Condo, 3 Bedrooms ~ 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8) ALL 27 FIVE STAR REVIEWS *****

As of October 6th there are only thirteen (13) available weeks now through next May. Check them out and compute the discounted rate ~ for example, the 2017 Winter High Season Saturday to Saturday seven night rate is $2,975, and after the discount the rate is only $2,380! We believe you will agree that the cost shared with another couple makes our penthouse a great value for your vacation base on Sint Maarten / St. Martin!

We invite you to rent a week (or more) at our penthouse - Palme d'Or (Golden Palm,) on the Island of Sint Maarten/St. Martin. We accept bookings on a Saturday to Saturday basis with a seven night minimum. The island, known as the Friendly Island, has a lot to offer couples or families. The vista from the penthouse is enchanting with a 330 degree radius thanks to our two separate balconies. The full-on view of the Caribbean, Cupecoy Beach, the comings and going of the finest cruise ships in the world, the best Island sunsets and four Islands within the near distance are just the start of your relaxing vacation. Please check out our "27 FIVE STAR ***** Reviews," as they will give you an idea of how relaxing our guests find the penthouse.

Elements of privacy or togetherness

The Master Bedroom Suite consists of a Basset furniture including a king bed along with a large dresser and two side tables and lamps. The TV has a built-in DVD player as well. Also, there is a full bathroom with two vanities recently fitted with new faucet sets. It has its own balcony known as the Sunrise Balcony overlooking the resort pool, Coconut Palms and back toward the French side and the lagoon.

The second bedroom is furnished with new Basset furniture including a king bed, dresser and two side stands with handmade lamps.. There is a TV in the bedroom also.

The bath by the queen bedroom can be 'locked out' to provide privacy for your guests in the room as there is also access from the main hall. This was just furnished with new handmade Teak furniture since the winter of 2014. The bathroom also was recently fitted with new faucet sets.

A powder room is adjacent to the sunroom. The sunroom is between the two balconies and again offers the full Caribbean view, along with a reading area and the main dining table should there be the occasional rain during dinner. A computer stand and printer are placed in a corner of the dining room, and free wireless Internet service is provided throughout the Penthouse. Sliding doors allow for a breeze whenever desired.

This condominium penthouse is greater than 1,550 square feet and along with the amenities already mentioned, it has washer/dryer access, a kitchen complete with china, flatware, glassware and standard appliances. The great room has two settees and a queen size sofa bed, a side table and lamp along with a coffee table that matches one of the settees. There is a 42' HD Flat Screen TV with cable and a DVD player. A game table/breakfast table is also in this large area.

The art throughout the penthouse is excellent with local artists reflecting the feel and charm of the Island.

The balcony off the great room also offers three chaise lounges, side table, a dining table with four chairs and another with two. A kettle grill is situated here as well. This is where you can share 'Sundowner' cocktails as you watch the Sun set over the Caribbean along the Cliffs of Cupecoy. Although smoking is not permitted in any part of the Tower, these two balconies do address that desire.

As our property is on the Dutch side, the electrical systems are as we know them in the US and Canada. The currency is the Dutch Guilder which is pegged to the US dollar at $1.78 to $1.00; therefore, when you are in the market, although the pricing may seem 'steep,' it is likely in Gulders "NAF" that will be converted at the register. The French side of the island is tied to the Euro, and that is presently $1.00 US to the Euro at $1.13 (as of 8/15/16,) the best it has been for US travelers in more than ten years! However, many restaurants offer US Dollar for Euro parity when paying cash, keeping in mind that they may have 'tweaked' the menu pricing some to allow them to do that.

