Tan Terfyn - between lake, forest and beach

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 1 - 5 nights

About the property

Tan Terfyn has two double bedrooms and a third room with bunks. It has been completely renovated and has a modern bath/shower room, convenient kitchen and comfy living area with sofas, wood stove and TV. At the back there is a fully fenced patio area with BBQ and patio table and chairs which looks out into Murramarang National Park.

Visitors say the house is like the TARDIS - apparently small from the outside but much larger on the inside!

Between the beach, Murramarang Park and Durras Lake

Pronounced "tanterafin", Tan Terfyn is welsh for "up to the edge" or "as far as the boundary" and that sums up this location. You are on the edge of the Muuramarang National Park but also by the banks of the fascinating Durras Lake and close to beautiful Durras Beach.

Carry your surf boards and boogie boards down to the beach for hours of fun. Or walk south along the beach to Durras Village where you will find a handy General Store with supplies, pizza and coffee. In you decide to walk north along the beach you will enjoy miles and miles of practically deserted coastline, rocky headlands and, if you walk far enough, the renowned beaches at Pebbly Beach and Pretty Beach.

Serious walkers can hike along the beach and then take trails to the peak of Mount Durras for a real feel of achievement and a fantastic view.

Dog owners will appreciate that although dogs are not allowed in the national park or on the northern beaches, all the beach south from here to Durras Village is an off-lead area 24 hours per day.

Durras Lake

Durras Lake is completely enclosed within Murramarang National Park and at 6kms long, deceptively large. There is a boat slip at the end of the street for serious fishermen who want to launch into the lake. But at the moment the recent rains have left the lake wonderfully full and a canoe as the best way to explore its secret places. There is a canoe rental company just up the street or you can bring your own.

Don't miss seeing the 'race' where Durras Lake has recently broken through the beach to join the ocean. This is particularly exciting at high tide. For years you could walk along the beach from South Durras to North Durras and beyond - now you need to be ready to swim the lake entrance channel!

Ok and nothing else

  • 2 of 5

House is conveniently located at South Durras and is very important for dog owners like ourselves; however the house lacked ventilation and one bedroom had no fan. It is suitable for two adults and not much more.

Essential services did not work well - which has been overlooked and owners ought to rectify these things.

I have been restrained in writing this review by the guidelines but I would not recommend the house to anybody I know.

Owner's Response: Just for the record: only problem during the stay was the visitor noted a leak from the water pump. A plumber came the same day and fixed the leak. This unforeseeable problem make the visitor extremely unhappy for which I am sorry.

Nature escape

  • 5 of 5

The house is surprisingly spacious, has a well equipped kitchen, a modern bathroom and is very clean.

The only annoying thing was the non functional fly screen door to the backyard area.

The location is great, loved the kangaroos behind the backyard.

We would have loved to stay here longer.

5 nights. House was surprisingly cool during hot weather. Take everything as there are no shops (caravan park has ice creams n meagre supplies). Dog friendly. Very friendly locals. Kayaking on lake is $70 a double, perfect when beach is too windy.
