Overview

Photos and Description of this Cirfontaines-en-Azois holiday barn

Spacious 2-bedroomed gite combining rustic charm with modern convenience

Our two-bedroomed, two-bathroomed gite has beams and exposed stone to remind you of its agricultural origins whilst having all the modern additions that you'd expect from a luxury holiday letting - a spacious kitchen with high-quality appliances, British and French TV, wireless internet, underfloor heating and a wood burning stove. There are no hidden charges in our rental price - linen, electricity, heating (including wood for the stove) and cleaning at the end of your stay are included. Sociable, well-behaved dogs are welcome.

Cirfontaines en Azois is a small village four hours by car from Calais, and also accessible by train. This secret corner of France is almost unknown to tourists yet offers a wide variety of activities and places of interest. But, enticed by the beautiful view of the forest and the south-facing terrace, you may prefer to relax by the solar-heated pool and then watch the sun go down with an aperitif!

Two years after buying our farmhouse as a holiday home we were so seduced by this corner of France that we picked up sticks and moved here. Our gite is a conversion of one of the two barns on our property and, while we are close by if you need help or ideas for making the most of your stay, another large barn separates our house from the gite so you can also enjoy your holiday in seclusion!

Before moving here, we enjoyed many Gite holidays in France and we've applied our experiences, good and bad, in designing and fitting out our property. So, the kitchen has plenty of space for several people to cook at once, there's a utility room to hide dirty boots and dry wet coats and there's a second fridge for keeping sufficient rosé (or Champagne) chilled.

The village is well-placed for you explore the Champagne region and Burgundy. Our visitors have enjoyed local attractions like the historic town of Langres, the De Gaulle museum at Colombey les Deux Eglises and the lakes east of Troyes and around Montier en Der, both renowned for bird-spotting.

Further afield, it's more than feasible to enjoy a day in Troyes, Reims, Dijon, Auxerre, Gray or Chablis. Central Paris is also accessible by train and it's not unknown for our visitors to drive to Disneyland Paris.

Our website gives you more information on things you can do during your holiday here.

Perfect Home for two weeks! Amazing pool! Just wished we could live there.

This property is just perfect. Sarah and Jonathan are also perfect. Can't recommend it enough. This property was not just a base for two weeks but felt so comfortable and relaxed, it was like a home. Down stairs being open plan was fab. While I was cooking it was nice to still be with everyone and not feel shut off. The pictures do not do this house justice. It's a really lovely size.

Very spacious. The downstairs shower was brilliant for when you have been swimming and you come in with all the kids and they needs showers and sorting out. The pool was also brilliant. Large warm and clean. Views from the pool and also the kitchen window were lovely.

We have three children - 8, 5, and 2 years. The property, pool and local area was perfect for all of them. Sarah and Jonathan lent us bikes and even has a trike for our littlest! Made his holiday.

Enjoyed relaxing and doing nothing or local walks and bike rides.

The deer park at Chateauvillain was beautiful, peaceful and perfect for a stroll.

We also drove into Paris for the day. Which was amazing -early start of 5.30am and returned at 11pm. But definitely worth it.

We also have a brilliant day at Nigoland. I don't particularly like theme parks - as I am not keen on the big rides- but would definitely recommend it. Plenty to do for all ages including my two year old. The gardens and grounds we also beautiful.

We also enjoyed being in the champagne region. We sampled quiet a few different bottles. And enjoyed driving round seeing the vines growing and finding the different vineyards. We might have brought a few bottles home with us!!!!

Thank you again for a wonderful two weeks.

  • 5 of 5

We were very happy to stay at Cirfontaines again, and to bring our friends with us.This is a superb property and Jonathon and Sarah are the perfect hosts. This is a special part of Champagne, so much to do and see, apart from all the wonderful things to eat and drink.A week just isn't enough time to spend here, so we will just have to come back once again. Many thanks again Jonathon and Sarah, we appreciate your friendship very much.

Luxurious peaceful spacious property with a great pool and enclosed garden. A real rural retreat!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed a week here this summer and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The gîte is very spacious and comfortable and we were made to feel very welcome.

The pool area is fantastic and the grounds of the gîte are fully enclosed which is especially good for visitors with dogs.

The welcome pack and introductory drinks by the pool was a very nice touch!

I would highly recommend this property as a base to explore the region... or just as a lovely place to while away a peaceful holiday!

A friendly warm welcome to a cottage with everything and more. By far the best equipped property we have rented in France with Sarah and Jonathan perfect hosts with a great knowledge of the local area from champagne houses to local restaurants and more but never intrusive just being there for any queries. Overall a fantastic holiday that will long be remembered. Cannot recommend highly enough..

Second visit hope to return again :-)

  • 5 of 5

My second stay, love the place, it's quiet with lovely local walks and scenery. It's great to sit by the pool, relax and have a BBQ, visit the local champagne and wine areas. It is extremely dog friendly and my three Spinone were made to feel at home by Sarah, Jonathan and of course, Circé. The property is very spacious, comfortable and very well equipped. Would love to visit again soon!

A perfect long weekend

  • 5 of 5

We fully enjoyed the stay at the gite - a perfect place for our family with 3 children! The sun was out, the weather really nice and the pool was very much appreciated.

The owners are really friendly and gave lots of advice on what to do in the area, thank you very much, Sarah and Jonathan!

The house is spacious and very well equipped, very clean. One of the best gites we have ever been to.

The children already miss Circe, the owners' dog!

Car: recommended

Situated in a rural village in the Champagne / Burgundy borders, in gently rolling countryside with open farmland and mixed forest, this corner of France is largely undiscovered by tourists and is ideal for walking and cycling.

Nearby there are Champagne houses where you can taste delightful Champagnes to rival the well known brands. Just a 15 minute drive away is Colombey les Deux Eglises, the home of Charles de Gaulle with a magnificent new museum. The medieval city of Troyes is less than hour's drive. Slightly further afield is the city of Dijon, famous for its cuisine and architecture . Closer to home you can visit the atelier of Pierre-Auguste Renoir at Essoyes, or discover the secrets of Voltaire and Emilie du Chatelet at the exquisite Chateau at Cirey sur Blaise.

For the younger at heart the highly recommend theme park of Nigoland is also close by. Fancy a day trip to Paris and climbing the Eiffel Tower? Well, with an early start, its just two hours by train from the station at nearby Bar sur Aube.
