About this property

Fishermen Beach Lovers Snowbirds Unique Bon Secour River Cabin, Pet Friendly!

The Fish Camp cabin is located on the Bon Secour River. The Bon Secour river has historically been a "working" river for shrimp boats and fishermen. Commercial shrimp boats ply the river and use Bon Secour as a base from which they travel all the Gulf of Mexico. The name "Bon Secour" was given the river by French sailing crews who found the river to be a safe haven from storms. The very name means "good anchorage" and "safe harbor." During the Civil War the South used the waters of the river to obtain salt and for years the remnants of the salt pits could still be seen. The Union army recognized the importance of the salt production and mounted a specific attack to destroy the pits. An example of a Southern mansion, "The Swift Cole House " is located within one mile of the fish camp and is available for touring.

The property includes a long dock on the river with two covered sitting areas. Boat dockage is available for guests. A boat launch is at the end of the street. The cabin is part of an original fish camp, consisting of ten cabins. The Fish Camp cabin was believed to be the owner/manager's cabin as it consisted of two bedrooms where the other original cabins were efficiencies. The Fish Camp cabin has been renovated with all the amenities, but keeps it's original, rustic character. The cabin has beamed ceilings and heart pine floors. The cabin has a living, kitchen, and dining area combination. The cabin also has a charming fireplace updated with gas logs. The wooden furniture was made locally by a Bon Secour craftsman. There are two bedrooms with a hallway and bathroom separating the bedrooms. The kitchen is completely furnished for cooking your favorite seafood recipe. New refrigerator, gas stove, microwave and dishwasher are available for guest's use. The kitchen has new granite countertops. A storage building next to the cabin contains a clothes washer and dryer. Designated parking is available next to the cabin.

The fish camp's spectacular 150 year old liveoak tree overlooks the river and dock and there is a swing for use by guests. Within walking distance of the cabin are two fish houses where fish and shrimp are unloaded directly from the boats. Fresh caught gulf shrimp are always available and fresh fish include speckled trout, flounder, grouper, red fish, mullet and many other species. World famous Bon Secour oysters are always available.

There is a front screened porch with river views. Guests can see shrimp boats traveling up and down the river. Dolphins can frequently be observed swimming in the river. The area is excellent for fishing right from the dock for speckled trout, redfish or flounder. Guests will have access to a crab trap, to try your hand at catching blue crabs. If you don't catch your dinner, there is an excellent restaurant close by, the Tin Top. You can't go wrong with anything ordered there.

The location is also perfect for those wanting beach access, but a more private, quaint setting. Beautiful Gulf Shores beaches and all the beach attractions are close by. The State Park Facilities provide beautiful beach areas, and a long fishing pier. Bon Secour Wildlife Refuge has hiking trails and beaches. Fort Morgan is a historic site and also has public beaches. Designated bird watching sites are throughout this area.

The Bon Secour Fish Camp is perfect for those wanting a unique beach and/or fishing experience without the hassle of beach crowds. The Fish Camp is a little "off the beaten path". Perfect for a week end getaway or longer term rental. Come and enjoy!

Peaceful getaway
We enjoyed our stay at the cabin. We caught many fish and even a stingray! The cabin was clean and comfortable and Linda was available to answer any questions i had. Also, this cabin only has 2 steps to go in and out. All of the other cabins have several steps so if you have bad knees this is a huge bonus!

Hello, We are Gil and Linda. Please let us introduce ourselves and invite you to enjoy our Fish Camp cabin as we have over the years. We are both Alabama natives. We have been coming to Bon Secour since 1988 and have loved the laid back fishing community. It has been home port for our sailboats in the past. It has also been home port for a variety of small fishing boats. We have enjoyed setting mullet nets and sunset cruises up the river. We are currently boating and fishing in Salty, a New England lobster boat. We both enjoy paddling kayaks. Both Gil and Linda are MSW social workers and are mostly retired, leaving even more time to be enjoying the fishing and boating!

Why they chose this property

We purchased our first cabin in the Bon Secour Fish Camp in 1986 to have a boat dock for our sailboat. We quickly came to love the shrimping work environment and the fishing and the local people we met that lived off the shrimping industry. This has been our base and second home for many years for sailing and fishing. We have enjoyed cruising up the river and sunset cruises into Mobile Bay. We have had family, friends and loved ones enjoy many memories of vacations here; setting the mullet net, gumbo cook-offs, going to the "Ice Box". We would love to share this unique setting with you on your vacation.

What makes this property unique

A quiet and unique community located on the historic Bon Secour river. Removed from the bustle of beach life but close enough to go if you wish. Wonderful opportunity to catch your own seafood, or buy from local fish houses or just relax and enjoy the shrimp boats go by.