There is an upscale market at Porto Cupecoy, just 1/8th of a mile from The Ocean Club with a number of enjoyable restaurants. Our latest discovery is the Simply Market by the small Lagoon Bridge in Marigot. It is offering a true 1USD = 1 Euro and the wines, cheeses, meats, rotisserie chicken, pates` are all exceptional, both in price and quality. We suggest that you go pass the airport to the new Lagoon Bridge then cross over and take the round-about leading you left to the French side. As you enter into Marigot, take the first round-about left and follow that road, which leads you to a left turn only. From there proceed two short blocks, then left. Passing the cemetery on the right, proceed through that round-about and the Simply Market will be on your right just before the small Lagoon Bridge.

Assigned enclosed parking is on the ground floor with an elevator to the penthouse.

The staff at the Ocean Club reflects the small, intimate quality of the Club. Cheryl and Noreen at the front desk are always accommodating with a smile, and our personal housekeeper, Mildred, will see to your every housekeeping need.

About Brian Tremain

I am a portfolio manager for UBS Financial Services, Inc. and the creator and manager of The Lambda Strategy.

My husband, Phil Dunn, a former restaurateur, caterer and is currently teaching cooking classes in Lexington. Phil also serves as the chef for tours to Ireland, Italy, Germany, Austria and Great Britain. Phil is a professional chef who has been recognized for his catering Queen Elizabeth's two visits to Lexington, KY.

Spending time with our children and their spouses and our three grandsons in Ohio is always great since they are nearby. Travel, along with cruises, art exhibits, Broadway and opera keep us active.

We have been 'phasing' into retirement since 2013, and the Penthouse is the realization of one of our goals.

As I update this on 10/3/16 I am in the Sunroom overlooking the Caribbean Sea and Cupecoy Beach where recent weather brought a beautiful, long and wide sandy beach ashore!

These past five years have brought us many fine guests to our Penthouse, enjoying the island and respectful of our island home.

Brian Tremain purchased this condo in 2002

Why Brian Tremain chose St Maarten / Saint Martin

We had owned three weeks at this resort in one of the beach front Villas, and felt that this was the time to 'lock in' the best location and unit in this intimate and charming resort.

What makes this condo unique

I have been going to SXM since 1986 and Phil began joining me in 1994 and we are especially fond of the French side - the food - the ambience - the wine - the cheese and, of course, the beaches. Being an eighth of a mile from the French border works very well for us, and now with the Euro so much lower (below 1.12as of 10/4/16) dining on the French side is very wonderful and affordable!

The Real Deal

  • 5 of 5

There is a reason that every review is 5 stars- the condo is wonderful. It was a final family vacation before our oldest starts college this fall, and it was the perfect choice. Clean and spacious, three large bedrooms, a great sun room and an outdoor balcony. Each day we explored a different area of the island. Some of our top choices:

1. Rent your SUV from Unity (Brian connected us with them)- nothing better than having your vehicle delivered to you at the airport and then dropping it off in the departure lane.

2. Orient Beach was our favorite beach- we loved the water and casual restaurants- Parking was easy. Other top beaches- Cupecoy- right outside the condo and a private little beach by Little Bay. (There is public parking right next to the Belair Beach Hotel.)

3. We did 2 snorkeling trips. One with Octopus Diving- 3 out of 5 stars: The Creole Rock site is excellent. The other trip was with Captain Alan's Snorkeling- 5 out of 5 stars. A little more expensive, but well worth it. We did the 1/2 day tour and enjoyed every second. Got to see the sea turtles.

4. Croissants at Sarafinas.

5. Beachfront dinner at Grand Case, but just as delicious was a crepe stand near the parking lot.

6. Loterie Farm. My son and I did the hike and saw wild monkeys

7. Card games at night in the sun room overlooking the sea.

The internet worked, but was slow for international work. My VPN connection kept getting dropped. Don't plan on doing a lot of remote work, but who really wants to anyway?

Dawn beach- too much seaweed. Glad we were not staying there.

Philipsburg- we are not big shoppers, so this was a wasted 2 hours. Too many tourists and bad restaurants.

