About this property

17th Century Cottage in Pretty Snowdonia Market Town

Sitting close to the heart of Dolgellau, with its pretty stone cottages and surrounded by mountains and rivers, this characterful cottage has all you need for a great holiday or short break whatever the time of year. Step in through the lounge door and you know that this cottage with its impressive inglenook fireplace has been a pace to stay and relax for many hundreds of years. The massive wooden beam was once part of a sailing ship and later saw people meet under it as a "Friends meeting house". Meyrick Street is an old residential street leading from the centre of this quaint and attractive market town, out past a winding river to the foothills of Cader Idris, South Snowdonia's most impressive mountain.
In and around Dolgellau there is no shortage of things to do and places to go as well as a great choice of venue's to eat and drink only 2 or 3 minutes walk away.
Our cottage Y Gelli (the grove) makes a great base for exploring Snowdonia. The town itself is the point at which several mountain rivers join together on their rocky route to the sea, only 10 miles away at the seaside town of Barmouth. Within a few minutes drive you will find beautiful mountain lakes that are great for fishing, walking and swimming in as well as messing about on in a canoe.
For walkers there is some of the most impressive walking country in Wales incl using Cader Idris, the Rhinog mountains, and the famous Precipice and Torrent walks. Stunning views are everywhere from the tops of mountains out to sea or along the beautiful Dovey and Mawddach estuaries and plenty of impressive waterfalls too.
You can bring your bikes to the cottage and store them in our garage or hire them locally then go out and explore the traffic free routes such as the Mawddach Trail as it winds to the sea alongside the Mawddach River or take your mountain bike to Coed y Brenin the National Mountain Biking centre with routes to suit all abilities.
If you want to relax by the sea or just paddle in the waves there are great beaches on the coast from Barmouth up to Harlech and its historic castle. Or you can visit the pretty welsh harbour town of Aberdovey. It is all within half an hours drive and waiting here for you to come and discover it.
Best of all you can do plenty from the cottage without the need for a car. Dolgellau has great transport links across North and mid Wales via the Traws Cymru (Cross Wales) network and on Saturday and Sunday these buses connecting you to Barmouth, Caernarfon, Aberystwyth, Bala and Llangollen are totally free for you and the whole family. They all give good connections to the national rail newtork at Barmouth and Machynlleth

A great stay
We had a wonderful time in Dolgellau. Everything you might need - shopping, restaurants and pubs - was in easy walking distance. And even the hiking - our main reason for being there - could be started immediately at the doorstep, but of course there are lots of places to drive to for starting really great tours. The house itself is a beauty - it may be 400 years old, but all facilities (kitchen, bathroom) are up to date and in top condition. We would come back any time!

Anne and I live not far away in Barmouth and have lived in this area since 2013. We first discovered Dolgellau when we were cycling from Anglesey to Cardiff and stopped over night to camp here. We know the mountains around the area especially Cadair Idris and we hope that you will get to know this special pretty little town with its exceptional mountains rivers and lakes on the doorstep.

Why they chose this property

We first discovered Dolgellau when we were cycling from Anglesey to Cardiff and stopped over night to camp here. We know the mountains around the area especially Cadair Idris and we hope that you will get to know this special pretty little town with its exceptional mountains rivers and lakes on the doorstep. We think the Y Gelli (which means the Grove, will provide a fantastic base from which you can explore. It is a cozy cottage full of history and charm and it has everything you need right on the doorstep

What makes this property unique

There are not many places you can stay that boast an ingle nook fireplace that is almost a room on its own, an old beam from a sailing ship a history going back to the early 1600s, was once a place of worship , later was a "Dole" office, and now is the prettiest little place to stay.
