About Virginia Henry Martins
I have been living in Portugal for almost 20 years and am a mother of three. We live in the farmhouse next to the Pool House. I love living in Portugal because of the climate, the food, wine, and the landscape and architecture here is beautiful. We have 3 children, a boy of 15 and two girls of 13 and 12. I'm always looking for new projects - last year I converted the old wine house into a Party/Pilates/TV room. This year I converted a large water tank into a pretty tiled swimming pool (6m x 6m). It is surrounded by kiwis and has a lovely view. My plan is to keep it for the family and when I occasionally rent out my ground floor apartment - the guests from the apartment can use the top tank. I love walking and am happy to take guests for little walks up the mountain. There are about 10 different paths I know well - so I can vary. My plan is not to gallop at break -neck speed, but to amble along and enjoy the views. These walks only really happen in the cooler months of the year - in the summer it's too hot - for the dogs as well as for the owner and guests!!
Virginia Henry Martins purchased this house in 2000
Why Virginia Henry Martins chose Guimarães
We're in between Braga and Guimarães, so well located. The view is amazing. The pool is salt-water, tiled blue and illuminated at night - giving a stunning effect. There are many scenic walks around, right behind the house (leading to Sameiro and Bom Jesus, if you have the time). Taipas is 5 minutes away and has everything - including 3 supermarkets and about 20 cafes. We like to feel we're in the country but near the city. We have 2 dogs and they love the walks all around here.
What makes this house unique
Well located, the view, the sounds of nature. The Pool House is just 3 years old and and everything is pretty modern. It has been a labour of love! The bi-fold doors are perfect - closed when cold and totally open when it is hot - they allow the kitchen to be just a kitchen with a little snug at the end and the veranda is large, now serving as a dining/ sitting room, with amazing views. There's a wood burner on the veranda, so you can be sitting in front of the flame, nice and cosy and looking out at the lights of the valley and also the pool, illuminated at night. As the owners live nearby - they are at hand should you need advice or recommendations. You can accompany Virginia for free on her daily dog walks - along woodland paths. She and the dogs enjoy the company. There is a fishmonger who passes the farm every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday so if guests want fresh fish (and there's a huge selection) they can choose their fish and have a BBQ. The baker also comes to the house on a daily basis. He leaves a bag of fresh bread rolls dangling from the gate - so you'll never be short of a selection of bread (and the owners pay for it). There are excellent restaurants all around - for every budget, from very reasonable to the other extreme. Virginia provides guests with a list of her favourite restaurants and how to find them. A neighbour has a taxi and is happy to drive guests to and from restaurants - to give the driver a rest and allow everyone to sample Portugal's excellent wines. This part of Portugal is not just scenic but oozes history -with Roman towns such as Braga, Guimarães, Ponte de Lima and white sandy beaches at Esposende, Fão, Apúlia and Ofir (which has 2 surf schools for all ages and levels)- not to mention Porto itself which has a fine coastline, and cafes on the beach. Whether it's a healthy break you're after or a relaxing holiday in beautiful surroundings, this place won't disappoint!
