Wonderful location, beautiful home!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had the pleasure of staying here for two nights in December and after we were there, we wished we could have stayed for longer! The house is well equipped, comfortable and charming. Our hosts were so friendly and hospitable, we felt like family for our entire stay, Michela and her husband were kind enough to provide us with a welcome wine and delicious homemade local specialties. We were close to the town of Ascoli Piceno, 10 minutes driving distance, so everything we needed was easily accessible, but the house itself is located above the town and the views were amazing.

Thank you again to our hosts for a memorable stay, we hope to return to your lovely home and the beautiful city of Ascoli Piceno!

INCANTEVOLE

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5

The city is located in the southern part of the Marche region and is 28 km from the Adriatic Sea. Its urban center is located at an altitude of 154 m s. lm, in the area of confluence between the river and the river Tronto Castellano, surrounded on three sides by mountains, among which there are the mountains of Ascension, the Colle San Marco and the mountain of flowers. Its territory is surrounded by two protected natural areas: the National Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park to the south and the Sibillini Mountains to the northwest.

The city's origins are shrouded in mystery, but it is pretty sure that there was a human presence from the Stone Age and that the area was already inhabited in the Neolithic period to the Italic peoples. According to an italic tradition mentioned in ancient literature (Strabo, Pliny, Festo) the city was founded by a group of Sabines, who were led by a woodpecker, a bird sacred to Mars, during one of their migrations that ver sacrum. The Sabines would merge with other indigenous peoples, giving rise to the Piceni, Ascoli which became the main center thanks to its location on the Via Salaria, which connected the salt marshes at the mouth of the Tiber to those of the Adriatic coast. In 299 a. C. allied with the Romans against the Etruscans, Gauls and Samnites, and in 269 a. C. Civitas became Foederata in Rome. In 91 a. C. rebelled in Rome together with other Italic people (in particular the Marsi and other peoples of southern Italy) and gave birth to the Social War. In 89 a. C., after a long siege, the Roman general Pompey Strabo conquered the city, slaughtering the leaders of the rebellion and sending into exile of its inhabitants. In 88 a. C. Ascoli was enrolled in the tribe Fabia, and only 80 in. C. was finally granted Roman citizenship to all Italian populations. Julius Caesar in 49 a. C. the designated capital of the region giving it the nickname of Picenum. At the time of Augustus, became the capital of the fifth region Italic, later in the third century. C. was erected in the autonomous province under the name of Picenum Suburcarium. Thereafter follows the fate, like other cities, with the fall of the Roman Empire. During the Middle Ages suffered economic decline and raids of the barbarians, including that of the Goths Totila and the Lombards of Faroaldo (578) .For two centuries was under the rule of the Lombard Duchy of Spoleto, (593-789), until it was not under the control of the Franks took to Italy with Charles the Great. In these centuries, accentuated the power of the bishops (the so-called bishop-counts), including Conrad II who graduated with special grants to the feudal lord Bishop Bernardo I in 1037, the right to mint.

In time, the city is dragged on several occasions in the wider struggle for dominance in Europe between the Guelphs and Ghibellines. In 1183 it is in free commune, but knowing the looting and destruction at the hands of the imperial armies of Frederick II. The municipal liberties are undermined by factionalism among the most prominent families, including the Lord D'Andrea Acquaviva. During the conquest of Ladislaus I - King of Naples, the city deserved to be ruled by the famous military leader of Italy Count by Count Carrara Carrara or said Carrara, to which the king of Naples granted the title of Viceroy of Abruzzo, and Prince of Ascoli for himself and his sons who succeeded him, and Obizzo Ardizzone, when they buried him with great pomp in the Cathedral of the city, as it wants the Bascetta. The struggles eventually pave the way for ambitious people like Jailbird Malatesta (XIV century) that is driven by a revolt and after Francesco Sforza, establishing a vicious tyrant (fifteenth century) that was pulled down in 1482, even if it is forced to Ascoli recognize the sovereignty of the Church. Do not cease internal disturbances between opposing factions leading to decades of rebellions, massacres, looting, banditry and the growth of the decay of civic virtues. Was annexed to the first Roman Republic and in 1860 was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy of which will follow from now on all the events. Worthy of note are the events of September 1943 in Ascoli resistance against German occupation, which have earned the city the Gold Medal for Military Valour for partisan activities (2001).

Ascoli Piceno is one of the monumental cities of Italy: its old town is entirely built of travertine, a sedimentary rock limestone extracted from quarries in the area, and is centered around the Renaissance Piazza del Popolo where some of the most important buildings in the such as the Palace of the Captains, the historic Caffè Meletti and the church of San Francesco. Other core city is the urban space of square Arringo, the oldest square in Ascoli, where rise the medieval Baptistery of San Giovanni, the Cathedral of St. Emidio, which encloses the crypt also dedicated to the patron saint.
