Bakers Flat Cottages on Deua River

Bedrooms 2
Property type house
Minimum Stay 1 - 2 nights

About the property

At Bakers Flat Cottages the Big House is the perfect place for a restful stay in the bush without the distraction of TV and technology. It’s a special place for people who love nature and want a getaway for peace and relaxation. Nothing to do but watch the animals and birds, bushwalk, swim, read, eat, sleep and enjoy time together with your partner and family.

We pride ourselves in having good quality beds and bedding, clean and comfortable houses, and very well appointed kitchens. BYO linen (linen hire available if required)

The Big House comfortably sleeps up to 5 people in two bedrooms each with ensuite bathroom - One room with double bed plus single bed, and one queen bed room. There is an additional very comfortable firm double sofa bed in the living room, a sturdy single roll out bed and childrens camp bed (sleeps six adults plus a couple of kids OK).

The kitchen is generously appointed with a large assortment of pots and pans, utensils, gadgets, bowls, serving dishes, baking pans, pans for the outside fire (including camp oven) etc. It has a gas stovetop and oven, and a 280L gas fridge/freezer. The dining table comfortably seats six people and there is a chaise lounge/sofa to relax on around the wood heater at night.

There is a radio, CD player and bluetooth stereo so you can listen to music from your phone. Games, books and puzzles supplied will keep you occupied inside.

The large outside lawn is quite a distance from the road and the river so it’s nice and safe to let the kids play there. The river is about an 80 m stroll from the house, and you can swim and relax beside it in the shade of the Casuarina trees. The Deua National Park bounds all sides of the property so there’s lots of exploring to do around the bush and the river. You might like to bring your mountain bikes and take a ride along the road to Moruya. It’s safe and flat for quite a few kms so works well with kids. Then you can relax around the open fire/bbq at night.

If you are into fishing, apparently Australian Bass can be caught in the river. Just stroll down to the big swimming hole 100m downstream and see how you go. Platypus have also been seen in the river here.

The Cottages at Bakers Flat are remote and off grid, so there are no powerpoints for hair dryers, TV etc. There are cigarette lighter sockets in the house for charging cameras, phones and small devices. Just bring your devices charging leads you use in the car, and they will work inside the house.

Whilst this might sound challenging at first, people rave about how fabulous it was to spend time at the cottages and just enjoy swimming, reading, relaxing an being with family and friends without the interruption of technology.

CPAP Machine / Hearing aids

Should you require 240V power to charge any devices such as hearing aids or to run a CPAP machine, an inverter can be supplied to do this, free of charge on request. The inverter allows you to plug your machine into a power point.

Mobile Phone reception / telephone

Mobile phone reception is variable around the property. You will always be able to send and receive texts, sometimes be able to have a conversation, and with patience, eventually be able to download emails. You will not be able to roam the internet. There is a landline telephone at the property for emergency use only, so whilst you are remote from technology, you are only a phone call away from help.

Things to do locally

There's lots to do in the area, but most people find that once they get to the cottages, they just don't want to leave. The beach at Moruya is a relaxing 45 minute drive away. Moruya is good for shopping with boutique and gourmet stores as well as supermarkets etc. It also has Tuesday Farmers Markets and Saturday Markets. South of Moruya is the historic village of Central Tilba. North is Batemans Bay and wonderful Mogo Zoo. Travel west to see the grand buildings in the historic town of Braidwood. It's an hours drive away and has shopping, great food and history tours. Alternately, take a drive and bushwalk to Marble Arch and the Big Hole or to Monga National Park to walk amongst the Gondwana remnant forest. However once people arrive, they tend not to leave, as the pure relaxation value of being at the cottages is hard to beat.

The Big House is easily accessible by wheelchair from the carpark into the main living/dining area. Doors to the bedrooms are standard size. The house has a few small lips on doorways of around 5cm – one on the front door and also into the bathrooms. Other than this it is flat inside, with tiled floors throughout. People with limited walking ability find it very easy to navigate around the inside of the house. Please note there are no hand rails in the bathrooms, and a wheelchair would not be very difficult to manoeuvre in the bathrooms. There is a small lip into the shower cubicle, which has a smallish opening with a shower curtain. A wheelchair can easily navigate the flat lawn from the house to the outdoor fire/BBQ and dining table.

To get to the river requires an 80m stroll down two inclines of about 45 degrees with easy to use bush steps to break up the grade. It is not suitable for people who are challenged by uneven pathways, however there is a lovely table just at the top of the pathway so if the river is not accessible for you, you can sit at the table and enjoy listening to the fun down at the river. It’s just a shout away.

Need even more beds?

In addition to the Big House there is a lovely mud brick early settlers cottage on the property which sleeps one couple in a double bed. It is also fully self-contained with ensuite bathroom. The cottages are private and secluded from each other with separate entrances and separate access to the river. If you wish to rent both for your group, they are just a short stroll (80m) from each other along a bush track. The Little Cottage can be booked on request along with the Big House.

Minimum fees apply for advance bookings as follows:

Weekends: Two night stay fee

Long Weekends: Three night stay fee

Easter and weekends with two public holidays adjoining: Four night stay fee.

Minimum stays may be negotiable for last minute or mid-week bookings.
