We aim to provide a very high standard of country living and comfort with traditional architecture and modern facilities. Monte da Quinta sets a high standard and has been approved and officially licensed by the Ministry of Tourism of Portugal, Classification CASA de CAMPO No. 1/2006

This unique retreat comprises of two country houses which are beautifully furnished to a high standard, set in 5 hectares of private estate land. A large natural salt water swimming pool and children’s play pool (no chlorine or chemicals). Just on the edge of Castro Verde we have the advantage of the tranquillity and beauty of this fantastic landscape, plus all the facilities of the town.

Within 10 minutes walking, or 2 minutes in the car, we have several excellent RESTAURANTS, CAFES, SHOPS and SUPERMARKETS, Festivals and Markets throughout the year.

Eating out locally is extremely good value for money. Typically a two course lunch time “meal of the day” “Prato da Dia” including: bread, olives, a beverage and coffee costs 7.50 euros per person. A two course evening meal including: bread, olives, a good bottle of wine and coffee, costs between 40 – 50 euros for two persons. A coffee or tea and locally made pastry from one of our many coffee shops costs just 2 euros.

Located within 45 minutes easy reach of the West coast and the Algarve.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES:

Working with a preferred partner we are able to offer the following outdoor activities at a very special rate. Monte da Quinta will handle the booking for you and make all the necessary arrangements.

VINEYARD TOURS (lunch optional), QUAD BIKING, HOT AIR BALLOONING, ARCHERY, HORSE RIDING.

Various activities are available from Monday to Friday throughout the year. Please consider the Alentejo climate, some may be more appropriate than others depending on the time of year.

BIRD WATCHING PARADISE the perfect location for twitchers, our guests have listed some of the birds spotted at Monte da Quinta on within 10 kilometres such as: Lesser Kestrel, Red and Black Kite, Great and Little Bustard, Black Bellied Sandgrove, Corn Bunting, Eagles, Bee Eater, Egret, Storks, Marsh Harrier, Montago Harrier, Cuckoo, Strikes. resident Little Owls and we have a Nightingale for several weeks of the year.

REST ASSURED: Our farmhouses are maintained to a very high standard of cleanliness and are inspected on a weekly basis. Our holiday houses were restored to strict guidelines set by the Ministry of Tourism Portugal. These include: mains drainage, mains electric, solar water heaters, no gas appliances and our pool water is regularly tested.

All rooms have smoke alarms these are connected to a central alarm system. Fire panic buttons and emergency exit signs. Kitchens are fitted with extinguishers and fire blankets. As a registered business we are licensed operators for Rural Tourism and insured for public liability. We provide a basic first aid kit in each house and we are regularly inspected for health and safety. The house is furnished to a high and comfortable standard. It has a large comfortable lounge and dining area complete with Wi-Fi, flat screen TV, satellite channels, DVD player, and a iPod speaker dock. A selection of DVD's, books and board games. A well equipped kitchen also provides granite worktops, a hob, oven, microwave, large fridge/freezer, dishwasher, kettle, electric juicer, toaster, an iron and ironing board.

Both bedrooms have en suite facilities, walk-in shower or bath, WC, hand basin and bidet. Both bedrooms have double doors onto their own private terrace.A door from the kitchen opens onto an alternate private breakfast terrace. Large doors open from the lounge onto a private covered dining terrace, with southerly views for miles over the un-spoilt plains. For extra comfort this house has under floor heating included during low season. It is single storey and has traditional terracotta floors throughout with wooden shuttered windows and high vaulted beamed ceilings.

About Michaela Tulip-Mills

Having bought Monte da Quinta in the summer of 2002 with the intention of it becoming our holiday retreat, we found it increasingly hard to return from visits to the hustle and bustle of the UK. With much planning and determination, finally in the summer of 2005, we moved to Portugal.

Why Michaela Tulip-Mills chose Beja region

Project managing the build and restoration of the farmhouses, we took inspiration from some of the fantastic accommodation we had stayed at within Europe. With our love for all things rustic, traditional and the ambience of the Casa de Campo “House of the Country” life style, Monte da Quinta started to evolve.

We wanted to maintain the traditions and farming practises that had taken place at Monte da Quinta for many generations. With little knowledge of our own, we enlisted the help of a former employee of the farm. Despite our initial lack of the Portuguese language, his patience with us and dedication to the land and the animals has helped us to keep farm blooming.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Monte da Quinta combines modern facilities and traditional architecture with an even balance between rural tourism, farming and a unique way of life. Centrally located within the lower Alentejo region with easier access to the Algarve and the western coast line.

