About John Wallace

We fell in love with Kerry and Kenmare in particular in 1990 and spent the following 12 years trying to find the site to build our holiday cottage. It took us longer than expected but we love the house and its location so close to Kenmare! We hope you agree!

John Wallace purchased this cottage in 2003

Why John Wallace chose Ireland

We love the natural stone finish and warmth that the cottage has. With the new extension of a sitting room and guest bathroom we now have all the space that a family or couple could want for their vacation in Kenmare. An open fireplace and now a stove are just wonderful to light and sit in chatting and talking about the days adventures while sipping a glass of wine!

What makes this cottage unique

This cottage is in a large garden of about two acres, the Cleady River flows to the rear and sounds so relaxing when sitting on the patio at the end of a busy day sightseeing! With wi-fi, you can investigate where to visit on the following day or catch up with emails. The kitchen is equipped to a very high standard with all the equipment needed to prepare your own gastronomic feast - all you need are the ingredients and ability! We also have a small safe for storing your valuables.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We enjoyed Kenmare and especially your cottage very much. We loved sitting at the table, playing cards and looking out into the garden. In the evening it was very romantic to sit in the sofa with all the candles. And the kitchen was so well equipped. My son loved the book “Chicken licken”, which we found in the bedroom. We also enjoyed the cds.

The landscape was great, we took a lot of photos. The highlight for the children was watching the seals when we did a boat-trip.

Cleady River Cottage-great family location

  • 5 of 5

Three generations of my family want to extend our gratitude to you for our wonderful vacation at Cleady River Cottage this August. We truly enjoyed this spacious and comfortable vacation home. The pictures you provided do not do justice to the lovely setting and exceptional accomodations! We used the cottage as our home base as we explored Kenmare, the beautiful Ring of Kerry and the breathtaking West Cork seaside. Each evening we gathered on the deck or by the fireplace to share our day's adventures and then slept to the sound of the river. Our two-year old grandaughter had a wonderful time running in the large and beautifully landscaped yard and playing with the toys that were so graciously provided. The well-appointed kitchen allowed us to enjoy leisurely family breakfasts and having a washer and dryer on the premises just added to our comfort. The owner and the caretaker were exceptionally responsive to all of our needs and inquiries; they simplified the process for both renting and accessing the cottage and they continue to respond to our correspondences now that we have returned home. This was our first Irish vacation but we look forward to returning to Ireland and to Cleady cottage again. Thank you for memories that will last a lifetime!

Owner's Response: As always we are delighted to hear that another family has enjoyed a wonderful holiday in our cottage! I'll have to perfect my photography skills and put some better pictures up as Maureen informs me that they don't do the cottage justice! At least our people skills don't need updating yet and we're very pleased that the Maureen, Ed and their family found our cottage as delightful as we do.

WOW!!!! quiet luxury

  • 5 of 5

Easy arrangements with John. The property exceeded any expectations we had. A tree lined lane and a gurgling river introduced us to this peaceful countryside retreat . Amenities well above the usual standard (Bose, satellite TV, very well equipped kitchen), space for all and wonderfully comfy beds. It was 5 minutes to Kenmare, a delightful town on the Ring of Kerry. We debated coming back here -or staying longer-- even though we had 'done County Kerry'. A five star property!!

Great stay!

  • 5 of 5

Great property in the Ring of Kerry area. Very well-built and appointed cottage comfortable for 2 couples (& 1 could have a couple kids!). Only 5 min drive to the town of Kenmare which has some wonderful dining options. Very well situated for day trips on all the beautiful peninsulas and even to Cork or Kinsale. Nice 2 acre grounds provide lots of seclusion as well as walking opportunities. Cottage is very cozy & quiet - would stay there again in a heartbeat!

Comfortable cottage set in peaceful surroundings

  • 5 of 5

This was our first stay at Cleady river cottage and found the cottage as described on brochure and recommended by other travellers. The cottage was found clean and comfortable , furnished to a high standard, lots of living space and the new extension is perfect to relax and end your day.

Kenmare is lively with shops, restaurants and bars supplying good food and music. On nights you self cater there is an Aldi, just past the filling station.

Cottage location is ideal. Its central for access to the 3 peninsula's, national park and Glengarriff. Dingle and fungi the dolphin is just over an hour and worth a visit for Inch beach and lunch in one of the many pubs and restaurants by the harbour.

We found the area welcoming for tourists and will be a place where we will return to in future years with Cleady river cottage being our ideal base.

Comfortable cottage set in a quiet location

  • 4 of 5

Party of 6 adults in Kenmare for a week. Cottage was an ideal base to explore the beautiful surrounding countryside. Kenmare has everything you may need Shops Bar/food, restaurants to suit every budget. Good reliable taxi service into town at 2 Euro a head from Dennis Griffin 0876147222.He knows the location.

The cottage itself is comfortable, spacious, tidy gardens and would suit many types of traveller. Overall taking cottage and location into account it would have to be rated as a must stay (not to be overlooked) A perfect stay for all of us.
