Overview

About the property

A very special hideaway in the culinary hub of South Fremantle

Welcome to the Silver Street Studio; the most perfect place in Fremantle for two. As a summer and winter retreat, the Studio is spacious, stylish, eclectic, very comfortable and 'very Fremantle'.... It is a haven for those who love art, travel, history, and being spoilt. This private, two story residence is so close to the heart of South Fremantle's culinary hub- yet is in a quiet and secluded location. Behind high limestone walls and within a lush courtyard garden, the Studio is the romantic's dream and has an ambient charm which is hard to beat. It is the perfect place in which to relax, escape the pressures of contemporary living, whilst being within instant reach of all facilities, South Beach and everything Fremantle has on offer.

Originally invisaged and constructed as an artist's studio, then gallery, for a sculptor and a ceramicist, 'Silver Street Studio' has been owned, for the last twenty years, by another artist and her geologist husband. Today, the studios have been tastefully converted into a wonderfully creative and eclectic residence which shares the couple's love of art and travel. Constructed from large local limestone blocks rescued from a former Fremantle church, magnificent one hundred year old timbers from 'Rob's' (South Fremantle) Jetty, and other fascinating items of memorabilia, including a turret from the old Swanbourne Hospital, the building speaks to local history, contemporary art, interior design and old world charm.

On arrival, our guests enter into a lush courtyard garden through the small 'hobbit' door within the 'medieval' gate. In summer, this area is shaded by a plane tree, a poinciana, palms, an olive tree, a weeping mulberry and a grape vine. This alfresco garden makes an ideal setting for a private breakfast, a leisurely lunch, or romantic evening BBQ.

Huge glass sliding doors connect this leafy outdoor area to a large, open-plan, downstairs living space. There is a well equipped kitchen, a dining area which looks onto the garden, and a very comfortable leather lounge. Beautiful rugs, art works and eclectic furnishings, together with the idiosyncratic architectural style create a warm, rich, environment to be enjoyed.

The upper Studio level, originally ceramic studios, is now reached internally via a stylish industrial staircase, designed by Troppo Architects The bedroom has a very comfortable queen size bed, supplied with quality bedding and white laundered, French, linen, sheets. A small mezzanine walkway connects this space to the bathroom/dressing room area which opens onto a north facing balcony. This provides a lovely 'open air' spot for a sumptuous bath under the stars. The former kiln room, to the left of the balcony, has been converted into a peaceful reading/meditation space and an occasional single bedroom in summer.

The downstairs store room houses two mountain bikes which we are happy to lend to our guests to use around Fremantle and for exploring the coastal heathlands.

On arrival we give you a bottle of fine Vasse Felix 'red' and Margaret River cheeses, plus a delicious hamper for your first morning and beyond....Besides a selection of beautiful fresh fruits, the hamper contains locally made jams, WA roasted coffee beans, gourmet teas, home-made muesli, free range eggs and freshly baked bread from our local bakery at the end of the more. Please let us know if you have any special dietary requirements and we will adjust the hamper accordingly.

An extra single bed can be made available on request for one extra adult and/or a cot is available for a small baby. However, although large, the building is fairly open plan and we primarily see the Silver Street Studio as a romantic retreat for couples.

Please note, this accommodation is not really suitable for active toddlers, or the very frail. It is a unique, wonderfully eclectic, architecturally rich, space that truly rewards those with creative spirit who want something beyond, and quite different from 'the norm'.

We are in an enviable location near great cafés and restaurants , a health food shop, a gourmet super market, various food outlets, boutique shops, a health spa and all other facilities. We are just two hundred metres from the Yacht Club, Fishing Boat Harbour and a short walk from both South Beach and Central Fremantle.

You won't need a car to travel around town. Everything is walkable. However, if you choose not to walk or take the bikes, the free CAT bus service does run every ten minutes from our nearby stop. It takes a circular route around Fremantle via various sites of historic interest, stopping at the railway station for those wishing to travel into the centre of Perth. But why not take a picnic, follow the many cycle tracks to quiet beaches along the coastal heath-lands!

