Why Julie Robotham chose Blackheath
We bought this property in 1995, following a wonderful stay at a nearby holiday house. We love the view and the relaxing atmosphere. We live in the urban inner west of Sydney and our children have grown up visiting the house - it is a refreshing antidote to the city. We plan to keep it in our family as long as we possibly can. We have taken holiday lettings for more than 20 years, and we are delighted that some of our guests have been visiting annually for most of that time. Recently we welcomed the "second generation" child of one of our guests - returning with their own young family. It is a great pleasure to offer an affordable holiday to people who appreciate the bush and the mountains community.

Lovely Period Cottage for Casual & Relaxing Stay with Knock-Out Views
My family had a perfect couple of days in Melaluca, breakfasting with some very cheeky birds (particularly the gorgeous confident magpie), pretending to read while really just soaking in the sensational views, and relaxing in front of a blazing fire after a great day's walk in the blue gum forest. The 10 minute walk into Blackheath for dinner seemed a little daunting at night, at least for those of us used to the bright lights of the inner city, but it proved easy. The only reason I have not given the stay 5 stars, is that, as described, the home is a lovely period cottage that has not been given a luxury makeover - and is priced accordingly which is much appreciated for a family that wanted to have a comfortable stay in a clean, well appointed home. It is 5 stars for what it advertises itself as. (I just never really know quite how the star system works, but think of 5 stars as top-of-the range luxury with linen sheets etc so please don't let the 4 stars put you off enjoying this home). Hopefully we will be back!
Thank you for this thoughtful review which I am sure will be really helpful to future guests, and I'm glad to hear you had a wonderful time.
Yes I think it can be ambiguous how to use the star rating system. As you've mentioned we are aimed at the comfortable rather than the luxury end of the market and priced accordingly. We're delighted when families like yours enjoy a simple, traditional holiday, and will be very please to welcome you back on your next visit to the mountains.
Best regards - Julie

Thank you for reviewing Melaleuca Cottage. I'm very glad to hear you stayed cosy on the coldest weekend of the year - including a heavy snowfall. Please come and stay with us again next time you visit the Blue Mountains.
Love the view. We have stayed many times and hope to return again soon!
Thank you! We particularly appreciate our regular guests, some of whom - like you - have been returning for many years. We look forward to welcoming you on your next trip.
Amazing view lovely warm and cosy.. Super comfy beds.. Lovely hostess super friendly.
Easy process from start to finish very accommodating host and wonderful. Weekend away.
Thank you for this great feedback. We replaced the mattresses recently and I'm glad you appreciated the extra comfort - very important when you're on holiday. It was a pleasure to welcome you and we would love to have your family stay again on your next visit to the mountains.
The walks that start just at the end of Gordon Avenue, 200 metres from Melaleuca Cottage, are some of the most special in the mountains. They are not on the epic scale of the iconic walks on the other side of the village, but they include many gorgeous and amazing experiences, which you are likely to share with just a few locals.
Walk across creeks, and behind waterfalls. Hear your voice echo in bowl-shaped rock chambers, and rest in caves and sheltered overhangs occupied by Aboriginal people for millennia.
Start by walking to Fort Rock, and see the massive expanse of farm country down below in Megalong and Kanimbla Valley. It's less than an hour return to the cottage.
From Fort Rock, you can retrace your steps a few minutes and descend towards Porters Pass. It is a fabulous and energetic walk, including a water hole where you can cool off on hot days.
Or if you prefer not to go so deeply into the valley, you can continue round Walls Ledge, returning to Blackheath Village by a set of steps.
Many of the paths were restored in 2018 and the sign-posting is accurate and current. But remember this is a less frequented walk and make sure you have a fully charged mobile phone and plenty of water.
We keep information about the local walking trails at the cottage. You're welcome to borrow them, and there are some good downloadable versions too.
We would love to hear about your experiences with these trails - which remain our own favourites after more than 20 years of visiting. Please send us an email or include your thoughts in a review of the cottage - we'll pass your ideas on to future guests.
