Photos and Description of this Penneshaw holiday cottage

Just 70 metres from the shoreline formed by glaciers 250 million years ago in the picturesque little town of Penneshaw, Kangaroo Island, is Christmas Cove Cottage, an extensively renovated 100 year-old stone home located on Howard Drive near Christmas Cove, the beautiful boat harbour.

The cottage is an arty mix of old and new - quirky, eclectic and fairly simple. It has a huge old stone fireplace for a cosy log fire or gas or split system heaters to warm up on chilly nights and is cooled by air condititoning, fans and evening sea breezes when it's hot with views over top of two nearby houses to the ocean.

The Penneshaw main street (pub, cafes, IGA) is about 10 minutes walk away and the gorgeous swimming beach (Hog Bay) about 15 minutes walk or 2 minutes drive from the cottage. The Gateway KI Visitor's Information Centre is only 50 metres away too for all your island information.

**We are able to offer a very competitive tariff because GUESTS ARE REQUIRED TO LEAVE THE COTTAGE AS CLEAN AND TIDY AS THEY FOUND IT ON ARRIVAL so cleaning costs are minimal. This means cleaning the kitchen, fridge, bathroom, shower, toilet, barbecue, making up the beds, vacuuming and the fireplace if you use it.

**GUESTS MUST PROVIDE THEIR OWN LINEN (sheets, pillow cases, towels, bath mat, t-towels etc). Doonas, extra blankets are provided, as are pillows (both feather and foam) but take your own if you sleep best with a special one.

Christmas Cove Cottage sleeps up to 6 people. Tariff is for 2 adults and 2 children.

We restrict the cottage to a maximum of 4 adults. More than 2 adults are charged extra (see tariff details).

**All crockery, cutlery, soap, washing liquid, toilet paper etc provided.

A $100 deposit is required to confirm your booking and is deducted from your final payment which is required 14 days prior to arrival.

We must have at least 14 days notice of cancellation if the booking is outside the standard tariff time (ie Peak Summer, Summer, School Holiday, Easter or Long Weekend) for full refund of deposit. Less than 14 days notice of cancellation results in a non-refundable deposit. We find direct debit via internet banking is the most convenient.


A $200 bond is payable with your final payment and will be refunded within 14 days of departure after the caretaker has checked the cottage for any damage or extra cleaning. Extra cleaning is charged at $45 per hour and any damage is charged at cost of replacement and deducted from your bond, plus any additional costs if the caretaker is called etc.


Check-in any time. Check out is midday. Late check-out (any time after midday) is $50 extra.

**Please advise your check-in and check-out times because rental cross-over is sometimes often extremely tight.

Once the full tariff and bond are paid, the key to the cottage will be left at a pre-arranged collection point the night before your arrival. A very comprehensive Cottage Instruction Manual and Tenant Obligations will be emailed to you and a second copy is in the kitchen island bench drawer. Directions to the cottage are also emailed at this time. At this time we require an email from you stating your arrival and departure times and that you understand and agree to the Tenant Obligations (re advising us if additional guests will be staying as this incurs additional fees).


The two rooms at the front of the house are the original 2-roomed limestone cottage and contain 2 bedrooms. Bedroom 1 contains a 1 double bed whilst bedroom 2 contains two single beds and a double bunk suitable for children. At the rear of the house is a large open loft-like space with views across the top of 2 nearby houses to the sea.

The house has split-system air-conditioning, an Ikea kitchen with glass electric cooktop and electric oven, new fridge, bathroom and laundry with new Bosch front loading washing machine. There is also supplementary gas heating and a wood fire. The cottage has beautiful old (and worn) 100 year old wooden floors and ceilings. Large bifold doors lead to the deck with barbeque & two large bifold windows let in the fresh air & sounds of the sea.

A little record player can be used to listen to the large collection of old records - from Mario Lanza to Showtunes!

The cottage contains a simple ipod dock to play your own playlist or CDs. Check out the drawer of visitor information and brochures on all the exciting things to do on the island.

The cottage is also a gallery exhibiting original paintings of the island which are for sale.

Please note there is no garage or carport for a car. Parking is on the verge in front on the house.

The cottage is located on Howard Drive, Penneshaw (Penneshaw to Kingscote road) and is just two minutes walk to the boat harbour at Christmas Cove and a short walk into the main street with cafes, pub, bottle shop, supermarket, post office.

All Penneshaw properties have septic tanks so water must be used sparingly. The town of Penneshaw has no natural water source so our water supply is from a desalination plant.

The vehicle and passenger ferry from Cape Jervis on the mainland arrives at Penneshaw and is only a one minute drive from the cottage, so it's convenient for basing your travels around this spectacular wilderness island.

A Kangaroo Island holiday is an environmentally exhilarating experience with wildlife everywhere, natural foods and fantastic treat yourself!

Cottage by the sea

Just the place to relax and unwind. Big bi-fold windows and door to open up and let the fresh sea air and sunshine in. Read some of the fantastic old books or listen to the old records - from Mario Lanza to Broadway Hits. Walk to historic Christmas Cove nearby which was named by Captain Matthew Flinders when he moored nearby in 1802. Stroll to the main street and down to Hog Bay - one of the safest swimming beaches in South Australia and definitely one of the most beautiful with fine white sand, absolutely crystal clear azure blue water (take your snorkel and you'll see some fantastic brightly coloured fish around the rocks at the western end of the beach). The best part is that even during the Christmas season, this beach is NEVER crowded so take a book and umbrella and relax!

Kangaroo Island wilderness at your doorstep

If you're an adventurer there are thousands of places to explore and you really need a good couple of days just to get the feel of the place. Ask Rod or Keryn about some of the great places to walk nearby.

The coastal walk up to the old ruin via the 19th century footpath takes you past hundreds of wallabies and the most incredible sea view back to the mainland that will take your breath away. There's an old stone threshing floor and even an ancient horse drawn harvester still standing nearby.

See Antechamber Bay - a huge stretch of white sand and most days you'll be the only one there. Great fishing off the beach too. Make sure to drop into Chapman River Winery for the most amazing gourmet platters in Australia. Guaranteed!

Cape Willoughby - a tour of the old lighthouse and lighthouse keepers cottages is a memorable experience.

There is so much to do on Kangaroo Island - from tasting great local cheeses, honey, fish, free range chicken and Graham Lloyd's native cranberry jam is something you won't find anywhere else in the world. Pick up the Wine, Food and Art brochure or the Farm Gate and Cellar Door brochure. The Penneshaw Farmers' Market is the first sunday of the month down by Hog Bay whilst the car boot and other local food market is held at the same time on the oval. 9:00am - 1:00 pm

There's majestic Pennington Bay, Seal Bay, the Famous Five-like cave you walk through to get to Stokes Bay, the breathtaking wilderness of Flinders Chase National Park with echidnas and platypus and heaps of kangaroos and of course Kangaroo Island's wild sealing history has stories to make your hair curl...just ask Keryn.

There's enough on Kangaroo Island to last a life time and even if you've only got a few days...the memories will last forever!.
