinating old streets and alleyways. We also loved the bakeries and the delicious baguettes and croissants - the local wine went down very well, too. We felt there was a very friendly atmosphere in the town.

The area is in close proximity to many places of interest so it’s a good hub if you don’t want to just ‘hang out’ in Pèzenas. Car parking is provided on the property for two cars and the public car park at the rear was very safe and there was always space.

We can whole heartedly recommend the house (and Pèzenas) it was a most enjoyable place in which to spend 4 weeks – in fact we were sad to leave.

Owner's Response: We were delighted to get such a useful set of comments, and of course being Australians, they are used to a high standard of living, and indeed high temperatures too (most of us find it lovely and warm in September, but for this group, it seems that was not quite the case). Anyhow, our guests were there for a month, and clearly enjoyed every minute of their stay, which is what it's all about as far as we are concerned, and as we make improvements every year on this property, it can only get better and better.

Ah! Remembering This Time Last Year....

  • 5 of 5

As I am about to embark on this year's late spring break I am prompted to remember my similar, superb, break last year. Based at this fantastic house, right in the centre of Pezenas, I found so much too hand and yet the house and garden were quiet and private enough to feel we had really 'got away'. Needless to say the children enjoyed all the ammenities and had plenty of space to play - as quietly or as loudly as they wished..!

Though the owners had left ample information on places to go and things to do we did find ourselves calling them to ask about where we could get an extra car seat. It was quickly obvious that they were very helpful and made it clear that we shouldn't hesitate to call them should we require any further information-on anything. Very helpful. Unlike some places I could mention the photographs are a true representation of what you will find, an excellent standard of furnishings and plants that are actually growing not dying ! Excellent Value. We found ourselves as very welcomed 'guests' in someones home rather than just a cold let. A great time was had by all. This year we are in Portugal for May but I know we will be back to Pezenas and this house very soon...there is so much more to explore and (not) do...! PS Our daughter is profoundly deaf - hence why I am happy to check the disability box...we didn't bring any pets so don't know about suitability for pets..!

Owner's Response: Well, I prompted these people for a review because I knew - or thought I knew at least - that they were very happy with house and location. And clearly, if we have a guest who is not happy, we won't be asking them for a review, so....Guess that's how it works though (you can see that I am thinking from the guest's point of view here, but we are consumers too after all). As for pets. We refused a lady with 5 dogs last year, but it depends what you have....

Fine Country Home In Elegant Surroundings

  • 5 of 5

Obviously this house is pretty special, but we found the location was a huge plus as well - just so much to see and do within a stones throw, and also good advice on where else to go in the info sheets, maps on wall etc. The lower garden was a favourite with the adults and it was very helpful to have the pool just outside the main summer kitchen so we could see the kids all the time. Loads of free exotic fruits to eat as well. A few small problems were immediately sorted out by the gardien, who was a major help in unloading/loading our car etc. We are already planning to return there.

Owner's Response: Yes, a lot of our guests find that our 'location is a huge plus'. So many house rentals are out in the styx, which seems romantic, but when you have to get in the car and drive to get a baguette and croissants every morning.... We have at least 4 wonderful bakeries and patisseries within easy walking distance, and send the children every morning. And just everything else is so near that we only use the car for the daytrips. We even walk out to the brasseries for lunch - some offer very good deals, and are just a minute away - which is just too easy and tempting to ignore. Actually, Pezenas is much more romantic and attractive than most villages anyway - Just check out my photo gallery on the Picasa website (which we will give you if you email us).

Nearest Beach
14 Miles
Meze, easy to get to even in High Summer
Car: recommended

Beziers Airport (called Vias) We now have a shuttle bus (v cheap) from the Ryanair Bezier airport that goes to Agde and Beziers to get a hire car or bus to Pezenas. Timed to the flights too. So really no car get here, and particularly, when you are actually staying here.

Otherwise, our nearest airport is Montpellier: a 40 minute and 70 euro taxi drive from Pezenas. We are an hour from the walled city of Carcassonne, and only 35 minutes to wild flamingoes, 20 minutes to Meze beach, with its seahorses and fishing harbour, 40 minutes to Heric Gorge. Your house is right in the centre of Pezenas. Other major attractions within easy reach are Sete and Agde on the coast, with their beaches and harbours, and the local Dinosaur park as well as water parks, aquariums and seaside amusements. There is a huge amount to see and do within very easy reach, and the tourist office of Pezenas is 2 mins walk away....

Other Activities: Great shopping, especially for presents and clothes.

Golf: Various good courses nearby

The job of the housekeeper, who lives out, is to clean the pool at least once a week. You have an allowance of 20 Kwatt hours per week included in the rent, and thereafter it costs 0.3 euro per Kwatt hour. Gas has no allowance, and is the same price. The logic is not to make money, but to save energy. For example our chandelier has about 30 bulbs and this discourages guests from leaving it on all night....