Fremantle is a wonderful holiday destination: Our visitors can enjoy beach life and a range of available water sports. As well as having a vibrant café culture, there are art galleries, specialty shops and many historical attractions to enjoy. These include the WA Maritime Museum, The Shipwreck Gallery, Fishing Boat Harbour, the Round House, Bather's Beach Art Precinct, the World Heritage listed Fremantle Jail with its convict built underground canal system, Fremantle Markets, The Fremantle Arts Centre (the former convict built asylum) and our recently heritage listed 'West End'. A wide range of day trips are available and regular ferries leave for Rottnest Island. Whale watching is a must. All can easily be booked through the local Tourist Office.

Fremantle offers a wide range of evening entertainments but you can of course, just sit at 'home', listen to music, watch TV/download a DVD, play chess or find a really good 'read' from our excellent selection of books - and relax!

If your required dates for Silver Street Studio are taken, we invite you to look at our other property, Coral Street Cottage, just next door, which is also registered with HomeAway. Please note, we do have a minimum stay of 3 nights for both of our properties

Feel welcome to follow us on facebook at freosilverstreetstudio . We try to keep you up to date with things happening in and around town. Here are a few comments from our Studio guest book:-

"A magical retreat for lovers separated by half a planet. Thank you Hugh and Judy. We will be back". Sandy and Don from North Fremantle and Denver, USA.

"What a lovely beginning to married life! After our wedding, this place was a perfect getaway from crazy preparations. Thank you for all the small touches, a truly incredible work of art". Sophie and Adam, Perth, WA.

"Textures, colours, contrasts, wood smells, patterns of light, varied spaces, harmony and all the special touches made SSS a very memorable base for our Australia Day in Fremantle. Thank you very much Hugh and Judy for a very nice stay". Jonty and Loren Eales, Kalgoorlie, WA.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

About Judy Durey

I have a professional back ground in the arts. I love living in Fremantle. There is a great sense of community here, new things happening daily and cultural festivals all year round.

I grew up in the UK, lived in Africa for 8 years before moving to Perth via Tenant Creek with my husband, a geologist. We lived as a family on a 'bush block' in the Perth Hills before settling in South Fremantle by the sea.

Judy Durey purchased this house in 1998

Why Judy Durey chose South Fremantle

The Silver Street Studio is a unique South Fremantle icon built by a local sculptor between the late 70s - early 80s. Architecturally very interesting; the building is constructed from local limestone and wood from the historic 'woolstores' and Rob's jetty in South Fremantle. The turret was rescued from the old Swanbourne Hospital. The interior decor is warm and eclectic and incorporates many items of memorabilia; a collection prompted by our love of art and travel. In fact, every object tells a story which we are happy to share...

What makes this house unique

The Silver Street Studio is quiet, has a lovely ambience, is very private and is in a fantastic location. Hidden behind high limestone walls, we are, in fact, close to everything. At the end of our little street, there are great cafés and restaurants, fresh food outlets, boutiques, a health spa and you stay at home, there is much to make you feel comfortable...

Our mini honeymoon

  • 5 of 5

a quirky and cosy studio nestled away through a little hobbit door was perfect for our mini honeymoon. So many nooks and crannies to explore. We especially loved how the bed was situated and the outdoor bath on the balcony gave it a very romantic feel. The breakfast hamper and wine was a real treat and it was a bonus to have bikes available to ride around south fremantle. A three night stay just wasn't enough so we will be booking this studio again on our wedding anniversary.

An eclectic beauty

Warm, inviting and an eclectic mix to make you feel at home. The host was very accommodating and provided a beautiful hamper on arrival and checked on us during our stay. The property is in a good location in Freemantle and push bikes are provided if you want to venture further afield. Everything is thought of and of a good standard. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
