Eco Cabin in remote Caribbean Woodlands

Bedrooms 1
Half Baths1
Space 624 sq ft
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

1 bedroom cabin with kitchen and bathroom, solar power and collected rain water

The cottage is Caribbean style, its walls covered in wooden shingles, with shuttered windows and a large open deck. It is tucked away in a remote and wooded valley. It is a short walk from the car parking area to the cabin - a narrow path covered in bamboo leaves. There is a patio area with an outside table and a BBQ. The kitchen is open sided, birds flying through! A three burner stove and under counter gas fridge. There is everything you would need from espresso coffee maker to knife sharpener! The pots and pans hang on the wall. The cabin is totally eco and is powered with solar energy, the sockets are 110v USA with a 1000 watt inverter. All the water is rain water. The shower (which gets very hot ) is open to the woods, the side tactfully comes to chest height! The bedroom is large with windows on 3 sides. The door on the 4th side leads Narnia like through the wardrobe to the kitchen and on to the bathroom. From the netted four poster bed, you look through balcony and garden to the hills covered in lemon grass. There are comfy chairs and a hammock on the balcony, perfect for a lounge with a book (there is a selection) and a glass of wine...or two! The cottage has a garden and teak lounge chairs for you to watch the stars or sunbathe... Although we are in this quiet and hidden valley it is only a rather lovely short drive down Fig Tree Drive ( also known as the Rain Forest Road), to the nearest beach at Carlisle Bay. Beyond Carlisle Bay are some of the best beaches in Antigua laid out before you along the West Coast, the side with the Caribbean sea.

About Louise Sandiford

I am from England originally, but have been living in the Caribbean for 30 years.

I run a Production Service Company which assists film makers and photograhers who come into the Caribbean Region. I live at Tranquil Farm with my daughter, dogs, ducks and chickens! I love to garden, I love to read. I enjoy the quiet and peace of my surroundings.

Why Louise Sandiford chose Saint Mary

There are not many places that are this peaceful - if one car passes down the road during the day, its unusual. The sound of the birds and the leaves in the trees are the most prominent sounds - along the odd squeaks of the bamboo groaning in the wind and sounding like an old sailing ship!

Actually I should add a bit about the local wildlife noises - the odd donkey and at night the crickets and tree frogs take over.

What makes this cabin unique

Tranquil Farm has always had this name, the farmhouse is about 100 years old now - and the name still fits it perfectly. The farm house and cottage sit on a small hill inside a bigger valley. The view down the valley is over the top of mango trees and across the valley at the surrounding hills covered in lemon grass.

I first saw the house when looking for a location for filming, it was love at first sight - a small wooden farm house hidden in a circle of trees. It was unique then, and even more so now. I have lived here now for 22 years, and I still love it. It is very rare now to find a place that is so quiet and where nature seems to seep through the doors, or rather fly through the window!

Guestbook comments from the owner

This trip ended up being so much more than a honeymoon or holiday to us and that was very much made possible by Louise and her cottages. The many gifts that the land and space offer make either cottage the perfect setting to experience Antigua. The open space allows nature to pass through, birds, lizards and the occasional sound of a donkey in the distance. Both cottages have screens on the windows to keep your bedroom mozzie free. (this is not the case with all rentals on the island, but incredibly important!) the outdoor showers are heavenly and a huge plus in the experience. The kitchen is well equipped and allowed us to cook several meals throughout our stay which helped with the cost of the trip. And please, please don't miss out on taking a nap in the hammock! The only thing more fabulous than this hidden gem is Louise herself. She thought of every detail to make our stay a memorable one. From the wine and cheese in the fridge to the suggestions of destinations and local views. She is a knowledgable resource about the area and the locals. She has a local phone for you to use which proved helpful while exploring the island. Take advantage of the location of the cottage and get to know some of the businesses around the corner. Stop by the zip lining operation on fig tree Drive and say hello to the staff, grab a piña colada and sign up for a tour! Buy some local fruit at the supermarkets on the way to English harbor. Watch the sunset from Shirley Heights. Soak in the panoramic views. Get to know the locals, they are what make this island great! Tranquil farms was the perfect backdrop to our Antiguan adventure. Our experience was so much fuller because of Louise, her home, our discussions and the people we met along the way. We can't wait to see you all again, cheers!

Please remember we are using only rain water, and in the dry season which runs from January - June we need to be thoughtful about this.

Some people at first find the sound of the tropics at night rather loud, the tree frogs and crickets - you may want to bring ear plugs for your first night until you get used to the sounds.

Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We don't usually write reviews of places we've stayed. Think it is because of the let down at the end of a vacation, but mostly I think it is because I won't take the time. Tranquil Farm is the exception. My wife and I spent 2 weeks at Louise's cottage, such a wonderful home away from home. Everything you need for your daily outings, including: a beach bag, cooler, and some super comfy flashy beach chairs. Exceptional Island advice is also available from your hostess if requested. Gonna miss our daily run/walks with Ruby and Scabbers, such wonderful canine companions. Thank you Louise, our most gracious hostess, for such a fun, adventure filled, truly memorable vacation on your beautiful island.

P.S. One day we hope to return to stay in your most exotic scenic new cottage on the hill.

Fabulous time!