With our continuing success, we have settled into the landscape and lives of the local people very nicely. Thanks to the fantastic support and recommendations from many of our returning guests, we now have a viable business with visitors from all over the world.

Birdwatching in Alentejan Paradise

This is the most beautiful and immaculately kept property we stay at in Portugal. We stayed twice this year, and try to visit every year. Michaela and Nigel are excellent hosts, and the cottage has everything you need. We walked to local restaurants and cafes, and recommend the new café next to the Turismo, where the owner is very welcoming, and speaks excellent English. Our favourite restaurants are Villa Italia and Market Verde. Although the birdwatching was better in April, we still managed to spot a good variety. Hope to return soon.

5 Star Accommodation

This 5 Star Villa was all we expected and wanted. It was spotlessly clean, very spacious and had everything we could want in self-catering accommodation. Michaela goes to great length with the detail to make people feel welcome, including a welcome pack. We asked for her to provide a Portuguese meal for us on the first night which was well presented and very tasteful. There was far more than we could eat so leftovers were eaten for lunch the following day! The kitchen was well equipped, as was the pool area, including a hammock for each villa! The views were stunning so sitting on the terrace of our villa drinking coffee enjoying the view was a must. We also particularly liked feeding the animals which included hens, pigs, a duck, goats and ponies. I'm sure they gained weight whilst we were there! We visited two of the many restaurants and cafes in town, both of which provided excellent meals. This is a villa we would love to stay at again. If you are not looking for a beach close by but just wish to enjoy a relaxing, comfortable villa with pools appropriate for adults and children this is the place to stay.

Tranquil luxurious cottage

Having stayed at another Alentejo holiday property the previous week that did not live up to the expectations set in the marketing material, it was a relief to arrive and find everything is the same high quality at Monte da Quinta.

My family has been holidaying at Monte da Quinta for 10 years. We like the fact the property is clean, smells wonderful, is well maintained and immaculate, well stocked and offers lots of little extras. Highly recommend this property to our friends and family.

A very beautiful and relaxing place to stay

A very beautiful place to stay - the house was spotlessly clean, very comfortable ,spacious and everything you could possibly want was there.

The views from the terrace over the gardens, pool and unspoilt countryside were amazing and the endless blue skies were just perfect.

Nigel and Michaela were very warm, welcoming, helpful, generous and not intrusive all at the same time. The welcome pack, fresh vegetables from the garden and savoury supper (delicious) were all very generous.

It was a very unspoilt relaxed area with everything you need in nearby Castro Verde - great cafes and restaurants and a good supermarket.

We had an excellent holiday, the right mix of relaxing in and around the pool and getting out and about to explore Portugal. We hope to go back to Monte da Quinta very soon.

Oasis in Alentejo

Monte da Quinta is an oasis in Alentejo. Located within easy walking distance from Castro Verde, a nice small town with good restaurants, it overlooks the beautiful landscape. Everything is fully renovated and extremely well kept. We lived in Casa Oliveira - it is spacious and was perfect for a family of four. Michaela and Nigel are excellent hosts, dropping by from time to time with fresh vegetables from their own garden, fresh towels and knowledge about the area.

Birdwatching in Alentejan Paradise

This was our 5th stay at Oliveira, and we enjoyed it so much we've just booked to return again. The cottages are kept in immaculate condition by Michaela and Nigel who are also excellent hosts. There's plenty of information provided about local restaurants, and because of the excellent location of Oliveira you can walk to the restaurants. Our favourites were Villa Italia and Market Verde. The edge of town location means the views from the veranda are over the beautiful countryside, and we saw hoopoes, storks, booted eagles and red kites while sitting there, and heard nightingales. Out in the cereal steppes the birds are amazing. Our favourite sightings were of great and little bustards and lesser kestrels.

Local activities include: vineyard tours, wine tasting and dinner, jeep safaris, motor quading and spa days. Stepped in history it is possible to visit historic towns and sites such as Lisbon, Evora, Mertola and Marvao

Delicious traditional cuisine with fantastic regional wines at incredibly low prices. We will recommend local restaurants and all importantly those that you can walk to.
