THE HISTORY OF YARRAMALONG

Yarramalong (Place of Cedars) was first permanently settled by the families William Stinson (Stinsons Lane) Erekiel Waters, (who came from Maitland in1856.) Prior to this the hills and valleys had been logged by timber cutters driving oxen teams from around Wollombi and Maitland.

The Stinson family settled in Stinson’s Lane, the Waters family in what is now Yarramalong Village.

Other early settlers included William Beaven of Brush Creek, who was the first person to be buried in St. Barnabas graveyard. Others who came to live in the valley include the Hill, Boyd, Palmer and Fernance families, many of whose relatives are to be found in the local area.

As the numbers living in the valley increased, the need for a church building became apparent. Earlier, services had been held in the homes of the settlers. So originated St .Barnabas Church.

- The early pioneer Australians, (mid 1800’s) from which many of the residents originate.

- The Cedar Heritage (The red cedar trees were logged from this Valley in the last century, and the sawmill still exists) also still existing surrounded by beautiful flora and Red Cedar trees.

- Indigenous/nature history with abundant wildlife (Platypus – Wallabies/Wallaroos and wombats etc).

- Historic Wyong River which winds itself throughout the valley.

- Horse Heritage – Horse Studs/ Riding schools etc.

- Alpaca Farm.

- Manor House – lunch, afternoon tea / dinner plus entertainment.

- 150 Year Old St. Barnabas Church (restored) with original Cemetery.

- One of the oldest Cemetery’s in NSW.

- Local Public School established 1870.

- School of Arts, built in 1904.

- Popular destination for artists', cyclists & Sunday drivers.

- Local arts & Crafts.

When returning to Sydney, also try the Tourist drive from Bumble Hill . Follow the Road through to the T section on George Downs Drive, turn left and follow the sign to Sydney (a shorter trip). This will bring you back to the F3 at Calga (after Peats Ridge.)

A poem by a guest from 2010.

Teapots and canisters, lavender and lace,

Hydrangeas in vases, bound books in case

Verandahs of cedar and chairs made of cane;

You will find "Charlies Cottage" down Ravenswood Road

The kitchens so rustic with its old fuel stove;

There's so much to see, the eyes do rove

Round the shelves-to see an era gone by

What memories,or secrets, here do lie?

Peaceful, quiet,calm and serene

Are before me in the lovely scene;

A long chair with pillows invites me to lie

And happily watch the world go by

- poem by Marg Ress (Byron Bay - Jan 2010), a guest.

*It is a requirement of your booking condition that you leave the cottage in a reasonable and clean condition and all rubbish removed to the larger bins provided on the front verge.

Lovely to get away from 21st century & reconnect with bygone days!

  • 5 of 5

We spent 3 nights at Charlie's Cottage and it was the perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle of the 21st century and reconnect with the simpler, quieter joys of bygone days. We loved the rustic qualities of the cottage and sitting on the veranda, enjoying the views and listening to the farmland sounds, was one of our favourite past times. Yarramalong Valley is an easy 1 1/2 to 2-hour drive from Sydney (depending on your suburb) and in between sitting on the veranda, there was plenty to do, with bushwalks (connecting with The Great North Track) and the TreeTops rope climbing adventure only a short drive away near Wyong.

special cottage but not so cleaned

  • 2 of 5

The cottage is very special and lovely to see so many antique stuff. It's at quiet location and good size for a small family. However, we were welcomed by a dead mouse on the floor upon arrival, noisy floorboards that make sounds for every movement you make, it's pet friendly, so please expect pet hair everywhere and it sticks on your belongings. The beds are soft enough for us but the linens are a bit dirty, you can smell the dusty smells, poor kids got rash from the bed or linens and an adult got bitten by something in the bed, not sure what it is though. There are many board games to choose from although there's no mobile reception from the house. Overall, I think it's good for adults with maybe older kids, but not younger kids with sensitive skins.

Owner's Response: Bicki, Measured by weekend traffic, we are very fortunate that our affordable cottage enjoys an occupancy of well over 60%. That has been the case for nearly 15 years and, as the current owners, we can say that in the last three years we have had only two elaboratively negative comments, including yours. As you may have noticed, our guest book (which dates back to the early 2000's) has hundreds of positive, complimentary and joyful responses about the stays of the people involved. Springtime is a time of bloom around the world, including for the much maligned rodent. They appear in every corner of this planet. We have electronic anti pest devices in the cottage to avoid the experience you say you had, backed up by the discreet use of baits. You and your party of 4 or more enjoyed your one night stay obviously knowing the cottage is over 100 years old and pet friendly. The regular cottage cleaning is especially sensitive to that and your claim about the dust and pet hair can only be a complete exaggeration. Similarly your comments about linen etc, which is always washed and otherwise regularly renewed. We have never had any complaint or comment about bed/sleeping problems.........bizarre. Have a nice day :)

Tranquil

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely weekend stay. Quiet and tranquil no phone or internet connection to bother us. It is a step back in time to how the locals once lived but with a few modern conveniences. There are open spaces to enjoy. The views from the veranda are beautiful and have a different character depending on the time of day. I would stay there again but next time I would be better prepared to combat the mosquitos and ants.

A perfect excape

  • 5 of 5

I loved this cottage and was unable to remove myself from the verandah. In the evening the stars were so bright and I enjoyed watching the full moon dance through the trees. The cottage was very neat, tidy and warm and the main bed was super comfortable.
