Wanggulay is a place to relax and enjoy the tranquility of the forest.

Facilities

Natural ochres, earth-colours and textures invite you into the main living area under a large timber cathedral ceiling. The spacious open-plan living area extends outside to a wide verandah high above the forest floor in the treetops. Bi-fold doors slide back, allowing the large outdoor area to become part of the living room. On hot days, with the doors closed, the integrated air-conditioning keeps the house cool. On the floor below is a smaller living area with a lounge, large screen television and bi-fold doors opening onto a verandah.

Of course you can take your 'living area' outside to the resort-style pool or the deck amongst the trees on the hillside below the house.

BEDROOMS

A place to dream in the land of the 'dreamtime.

The master bedroom looks out through the dappled sunlight of the treetops with the river down below. Birds sing and play in the branches surrounding the large balcony outside.

Fine linen, polished timber floors - attention to detail, decorative soaps in a Balinese tray, fragrant frangipannis floating in a bowl and a luxurious ensuite bathroom with a spa-bath.

THE POOL

Awarded for category of " Best Creative Pool In Queensland"

The cooling sound of pool water cascading into Japanese riverbed rocks has a 'zen' like quality in harmony with the environment.

The pool is unique with a series of long steps leading down to water two metres deep which, at night with the pool light on, becomes a cool luminescent blue.

If you feel like a midnight swim under the stars there is access to the pool via the main bedroom. Throw some steaks on the bbq, lie on the sundeck with cool drinks or swim in the cool water - 'Wanggulay' has the perfect outdoor entertaining area

Family celebration

  • 5 of 5

It was a big ask: 60th birthday celebrations, 3 generations, 7 adults taking a week's leave to spend 7 days together with 3 young children, flying from Adelaide to Cairns for some warmth. Expectations were high and Wanggulay didn't disappoint.

We loved the setting, the facilities, the welcome and the additional services.

We were blessed with wonderful weather and ate every meal outdoors.

The pool was a great hit and the location of the property enabled several pleasant walks as well as easy travel to a number of great experiences.

Bet was very welcoming and helpful.

The bedrooms were very comfortable but my favourite was the Balinese day bed on the upstairs verandah. I spent the end of each night there with a candle and a glass of wine, enjoying the silence and darkness.

A day trip to the outer reef was organised for us by the Wanggulay team and made for a memorable day. We highly recommend the Silverswift trip to the outer reef.

It will probably be some time before the 10 of us are together for a week again but we'd love to return to Wanggulay. If only they had a retreat for middle aged couples!

Exactly as promised

  • 5 of 5

My family of 8 stayed at the property this April. We found everything exactly as advertised; the photos on the website are very representative of the home we had no issues at all with air-conditioning and were able to use the BBQ without problems. Indeed we found the location perfect away from the hustle and bustle of Cairns but convenient to both Cairns and Port Douglas attractions. I found the owner were very responsive to our needs. I would much rather stay here than pay for four separate hotel rooms in some resort.

Wanggulay...translated in English means "Heaven"

  • 5 of 5

When you are stressed at work and you drift away daydreaming about a holiday, Wanggulay is probably the imagine you have in your head. The accommodation is picturesque. Sitting nicely within the rain forest canopy. Its like a giant tree house for adults, with all the modern luxuries you would expect from a 5 star resort. Wanggulay is a fantastic place for a family holiday as everything you want for yourself and the kids can be found at the accommodation and its all free!

Brett and Bet and their team have great customer services skills. Any issues are resolved immediately and follow-up the next day to ensure continuity.

My only complaint is that we couldn't stay for longer as my family could have easily stayed another week there.

We will definitely be back here next time we are in Cairns.

Disappointed

  • 2 of 5

Although a lovely location and property, it was unfortunate that the property did not have hot water for nearly the entire duration of our stay. It was disappointing to say the least as we had to check a range of items to try and identify the issue on behalf of the owner which was time consuming and distracting as well as showing a tradesperson the issues. What was supposed to be a peaceful getaway turned into one of the most stressful getaways we have had with our newborn. I would strongly suggest that the owner implements maintenance checks for the property to ensure that guests can enjoy their stay.

Owner's Response: Dear Kate, Thank you for your comments we have certainly taken them on board; the problem will not occur again. We were delighted to receive this email (below) from you thanking us. For the readers, we offered a further free night accommodation as compensation, and then took the cost of one night off the accommodation charge. The hot water system was unusable for a fraction of the time; unusually the gas pilot light had extinguished (first time in 12 years). Our Manager, Bet immediately attended when she was informed of the problem. Kate asked for trouble shooting instructions while Bet was underway; we provided them, and the problem was fixed. ......... Just a quick email to let you know that with your instructions my partner Skeen was able to relight the pilot light. Skeen informed Bet that unfortunately we are unable to take up your kind offer of staying an extra night due to other commitments, therefore we would like to use our free night for tonight instead and would greatly appreciate a refund. Thank you for all your assistance to rectify this issue and your kind offer of a free night, we really do appreciate it. I am now looking forward to going and having a hot shower! Thanks again. Cheers Kate We are at a loss to understand why Kate provided such a negative review after she received the compensation and after she wrote this letter. Perhaps it was because we could not offer her a complete refund for the stay. We decided to check with the Holiday Rental Industry Association if this was fair compensation to refund the cost of one night and offer additional free night. We were informed it was more than fair. We wish Kate and Skeen well, we also offered them another free night at another time.

Beautiful property well maintained

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Wanggulay Bali for a week in August. It was wonderful. We were a family of 10, with children ranging from 10 up to teenagers, 5 of us are adults. The house did not at any time feel cramped or overcrowded. It is beautifully decorated and very clean. We really enjoyed the spa pool and deck area and it was lovely to be able to sit together as a family and eat outside. There is plenty to do in the area and the downloadable guide was very useful as was Brett's recommendation for diving with silver sonic at Port Douglas. I can fully recommend staying here and would not hesitate to come back if I had the opportunity.

Wish we had stayed longer

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here as a couple (yep we had the whole place to ourselves) and it was wonderful! we relaxed on the balcony surrounded by trees - it was so private, quiet and peaceful and the temperature and climate were perfect (we were there in July). The pool was fantastic and we loved playing table tennis and going for walks to explore the local area. The owners were so lovely and even ordered in groceries for us so we had snacks waiting when we arrived. This place looks exactly like the photos and it is very clean and tidy. Definitely check out the local restaurants/cafes and activities recommended in the guidebook. We will be back and wish we had stayed longer! Highly recommend.
