About this property

Giuseppina - converted stone barn with spectacular mountain scenery & pool

Conveniently located 10km from the Rioveggio exit of PANORAMICO branch of the A1 motorway, backbone to Italy, between Bologna and Florence, 6Stanco is situated at the beginning of the Apennine mountain range on the southern slope of Monte Stanco, with stunning mountain views towards Tuscany. Set in the intimate village of Stanco 6Stanco is a group of stone buildings surrounding a Farmstead courtyard, originally the main landowner's home, private chapel, barn and haywain, residence of their farm workers and harvesters. Renovated in 2011-12, the converted chestnut-drying barn, Olimpia, is a three-bedroomed independent villa, beside the garden and the 5x11m pool, completed in 2013. Giacomina and Giuseppina are the two mirror-image, studio flats on the raised ground floor of the converted haywain and cattle stalls, each with its own balconied entrance. We can accommodate groups of friends or extended families for unforgettable holidays! We live most of the year in the restored main stone house; also a Bed & Breakfast with three double rooms available.
The lower level of the Haywain is the 60sq.m Course Room; adjacent to the main sun terrace. There is Horse riding at our local Pegasus Riding Stables and trekking for seasoned riders. At 600m.a.s.l. no air-conditioning is necessary here and the mountain panorama is breathtaking.

A hidden gem off the beaten track
Our family (2 adults, 2 children - 10 and 7) spent 2 weeks at 6Stanco in July 2014. We stayed in the Olimpia Villa. We have travelled through Italy quite a lot over the last few years and we would definitely put 6Stanco on our return list. We had an amazing two weeks in an area that is probably missed by a lot of tourists. 6Stanco is a beautiful property that has been lovingly renovated by Ruth and Andrea. It sits in a very small village with incredible views across the surrounding hills and valleys. The property is well maintained and our Villa was clean and everything worked. The Villa has 3 bedrooms which was ideal for our family. It has a nice outdoor patio area that overlooks the pool. We really enjoyed the space around the pool area and the kids had an awesome time swimming, playing on the trampoline or just enjoying the beautiful weather while playing cards. Ruth and Andrea were incredible hosts and did everything to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. Some highlights of our stay: - East access by car or train to Bologna or Firenze. We were able to explore these great cities and then return to the tranquility of Stanco and unwind after a hard day sightseeing. The Ferrari and Lamborghini museums are also a must! - There are many beautiful villages in the surrounding valleys and hills. Ruth can provide a great guide to some of these. Our favourite was probably the waterfall at Labante. - Every morning we would take the short car ride or a nice walk for 3km down the hill to the village of Grizzana Morandi to have a morning coffee and brioche at Bar Pina with the locals. GM also has a small supermarket an a little bakery (Forno Guido) that makes an incredible jam torte - not to be missed! Any more serious food shopping can be done in Vergato which is in the valley below. - Some great little local restaurants around. Our favourite was Nel Castagneto which is about 10 mins away. Beautiful, traditional food made fresh every day. We even joined Christina for a cooking class one day to learn the tricks of making the local pasta and sauces. The kids made the cookies for desert. We also tried La Prada which was also great. - Once a week, Ruth hosted a dinner outside the main house for all the guests. Los of pizza, antipasta and cakes. A great chance to meet the other guests and learn more about 6Stanco. - Incredible bike riding if you are a cyclist. Overall, a near perfect 2 weeks in a beautiful area of Italy.

Cosy little hideaway in the hills
This is a lovely spot in the hills, the pool a godsend in the scorching heat. The apartment was everything we expected, ideal for a family of four. Great restaurants nearby but sadly lacking a bar/pasticceria that is reaslitically walkable. There seems to have once been one but is now closed down. Ruth and her family were so welcoming and were very helpful and easy to deal with. They left us to it but were on hand if we needed anything

A real taste of Italy
We have just returned from our stay at 6Stanco with wonderful hosts Ruth and Andrea. Normally, I am ready for home after a few days away but I didn’t want to leave. On day two, the villagers set up their annual bingo event in the courtyard and we were made to feel very welcome and included. Our teenage daughters won a huge hamper of Local produce. A few days later we were able to go to the village pizza event - all the 6Stanco guests went along for pizza and drinks. During the week, Ruth and Andrea also invited all their guests to eat together one evening and we enjoyed some lovely home cooked treats. We were easily able to visit Bologna (we were able to catch the train from from Grizzana Morandi) and Florence (an hours drive - the trains were not running that day) which were both beautiful. We discovered a lovely gelateria in Vergato, a great pizzeria which took us back to the 80s - in a good way - (Brace). The shared pool was a real plus at the end of a hot day. Thank you to Ruth and Andrea. Your hospitality was tremendous and we’d love to come back soon!

Familiäres Paradies in Bestlage

We probably watched too many 'buy a ruin and do it up ' television programmes, but that's what we chose to do, left the big city and now we live most of the year in the community of this small mountain village.
Ruth, an architect by profession, was born and educated in London, UK. Andrea is Bolognese and is a Restaurant food company director. We have two daughters and a son. We like good food, wine and when not travelling, at least planning and discussing the next trip!

Why they chose this property

Beautiful, stylish, comfortable and well-equipped stone buildings. New, modern convenience but with architectural character where you can relax and enjoy yourselves. Situated in a safe, peaceful village with friendly locals and very helpful hosts next door! Great swimming pool and plenty of space for al fresco dining, sun bathing or just reading a book in the garden. Only 12 minutes to the closest motorway exit which is between Bologna and Florence so very well-located for daytrips all over Emilia Romagna and Tuscany, even as far as Venice. The perfect combination of cultural visits to a variety of important Art Cities, or more low-key trips locally, by day, then coming back to your beautiful 6Stanco apartment each evening to cooler, balmier temperatures, after a sometimes stiflingly-hot, inner-city visit in mid-summer, with no need for air-con here, breath-taking sunsets across the Reno valley, less noise than the bustling towns and cities and easy parking! Unforgettably fantastic holidays!

What makes this property unique

Our complimentary, weekly, summer dinners under the ancient grapevine in the company of the other interesting guests. Animated by master funster, Andrea. Relaxing in a private homestead and garden, not a huge impersonal complex, with lovely pool. Courses in Regional cookery, English, Yoga, Painting, Massage, Horse-riding and Ceramics can be offered: We run English language courses in June and September, Ceramics is available if requested in advance and a Potter is available for your dates. Johann runs a Painting Course every September. The local 'Nel Castagneto' restaurant can do a regional cookery demonstration course, usually a Tuesday afternoon, throughout the summer. Hatha Yoga sessions are in Pian di Setta and Massage can be organized in the summer if requested at the time of your booking. Our shared, inside- knowledge of the best places to visit in this relatively un-tourist-trodden area, plus what to avoid when you day-trip further afield.
