Quirky and full of history, charm and character
Hi, my name is Ian and I have been a frequent Barmouth visitor for 9 years. Myself, my partner Becky and my three teenage daughters love the place! We can walk the mountains and ridges, enjoy the white water or relax with kayaks on the lake in the immediate area. The beach needs no selling but if I can say one thing there is a cafe with a balcony over the sand and they do a great G&T.
Ian purchased this House in 2017
Why Ian chose Barmouth
This property is part of the heritage and history of Barmouth. It’s one of the oldest vanacular properties in the UK. People stop and take photos and you often get a smile or a wave as you enter. It’s 600 years old and stands out from the Victorian townhouses and flats. The fisherman that built this didn’t worry about the sea views. They built it end on to the sea to protect it from the weather. The coast line was different and it was nearer the shore then. Look out for the slate sink that serves as a window sill. The fisherman would work on their catch and throw the unwanted remnants straight out of the window. The property has charm and character but we have to acknowledge its limits in this modern age. Parking is difficult during the day and we use the car parks. The windows and floor are not as sound proof as we would like during the day so noise comes up from the shop below. While we are open about its weaknesses we love the place. It’s the absolute centre of the town where the mountains meet the sea.
What makes this House unique
The very centre of town. You won’t find an older or more characteristic house in Barmouth. Come and be part of the history

Everything perfect exept there no soap and we received 3 towels for 5 people, so needed to buy 😀😀😀. Dificuilt for tall people 😀. Nice experienc any way. Thank you
A good central place, all within walking distance, we had a lovely stay , sorry the guttering needs sorting. Could be health and safety issue? Jayne
Thankyou. Very much for taking the time to review. You are absolutely correct that the guttering could do with an upgrade. Of course being a listed building this does take some time and authorisation from local authorities. It is functional and secure but we appreciate that it looks a little untidy. I was tempted to call it quirky but completely agree with you and it is a priority for us. Thanks again for choosing Penygrisiau and taking the time time to feed back. Really appreciated!
half term hoidays
we all had a fabulous time the property is so quaint and cosy
Great much needed break
This is our second time at the cottage and the addition of the en suite was a welcome change given our boys have grown up a bit more, it gave them the privacy they need (they like that and having wifi!). Good location for eating, drinking, shops, walking and the beach. We went to Coed-y-brenin one day trail biking which was fantastic and recommended. My son also went in the sea - at the end of October (we kept our gloves on while we watched!) !!
Cottage has all we needed, and host Ian was in touch right up to our stay which was reassuring. (One tiny thing - the symbols on the oven have worn off, can instructions be left ?)
(Also my apologies, I left items in the fridge - really sorry - always try to leave as I'd like to find it)
Thank you - will be back!
Stayed at the cottage with family and was so pleased we chose this one! It is a wonderful cottage, well equipped and very clean. The beds were comfortable and the furnishings were of a very high standard. It didn't feel like a general holiday cottage but nore like a home from home. Barmouth itself was so much more than we expected with friendly locals and everything that you would need. Ian was really helpful and communication with him was exceptional Despite the weather, it's a wonderful spot for exploring north Wales and we are already planning our next trip with hopefully a little bit of sun thrown in! Whether it rains or not, do not be put off from exploring this great part of Wales and staying in a little piece of history. Thank you so much!
Thankyou so much for taking the time to review. We really appreciate your comments and are very happy you felt so much at home!
Ian & Becky.
Lovely stay despite the weather
Overall the property was very clean and comfortable, great sofas and beds, I mean really comfortable.
There was everything in the kitchen and the WiFi was great, the tv picture was really good as well.
The situation of the place was great easy access to all of Barmouth, though no parking was a bit of a downside. There were a few small omissions which were no toilet rolls and very little hand liquid, and the toilet seats needed attention, but these were minor issues and overall the stay was really enjoyable.