Unexpected memorable event: Used google maps on the cell phone while driving, and it worked fine. Occasionally it would route you through "short cuts" that you would not ordinarily plan on taking. One time a wrong turn and inability to take a U turn had us go over one of the highest points- the grade was over 15% and it felt like the SUV was going to tip over backwards. More exciting than any roller coaster- a highlight that even the teens didn't want to repeat.

We highly recommend this condo.

Owner's Response: As always, it is so good to hear that our guests enjoyed our 'home away from home' and found it to be clean, spacious and with excellent amenities. It appears that they read a number of my recommendations regarding beaches, restaurants and places to discover around both the French and Dutch sides of the Island. Orient Bay is very popular with teens and college age folks as there are many water activities to enjoy. Not so much, if you wander to the right beyond Pedro's Snack Shack as the famous Orient Naturist Club can catch some unaware! I enjoy Orient for the calm, shallow waters caused by the reef just out from the coast. Glad their inquiring minds and spirits led them to do some adventurous snorkeling too. Dwane at Unity Car Rental is a great guy, and his manner of treating his clients sets him apart from the others. It is not unusual to be at the Ocean Club an hour earlier than if you booked with the other agencies that take you in a van to their off-site location, then leave you standing in line and go through the paperwork then wait for your vehicle! A first for me is to hear of someone using Google maps on their smartphone to navigate around the island. Too bad that Google wasn't around when Columbus 'discovered' St. Martin/Sint Maarten and the Carib natives.

Lovely apartment, lovely owner

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I really enjoyed our time here. It's an embarrassment of riches to have not one spectacular deck, but two to hang out on. We spent almost every evening on the one off the living room having a drink and watching the sunset (but put some bug spray on at this time just to ward off those skeeters, please!). The owner is kind, communicative, and reasonable. Someone else on here mentioned the current of the local beach, and I agree that it's quite strong, so if you're looking for one to just lazily float in I'd suggest driving elsewhere. There is a decent grocery store down the way that even has a fair bit of gluten free offerings, which came as a huge shock to me. The Green Monkey is awesome for breakfast and/or drinks (it was off-season I can't speak about lunch or dinner as it was closed) - ask for Marjorie, she's from Texas and is just the loveliest. There are also some great restaurants down by the grocery store which are kinda/sorta walkable, but because there are no sidewalks it's a little wonky to do so as all SXM streets are narrow and this particular part of the road is not well lit at night. Very easily driveable (as in 2-3 minutes). The mall nearby (the Blue or something?) is alright - clean and modern with a couple good restaurants on the outside, but the inside seems a little vacant...maybe it was the time of year or maybe they don't have enough tenants. This latter info is kind of unnecessary I suppose, but when I read reviews I like to have a good idea as to what to expect. There is no question about loving the apt - you'll love the comfort of it and the balconies, the balconies, the balconies.....did I mention the balconies?

Owner's Response: We are so glad that you found the balconies some of the best spots to spend your relaxing vacation time! I have often said that the Sunset Balcony is my 'favorite room' in the penthouse. Extra special when you catch the "Green Flash" but still great any evening. The beach in front of The Ocean Club Resort can have its calm moments, then the next day you can see a dozen or more surfers catching the waves! I am not as steady on the legs as I was thirty years ago when I discovered the beaches along the Cliffs of Cupecoy, and now I prefer either Mullet Bay or Baie Rogue (Red Bay) on the French side about two miles from our resort. It is a great idea to rent a car so that you can discover the entire island if it is your first trip to SXM, or handy to go back to your favorite haunts. (There is covered, dedicated parking for our guests at the base of the O C Tower.) Across the road from us is The Blue Mall which has never met its potential as a day-trip with busloads full of cruise bunnies shoppers, but the recent news is encouraging in that the Marriott Hotel chain has acquired the third and fourth floors of the Mall to convert it into a JW Marriott Four Star hotel. As with many island nations, only time will tell ~ BTW, I so appreciate these folks and their love of the balconies, and it was said so poetically stated.

