About the property

Special Offers for the few remaining weeks in June through October 2018

This five-bedroom villa was custom-built to provide spectacular panoramic views from both the wrap-around terrace and the large private pool in the garden. The unobstructed views from terraces go beyond the sandy local beach and rocky headlands of the coast, across the Bay of Ajaccio towards the majestic mountains that dominate the center of Corsica. Comfortably furnished and well-equipped, the villa’s Terrace Level has cathedral-ceiling living area and master bedroom suite that open onto covered and uncovered terraces. On the Garden Level below are the remaining 4 bedrooms that all open onto the garden with a large pool. A great family villa for up to 11 people. It is also well-suited for romantic rendezvous because the terrace level includes master bedroom with a private balcony; so a couple can enjoy living in a very spacious one bedroom. The villa is a 5 minute walk to the sandy beach at Portigliolo. This quiet, beautiful community on the southern tip of the Gulf of Ajaccio offers local tennis, boating and dining; just 17km to its main resort town Porticcio and 35km from Ajaccio Airport.

Unobstructed Panoramic Views: Views from Terrace: Sunsets across the sea to the Isles des Sanguinaire are spectacular. At night the lights of Ajaccio across the bay sparkle like a diamond necklace. Into June, the snowcapped peaks in the center provide an amazing backdrop as you sunbathe on the terrace enjoying windsurfing, sailing and larger boats taking safe harbor in our local cove. Even during peak season the contrasting bluies of the sea and the waves splashing on the rocky headlands just beyond our local sandy beach provide visual entertainment throughout the day.

About Adele Bozza

I am an American who lived in Europe for 20 years until I returned to New England in 2001. In 1989, we purchased land in Portigliolo and built U Castellu in 1991. Now that I live in Boston, MA, USA, I enjoy sharing my wonderful Corsican home with others through rentals. It still remains my family holiday home. I come here twice a year in Late Spring and Early Autumn.

Adele Bozza purchased this villa in 1991

Why Adele Bozza chose Portigliolo

We first visited Corsica in 1988 while living and working in London. I immediately fell in love with the island. During our first 2 weeks here, we searched for a villa to buy but soon realized we want to create OUR PLACE for our family and friends to enjoy. It was built with love for the island by local builders who appreciated that while we were strangers, we wanted a Corsican home; all materials are from the island including the grey-green granite fireplace.

What makes this villa unique

It is our family home, custom built for our vacation enjoyment. It is comfortable home that is well-equipped for adults and children. The views across the Golfe d'Ajaccio are even more spectacular than any photo I have taken. They still take my breath away each time I return. Because I love the island and have lived in England and USA, it offers some items that other French villas might not.

In 2017, I changed my local contact to Carole who is the owner of a local service provider in Portigiolo that looks after vacation homes in Portigliolo and La Castagna. She was highly recommended by neighbors and has already proven in her first year to be invaluable; not only ensuring our home is clean and in excellent condition when guests arrive but also that she is available to welcome them, answer their questions and address their concerns. I still encourage guests to also contact me directly as well -- either by email or telephone (no charge calling from villa's phone) so that I can ensure any matters that need to be addressed are done promptly. It is Carole and my aspiration to have guests enjoy a wonderful vacation and want to return again and again.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Adele,

Thanks once again for a wonderful week and that we could rent your house. It feels like home.

We've all had a great time and enjoyed the local area but the kids as always made a great deal of use of the pool. A real hit.

I hope we get the opportunity to rent your house again ( there are already plans for 2019 being made 😄).

Now we're of to the alps for a few days before we return to Sweden.

Thanks again and we hope you have a lovely summer.

Exceeded our expectations

  • 5 of 5

From the time you open the front door and see right through the main living area to the stunning view you know you have found the perfect home.

Adele, the owner was so easy to correspond with and Carole her house manger was delightful and made us feel we could ask anything and she would make sure it happened.

My husband and I, my son and his young family plus my mother each had our own room and bathroom with room to spare. Turns out the outdoor shower was the biggest hit with the children, and parents were only too happy have them go from the pool to shower at the end of the day for a clean up.

The upper balcony terrace has such a lovely view, whether you are having breakfast or an evening dinner, you never tire of looking out. The pool area is extensive with lots of seating and chaises, where you can choose shade beneath the maples or sun poolside.

It is a short walk to La Barake, a darling small grocery store/bar/ and out door seating area that has fresh bread delivered each day. It is the answer to everything you may need. Madame and her husband Monsieur Marc are congenial and helpful in every way. There are beach restaurants (one within walking distance), beach bars and pizza places, creperies and activities close enough to find easily and far enough away to make you feel you are in a remote, untouched gem of an area.

We fell in love with Corsica and can’t wait to go back. U Castellu was the biggest part of our new found affection for this part of the world. Many thanks to all the wonderful people we met along the way and to Madame Bozza for sharing her lovely home.

A week in Paradise that words cannot describe!

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at Ajaccio Airport, rented a car and made the 40km drive to U Castellu. It was our first time in Corsica and we were surprised how easy it was to get to the villa. We drove along the breathtaking coastline and made a stop about 5 km from U Castellu in a town called Ruppione to pick up some French bread. Much to our surprise, the store we stopped at not only had great bread but also the most delicious beignets and home-made ice cream. We were in heaven! The trip was already a big hit. One more stop to pick up some wine and we were back on the road.

