About this property

Nature Sabbatical ~ Lovely cabin with View of Feather River on 40 Acres

Reserve your Nature Sabbatical! This vintage and charming cabin on the Feather River is the perfect place to unplug from the craziness of the world and reconnect with yourself, your loved ones, and the life you were meant to live. Science now confirms what the "Ancients" have always known, time in nature is essential to our health and well being. Take a break from screens and devices as part of your renewal time. Wander our many trails which offer both seclusion and stunning views.

This delightful cabin was built in the 1920’s and has a peaceful nostalgic ambiance; truly a taste of a bygone era! We have named this cabin "Mt. Washington" after one of the local peaks, and is one of a cluster of five cabins that were part of the Penman Peak Lumber Company established in 1925, which was a small working lumber mill until the mid 1940’s.

The cabins are part of University of Earth and the Lost Sierra Retreat Center. All the cabins are within walking distance of the National Wild and Scenic Middle Fork of the Feather River, which winds through our 40 acres. Stellar views of the Feather River, along with Sierra sunsets and moonlit nights, can be seen from the private back deck and riverside bedroom, along with many wonderful places to view the mountain peaks, Feather River and the local wildlife.

Located along scenic Highway 70, the Retreat Center and land is surrounded by U.S. Forest Service land and to add a nostalgic reminder of our industrial age in transition, and to the delight of many of our guests, the Western Pacific railway snakes along the river the length of the property.

Wander our many trails which offer both seclusion and stunning views. Swim in the healing waters of the "Medicine River." Our enchanting riverside sitting areas and hammocks make our retreat center just what the doctor ordered.

Our Nature Sabbaticals offer a unique opportunity in a truly magical setting for our guests to unplug and let nature become the healer and teacher. If you can, our suggested stay is three nights or longer in order to truly allow nature to have its way with you. For those so inclined, each of the cabins have suggested nature immersion activities and ecotherapy practices scientifically validated to promote healing, wholeness and enhanced creativity. Examples are walking barefoot on the delightful riverside sands and enjoying the health benefits of grounding while forest bathing.

Make this your base for exploring the Lakes Basin Recreation Area, Plumas Eureka State Park, and the surrounding areas. The Lost Sierra is a wonderland for hiking, swimming, and personal retreat.

The Lost Sierra Retreat Center offers indoor lodging for up to 30 in our charming and delightfully appointed historic cabins. Our two "Glamping" Yurts provide additional indoor lodging for up to 4. Our serene riverside primitive campsites offer an opportunity for deep nature connection and privacy. Host your workshop here!

Guests have access to most of the 40 acres, river sites and common areas. The river sites have Adirondack chairs and hammocks, and one site has a firepit (used as season/fire restrictions allow). The river may be accessed by an intermediate trail from the cabin area, or by unpaved road (seasonally).

University of Earth is a "Sanctuary of Sobriety" and intoxicants of any kind are not allowed on the land. At the Lost Sierra Retreat Center nature is the intoxicant, come drink in the "moonshine." Leave the cannabis, psychedelics and alcohol spirits at home. Come imbibe on the Spirits of Nature, you will be amazed at the clarity this can offer.

Kristin, also known as the Therapeutic Chef, is available for hire to prepare your meals for you so you can focus more of your energy on your healing, resting and nature bathing. In the summer and fall, Kristin uses fresh vegetables from the organic garden on site to provide inspiration for creating nourishing, vegetarian and vegan meals for guests. Kristin has had a personal chef business since 2005 and wrote a cookbook called Therapeutic Chef: Recipes to prevent cancer, heart disease and diabetes. After reserving, we can provide you with her contact information if this is something you would like to add on to your Nature Sabbatical.

There can be an occasional train; there is no set schedule. Most guests enjoy it!

We have a "No Shoe" rule at the cabins. So, rock your sox - or slippers!!

We live full time on the property, along with our staff, so we are usually available during your stay to answer any questions and guide you to enjoying the property and Plumas County/Graeagle area.

Also to Note: Cell service can be spotty at our rural mountain location. High Speed internet, if needed, is just a short drive away.

Incredible location!
Our third visit to this comfortable historic cabin. Gorgeous views of the Feather River, and Railroad. Steep, but easy, short hike to picturesque River. Clean, quiet, & close to multiple activities! We will be back! Hosts are great. Cabin is well equipped. Even with a fan in each room, but cabin can be hard to cool down after hot days. A compact air conditioner would be a great addition!!!

The Silver Family lived in the Tahoe Truckee area for 26 years. In 2012 we acquired 40 acres in Plumas County, located near Graeagle, California on the National Wild and Scenic Feather River. The Graeagle area was our first home as a young married couple in 1979. We moved back full time in August of 2013. It's great to be back! Rich is a retired CA state park ranger, with one of our first assignments as newlyweds being Plumas-Eureka State Park in Johnsville, which is how we discovered this beautiful area. I worked as a paralegal in the Truckee area for 23 years. We have raised our family of four sons in the outdoors, and we continue to make nature and beautiful landscapes a priority in our lives. We have reserved four of the several 1920's vintage cabins, which were once part of the Penman Peak Lumber Company, as vacation rentals and a unique space for workshops, gatherings, etc. It is a beautiful spot, and we look forward to sharing it with you!

Why they chose this property

We love this property! Sitting by the Feather River is truly magical. There is an abundance of wildlife in residence, and views of Mt. Elwell, Mt. Washington, and Eureka Peak can be seen from a few vantage points on the property. The cabins we have reserved for our guests have a nostalgic, old-time ambiance. Kick back and relax. Your hammock is calling...........

What makes this property unique

The property and cabin are the ideal space to unplug from a busy city life. We recommend kicking back and taking in the sounds of nature, the river, and doing absolutely nothing but sitting on the back deck or the many sitting spots along the river.
