Beautifully presented 17th century town house in great central location
This property is excellent, beautifully presented and various individual furnishings throughout. Located close to town centre (3 min walk) and 2 mins from square where there is a good selection of bars and restaurants.
Set over 3 floors the three bedrooms are very good size, and 2 have superb wet rooms. Lounge and dining area are excellent with TV HI -Fi etc. Kitchen is well appointed but not spacious. However we managed to prepare and cook without any problems. Superb courtyard which does get very hot but a real sun trap. The location could not be better, 5 min walk to Saumur Chateaux and definitely worth a visit (or two) with fantastic views of Saumur and the Loire. You will be spoilt for choice for eating out options - too many to mention but try 1929 for something different and Keatings Steak House. This was the first time we had undertaken a town location as distinct from a gite or hill top house. It won't be the last.
One issue is the stone staircase, if you are slightly infirm they would I suspect be a toil!
Thank you Elisabeth for a great holiday property and the lovely town of Saumur.
Wonderful house in the heart of Saumur
We have just spent a wonderful week in Elisabeth's house in Saumur and we can't recommend it highly enough.
The property was close to the centre with its restaurants and shops, very clean, lots of space. The courtyard was a lovely sheltered spot for relaxing, the property was airy and light with an amazing stone staircase and spacious bedrooms.
Elisabeth was a perfect host, friendly and helpful. We have enjoyed a fabulous week here.
Thank you for your kind comments.
It is a real pleasure for me that you have had a nice stay at home.
You have been perfect guests
I wish to see you again at home and the best for you and your family.
Best regards Elisabeth
The best for you and your family
From the outside there is no hint of what an oasis lies inside. The house is perfectly appointed, beautifully decorated, and completely functional. The outside area is a perfect place to dine when it is not too hot (which it was for a few days when we were there). Madame Mauret was very helpful, and explained everything we needed to know. When the power went out overnight she came out at 6am to check into the problem.
We thoroughly enjoyed the stay here, and highly recommend it.
Merci pour votre gentil commentaire.
Je suis heureuse que la maison vous ait plu.
Vous avez été des hôtes très agréables également et j'espère vous revoir très bientôt.
Unique and charming, like being in your own "mini- chateau" complete with turret
Located in the heart of Saumur, a few minutes walk from the main square, numerous restaurants and (including a good sized Carrefour supermarket), and the river. The parking is about a 10 minutes walk from the house, in a public parking garage with a reserved space in a separately locked area.
The house is tastefully furnished with an eclectic mixture of modern art and antique furniture, stone floors and high, beamed ceilings. The bathrooms are all completely remodeled, with plush towels and a large hairdryer in two of the three bathrooms (note: the countertops are high, so if you're short, you may find yourself stretching a bit to use the sink). The house is south-facing, so it's filled with natural light much of the day.
The courtyard is private and is a pleasant spot if you want to eat outside or sip an aperitif. Having a separate laundry room, with a good-sized freezer, was a treat (we stocked up on frozen food from Picard, and did a few loads of laundry and some ironing).
The kitchen is small but well-equipped, with various pots and pans, and a nice large selection of crockery and linens. Since it's narrow and there is limited counter space, it's not really a space for "serious" cooking but it suited our needs (simple dishes on the stovetop or in the microwave, though microwave-safe dishes would have been useful).
A word about the spiral stone staircase. While it's quaint, it is surprisingly tiring to go up and down even one floor, due to the step height and high ceilings, and the hardness of the stone. We noticed this within the first day, whenever we used the bathroom on the 1st floor (2nd floor, American system). (Note: no ground floor toilet.)
Saumur itself is well-situated for visiting various sites in the Loire Valley. During our week's stay, we drove to L'Abbaye de Fontevrault (just over
an hour), the spectacular gardens at Chateau Villandry (45 minutes), and bustling Angers (45 minutes).
Lastly, a note about the only thing that did disrupt our stay - on a couple of days we heard very loud music from one of the apartments next door, including late at night. The house shares a common wall. Elisabeth, the owner, was very responsive when we notified her, and was in touch with both the tenant, and subsequently the property management company (when it continued a second night). We didn't have any significant recurrence for the rest of our stay.
All in all, a very pleasant stay in a charming home, with a warm and solicitous hostess.
I wanted to thank you for your appreciation which you writted on the website.
You were very couteous and very nice hosts.
Your remarqs were sound.
I added a series of dishes from the microwave in addition to the cover.
The musical neighbourhood concern is now happily resolved thanks to the involvement of everyone.
I wanted to thank you for your understanding.
I appreciate your feelings.
Saumur and the Loire surroundings are rich in discoveries, its mild climate make it an unvoidable place indeed.
Amazing accomodation in the heart of Saumur
Stay here and feel like you are stepping back in time. The winding stone staircase, gorgeous rafters in the top floor bedroom and lovely courtyard give this place a timeless appeal. We were two couples traveling together and found this place to be perfect accomodations. The bedrooms were spacious and comfortable, the living room area provided comfortable seating to unwind after a day of sightseeing and enjoy some of the wonderful local wines. The kitchen was small but modern and well equipped. We were able to cook and set a beautiful table with all of the serving pieces Elizabeth keeps stocked. The parking area was a short walk away and very secure.
Saumur makes a good base for exploring the Loire valley and has several great restaurants within a very short walk of this property. We especially enjoyed Auberge saint Pierre and Les Menestrels. There is also a nice Saturday market with locally grown mushrooms and cheeses among other delicious items. The property is an easy drive to many of the valley's beautiful chateaus and Fontevraud Abbey.
We want to thank Elizabeth for being very welcoming and making us feel like we were at home. We would certainly love to stay here again, especially in warmer weather to enjoy the lovely courtyard.
Un grand merci pour votre magnifique commentaire et je serai vraiment très heureuse de vous revoir une prochaine fois à Saumur aux beaux jours.
Excellent in every way!