Upon arriving at U Castellu, we immediately fell in love with this beautiful five bedroom villa. As soon as we walked in we were greeted with spectacular panoramic views of the Gulf of Ajaccio and the mountains of Corsica. From the stunning and unobstructed view from the terrace, you can see the local beach (which is a 5 minute walk) and the scenic winding coastline. As we continued our tour of the villa we entered the spacious master bedroom which is located on the top floor and shares the same great views as the terrace. The master also has its own private bath. Down a flight of stairs there were four more good-sized bedrooms - each bedroom has french doors that lead out to the garden and lovely pool. Two good sized baths, and a laundry room complete the bottom floor. Coming back upstairs, we realized just how spacious the living room is with a cozy fireplace and cathedral ceiling. We did not notice this when we first walked in because we were overcome with the views. The kitchen is very functional with all of the amenities you have at home. The biggest complement to the kitchen is the built-in grill on the terrace. We barbequed chicken, fresh fish and steak while we were there and sat out on the terrace in the large eating area for breakfast, lunch and dinner, enjoying the gorgeous views. As we walked outside to stick our feet in the pool we found an outdoor shower that ended up to be a primary source of showering even the though the showers inside were updated and quite attractive.

This villa is handsomely decorated and impeccably clean and lacks nothing. Our only regret was that we had plans to continue our tour of France and could not stay longer. If you are looking for a romantic get-away or a family vacation for 10, U Castellu will not disappoint!

Thank you for a most enjoyable stay.

Beautiful property with a breath-taking view

  • 5 of 5

Six guests from around the U.S. met in Corsica to celebrate a milestone birthday. We cannot wait to go back! We selected U Castellu because of its location and the generous amenities at the villa. The week was spent swimming, shopping for local ingredients for our meals, hiking, walking, talking, and enjoying fine Corsican wines. The sunsets were memorable, and the villa is clean and full of every modern convenience needed to make for a perfect vacation. Our questions were answered by owner Adele prior to our arrival so that our stay was comfortable and inspiring. We ate at several local restaurants and enjoyed fresh seafood every day. I suggest side trips to Bonifacio (ancient walled city) and Bastia, as well as Napolean's home in Ajaccio. The entire island is rich with history and beautiful people who welcomed us.

Owner's Response: We love when U Castellu becomes the temporary home for friends or families to reunite for a special occasion. This guest perfectly described what continues to make our Corsican home so welcoming and memorable for everyone who has the opportunity to stay there. We are looking forward to welcoming returning and new guests in Summer 2018.

Wonderful location for family vacation

  • 5 of 5

This was our fourth vacation at U Castellu and we loved it again. The house is perfect for our two families (3 adults + 6 kids/teenagers). It is within walking distance of a little grocery with wonderful bread and a beach that the kids can hang out on by themselves. About an hour from Ajaccio, it is also close enough to enjoy some of the more extreme sports available in the center of the country (Reves des Cimes has a fantastic ziplining park in Vero and canyoning options). We will definitely be back!

Wonderful vacations!

  • 5 of 5

We were a Group of 9 friends from Norway and France who spent a memorable week in Corsica. The American owner is very well organized and attentionate and the local manager is professional and responsive, although slightly overworked during summer, which is probably unavoidable. It was very clean upon our arrival. We did not find the absence of air condition to be much of a problem. The view from the villa is even better than the photos suggest and the balcony and pool areas are splendid. We enjoyed the proximity of beaches, hiking tours (do not miss the Capu di Muru Tower!) and tennis courts.

Owner's Response: We are always happy to hear that our Corsican home exceeds the expectations of our new guests. We work very hard to be responsive so they enjoy their stay. Carole, our local services manager, works tirelessly to ensure our home is in excellent condition upon arrival and that any questions or problems are addressed as soon as possible. July and August are very popular months for Corsican vacations, so demand for services is high-- I am glad these guests appreciate the service and support we provide locally. U Castellu does not have air-conditioning because we believe one of the benefits of living there is the amazing sea breezes that enter all of the rooms. Of course we recommend on very hot days, the temporary closing of shutters to keep the hot morning sun off of the interior terra-cotta tiles so the rooms remain cooler than the air outside. Victor is correct that there are so many things to do within walking distance of our villa, and that a short drive avails visitors of many more amazing beaches and hiking opportunities. We hope you decide to explore them with U Castellu as your temporary holiday home en Corse.

Beautiful views, lovely pool, large property suitable for families and groups

  • 5 of 5

Charming property that is well stocked and maintained. We enjoyed walking to the beach about 1 block away. Sunsets on the veranda were spectacular while the birdsong woke us in the morning. It was hard to tear ourselves away to go sightseeing.

Owner's Response: In May, we completed several maintenance tasks that improved U Castellu for guests arriving this summer. We also purchased a new washer and dryer. Most importantly, we appointed Carole who lives locally to be available for guests as well as manage our cleaning, pool and garden service providers. Our aim is to ensure our guests are comfortable in our Corsican home that we love and want to return again.

The villa is a 5 minute walk to the sandy beach at Portigliolo. A quiet, beautiful community on the southern tip of the Gulf of Ajaccio (rated the cleanest in Europe) offers year-round dining (excellent Corsican specialties and wood-fired pizza) and tennis. June to mid September, our local beach blossoms into a secluded water recreation spot (sailing, windsurfing, sea kayaking lessons and rentals are readily available.) without the crowds of the main resort town of Porticcio – conveniently just 17km north along the coast.

During thea summer season, a well-stocked local shop provides fresh breads, local produce and other grocery items. Just 5km south along the coast in the village of Aqua Doria, a larger convenience store is open year round. Heading north along the coastal road to Porticcio, there are many opportunities for shopping, dining and watersports at the numerous suberb beaches and hidden coves. The interior of the island and the mountains are easily accessible by car.

Other Activities: tennis, windsurfing, jet skis, sea kayaking, boat rentals, ferry tours, fishing, hiking, cycling.