Honeymoon Haven

  • 5 of 5

We were delighted with the location of this condo! Very convienient to airport, markets, beach, and shopping. It is impecably clean and has every ammenity that any traveler could need. The views are spectacular! We loved both the balconys as well as the view from the kitchen/living area.

Each day we adventured more into the island--and came to love it more each day. A car would be a must to see the island, but I can imagine a week not leaving the property as well. We found amazing dining in the local restaurants. We visited many of the beaches--all with a bit of unique flavor and took a day trip into Aguilla---all very easy destinations from the condo location. The ocean front area is a special very private escape.

The Ocean Club staff was very friendly and helpful. We especially enjoyed the local poolside cafe.

We are so grateful to the owners for sharing this paradise--and look forward to a return visit! Thank you!

Owner's Response: WOW, it appears the honeymooners liked our penthouse for its views, location and ambience! They covered a lot of territory while on the Island during their 9 days including what we always enjoy ~ a day trip to the former English colony of Anguilla. The coral beach at Upper Shoal Bay has been recognized by the National Geographic as one of the top twelve beaches in the world! From the many reviews we have received often there are kudos for the kind and efficient staff at The Ocean Club and I imagine should a potential guest reading this review were to choose to stay at our "island home" they would agree.

Up Up and Away Bombay and St. Marteen

  • 5 of 5

I arrived in SXM with an SUV awaiting, drove to the penthouse, parked, took the elevator to the fourth floor and entered a beautifully appointed hallway, dropped my luggage in my room, and promptly took a shower. Great water pressure, that’s a must. After the shower I crawled into bed, adjusted the remote A/C and instantly fell asleep.

I awoke from a sound sleep, fab mattress, uber soft sheets, and proceeded to the kitchen to prepare my morning tea. I ventured onto the private penthouse balcony and slipped into a comfy lounge chair, sipped my cup of tea with the company of serenity, solitude, and the rhythmic sound of the ocean waves that reached the private beach below.

The penthouse is on the fourth floor with a view to kill. Not only does it have three bedrooms and two and a half baths; one is located in the master suite, the second shared by the other bedrooms, and the half bath which is conveniently set off of the main living space. Additionally, the master suite has its’ own private balcony. Balcony number two can be shared by all, especially at sunset.

The kitchen is appointed with the needs to prepare fine dining. The owners have a liquor cabinet and they only ask that you replace what you’ve enjoyed. I left you some Bombay.

Ah, but you have finished your book and it’s time to plan some meals.

Local grocery stores, both French and Dutch are gloriously stocked. My personal favorites are Carrefour (Dutch side) and Simply Markets (French Side). But you also have the option to order groceries online at Stop N Drop Grocery SXM and they deliver, WOW!

The penthouse owners will arrange a rental car for your convenience of travel around the island during your stay.

A driving tour is a must. When you dine out choose Sarafina’s for breakfast, Rosemary’s for lunch, and for dinner Le Delight Bistro. At the Bistro you can order tapas for dinner and enjoy a variety. My first time eating escargot and now I have another vice.

Swimming in the ocean @ your choice of 37 beaches is a must! The water temperature at the end of May is perfect.

Venture on the road behind the Westin at Dawn Beach to see monkeys in the wild. Keep your windows up and beware of the treacherous road surface, SUVs only please.

Then return to the penthouse, relax, watch TV, DVDs, listen to music, explore the art throughout the penthouse, and end your day on the balcony , where we started, with a Bombay and Tonic. Up Up and away, Bombay🌞

Owner's Response: Beth, It is great that you enjoyed your first time on the island and that you found our penthouse to your liking. The Grande Marche` on Union Road on the Dutch side very close to the French border is now Carrefour, and, though the owners are the same, the improvements in the supermarket are significant. There is a Parisian staff of five overseeing the produce, meats, dairy, wines, Grab and Go and baked goods. I was not aware of the wild monkeys on the island, and I have been visiting Sint Maarten annually since the mid-80s, and have owned property since 1988. It must have been quite a sight. It sounds like you began the tour driving into the French side (just 1/8th of a mile from The Ocean Club) and went clockwise through the Lowlands to Marigot, Grand Case, Orleans, Philipsburg, Simpson Bay, Maho, Mullet Bay and back to Cupecoy Village. Great way to get a feel of life on a volcanic rock ~ Your dining experiences may have been encouraged by some of our recommendations in our guest binder. It appears you agree with The Delight Bistro recommendation, and Sarafina, the French bakery and pastry shop along the old port of Marigot as it ranks right up there with the Sunset Bar at the end of the airport runway. Both are moments not to be missed!