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is exactly as pictured. Perfect for those wanting a getaway from the hustle and bustle of a resort. It is clean and has all one needs for an indoor/outdoor camping-like adventure. We loved it. And the beaches were not too far away. Louise, the owner, is a most gracious lady and made sure we were comfortable. Yes, we needed an SUV to get there as the road leading to the cottage is quite rocky and uneven. We were greeted by 3 large, loving dogs. Geckos abound along with many beautiful friendly birds. We most likely will return as we are now endeared to this place. The local people are quite friendly and helpful, also. Thank you, Louise!

Peaceful and Perfect

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time I have stayed with Louise and I love it. She is a great host and the cottage is adorable with everything you would need. It is a really nice alternative to a beach location and still easy to get to all the other parts of the island by car. There are some lovely walks down country lanes and a few willing dogs if you want the company. I would definitely return and stay here again

Why stay elsewhere?

  • 5 of 5

While searching for a place to stay during our trip to Antigua, I had several criteria in mind. I'd like to list them and explain how Tranquil Farm met the criteria, revealed new criteria we hadn't thought of, and exceeded our expectations.

We needed to get away from everything! The property offers seclusion without being frustratingly difficult to reach. The central location is ideal for people looking to explore the island. The driveway is really fun to traverse, just make sure you rent a vehicle with some ground clearance!

We wanted peace and a certain kind of quiet! The property is in the rainforest, so quiet nights aren't really an option. However, the noises we sought to and did in fact hear (frogs insects and birds) in the candlelight will put you in a trance while you lie in the four poster under the mosquito netting with the windows up and balancing a cold rum punch on your belly.

We wanted simplicity! Tranquil Farm is completely "off the grid" and can be as primitive as you want it to be. The cottage has lots of windows and the climate is so perfect that air con isn't necessary. There's a continer of fresh water and a charcoal brazier for cooking. There are also lots of candles and kerosene lamps. Not feeling so primitive? There's solar powered LED lighting, a fan, a radio, bedside lamps, wifi, two sinks, a real toilet, well stocked fridge (fed two for nearly a week) and very hot water in the outdoor shower.

The one thing we didn't expect was The owner herself. One of our fondest memories of the trip was getting to know her. We spent hours on our day of departure chatting and drinking delicious coffee. She met our every need as guests and more. She's extremely interesting and has a lot to offer in the way of Caribbean travel advice.

If you're going to Antigua, do yourself a favor and stay at Tranquil Farm. During the long flight home you'll enrapture your fellow passengers with the adventures you're likely to have had in choosing the type of trip travelers who'll find Tranquil Farm appealing. If you want an interesting trip, please make this your home base. The only thing you'll regret is having to leave!

Owner's Response: I usually leave people alone when they are in the cottage - presuming everyone would like as much privacy as possible, so it was lovely that you came by and we had a chance to get to know you both. As to that review you wrote - well what can I say but THANK YOU !

Absolutely amazing

  • 5 of 5

This was the most wonderful experience and a fantastic place to stay. Tranquillity Farm says it all. Just 15 mins from the bustling harbour or main town, yet once on the property the world can be a million miles away.

Waking to the sounds of nature, sitting in the hammock with my freshly brewed coffee and my kindle, fantastic outside shower, this is luxury in its purest form - I absolutely loved it!

Favorite accommodation in the Caribbean

  • 5 of 5

We have been to several Caribbean islands, and Louise's cabin in the woods is by far our favorite place we have stayed. It is more charming than the posted images, if that is possible. Louise couldn't have been more welcoming or helpful. While a 4-wheel drive is a necessity and the location is off the beaten track, it is well worth the extra effort to find this little piece of heaven. It is a destination itself--great local walks (with or without her very friendly and well-behaved dogs) and a chance to see a part of the island most visitors don't. The outdoor shower feels very private and has the best hot water. The flush toilet, electric lights, and gas-powered refrigerator all make you forget how eco it really is. While somewhat out-of-the-way, the cabin is closer to most of the island's more interesting attractions than is, for example, Dickenson Bay, where we had previously stayed. Don't miss Wallings Dam and walking to the top of the hill for a view of Guadaloupe and Montserrat. And Rendezvous Bay Beach is lovely (although, as remote as it is by car--again 4-wheel drive is necessary!--people boat over from Falmouth Harbour and English Bay, so don't expect to be alone). I miss Louise and the dogs and the birds and the cabin and the woods and the entire experience. I want to go back!

Car: necessary

The cottage is in the countryside, in a peaceful valley with no other houses in sight. There are country walks from the cottage and guided rainforest tours nearby. Its a short drive the beaches, the West Coast Caribbean side beaches have the most amazingly blue water colour and white white sand. These are about 20 minutes away. South there is Rendezvous Beach, a long wonderful beach with no buildings,( so take a picnic). We are very close to Wallings Dam, where there paths through the woods up over the hills and down to Rendezvous Beach, this is a long hike so best guided!

East, there is Half Moon Bay, with the wilder waters of the Atlantic being slightly tamed as they enter the cove. We are centrally located in Antigua, which is only 10 miles by 12 miles - so never far to any coast or anywhere!

Northwards near the airport on the East and Atlantic coast at Jabberwock Beach there is kite boarding and wind surfing. South again there is English Harbour and Nelsons Dockyard for sailing and sitting in the cafes and watching the boats and the world in general go by, or for evenings with lots of restaurants and bars!

A 4 x 4 is best to get around in Antigua, and it is essential for getting to this remote cottage.