Very nice and comfortable. penthouse

  • 5 of 5

Very nice Stayed 4-30-16 for one week and enjoyed every minute. Very comfortable and very good location. The apartment had every thing you would need during your stay. Staff was kind and helpful. Both decks had beautiful views, which we spent a lot of time enjoying the views of the sea and the sunsets. The Green Monkey was closed for the summer, so we could not enjoy the famous ribs and steak nights. We would return and stay at this apartment in the future without question.

Owner's Response: We are always pleased to hear that more guests found our penthouse and the two balconies very relaxing, and the staff attentive and kind, as do we. It is absolutely true that our Sunset Balcony presents possibly the best view from Sint Maarten/St. Martin of the famous "Green Flash" as they happen right at Sunset as the Sun disappears! They occur because the atmosphere can cause the light from the Sun to separate into different colors. It was unfortunate that The Green Monkey was closed, though they are still offering breakfast daily until they re-open full-time in the Fall. Like all our past guests we certainly welcome them back, and they have come! Brian 5/25/2016

What a view!

  • 5 of 5

I had the great good fortune to be able to spend 4 nights in the Penthouse unit, visiting with the owner Brian. It’s a very spacious unit with very comfortable and welcoming décor and amenities. I stayed I the king bedroom (not the Master). It’s spacious with a good sized closet and a dresser with lots of drawers. Each bedroom has its own AC controls, which is nice. The living, dining, kitchen space is all open and quite large. Every convenience you could want is provided. The best attributes are the views. It’s on the 4ht 4 overlooking the ocean. There are two very large balconies and a huge window in-between. Laying on the balcony you can listen to the surf breaking on the beach below. It’s a very short walk from the property to the Cupecoy Beach and the Blue Mall is across the street. It’s a quick drive to Marigot or Phillipsburg. It’s a great property in a great location. I can’t recommend it more highly.

Owner's Response: This was our friend's first look at the Penthouse in over two years as there was a long term lease from early 2014 until last September. Much has been done with the overall 'freshening up' of the property, both from maintenance and updates, to a general increase in the relaxing feel brought on by the change in décor.' Admiring the awesome views found across the entire 50' expanse of the Penthouse to the Caribbean, be it from the Sunrise Balcony, the Dining/Sunroom or the Sunset Balcony truly are some of the best attributes of "Palme d `Or" Penthouse, aka The Coconut Palm Penthouse!

Direct access to the beach from our penthouse within The Ocean Club resort, immediately beyond the resort is additional access to Cupecoy Beach and its two additional areas, four other beaches within three miles, Mullet Bay is south of Cupecoy Beach, then Maho Beach where the big tourist attraction is the planes coming in just over your head and watching the tide reverse as they take off, then on the way to Marigot on the French side there is Baie Longue (Long Bay) next to the Belmond - La Samanna Resort, and Baie Rougue (Red Bay) further along the road toward Marigot.

We have recently had cable installed in the penthouse with all the primary US, Canadian, French, Spanish and BBC stations. Cable is available in the Great Room, the MBR and White Bedrooms.

Just down toward the French border is Porto Cupecoy with many restaurants and a "Gourmet Marche`" grocery. A bit on the expensive side, but handy to get started after you arrive. Later, past the airport take the new bridge over the Lagoon then turn right onto Union Road to shop at the Carrefour Market which has all you need, including very good Duty Free prices on liquor and wine.
