Magnolia Cottage, quiet and comfy

Bedrooms 2
Property type house

About the property

Easy to find, easy to park, Magnolia Cottage is in a very central yet very quiet location, only 1km from the Australian War Memorial, and a short drive to the Capital's tourist attractions.

Fully equipped and family and pet friendly, Magnolia Cottage is a heritage-listed weatherboard two-bedroom home set in established gardens, on a quiet residential street. Built in in the late 1920s, with wide Baltic pine floor boards, high ceilings, cedar picture rails, and original sash windows throughout, this cottage is an original alternative accommodation for your Canberra short or long stay.

Magnolia Cottage has two bedrooms - queen bed in one, 2 singles (electric blankets) and large convertible cot in the other, with a day bed in the enclosed front verandah. The house can sleep 4 comfortably, and up to 6-7 if you like it cozy. Linen is provided for each booked person.

The fully equipped kitchen has oven, microwave, dishwasher, large fridge/freezer, tea and coffee facilities, quality crockery and cutlery. I provide some cooking basics, plus simple selection of Australian tea, coffee, biscuits, cereal and milk.

The laundry has a front loader washing machine, tumble dryer and drying racks, ironing board and steam iron. I provide washing powder. There's an original 'Hills Hoist' clothes line and pegs out back too.

The cottage's fully sound-insulated internal and external walls reduce sound transmission between rooms making for a quiet night's sleep, reduced heat gain in summer and heat loss or drafts in winter.

Heating is by programable gas convection heater in the sitting room, oil-filled column radiators for the bedrooms, Tastic and heated towel rail in the bathroom.

Cooling by free-standing fans for bedrooms, portable air conditioner for sitting room with the cooling effect flowing throughout. External passive cooling by natural hessian drop shading in summer and keeping curtains closed during the day to reduce heat gain.

The front garden is a riot of colour in spring, with its feature magnolia tree, azaleas, camellias, and borders chock full of herbs and flowering bulbs. It gets a bit shabby as the bulbs dry off, and the privat and pyracantha hedge grows out and bursts into flower, followed by summer colour and scent from the roses, honeysuckle and sweet williams. Later in summer we have a few cherries, apricots, pears and apples to pick (remember to leave some for the next guests), as well as herbs and rhubarb.

The securely fenced pet friendly back yard has space for kids and pets to run around with shady spots for chilling out, plus fledgling espalier fruit trees - peaches, cherry plums, plums, greengage, blackberries, raspberries, all starting to yield herb and vegetable gardens with tomatoes, silver beet, lettuce, depending on the season and weather. The back yard also has its iconic Hills Hoist. See my facebook page for what's ready for picking, plucking, browsing and when!

A bitumen drive links front to back giving sufficient hard standing for off road parking for several cars, trailer, caravan for those on the move.

Corroboree Park, with its tennis & basketball courts, climbing frames, swings, slides and free barbecue is just over the quiet road.

Out and about

Nearby you'll find a great range of restaurants, pubs and clubs located minutes away in Ainslie, Braddon, Civic and Dickson. The new and vibrant Braddon precinct is only a 10-15 minute walk away. However, if you prefer to cater for yourselves, the wonderful local Ainslie IGA can supply all your shopping needs from fresh veg, goat chops to free range cooked chook, local made breads and dips.

Magnolia Cottage is fantastically placed for exploring Canberra and surrounds. Take an orientation trip up Mount Ainslie for the iconic view over the war memorial and Anzac Parade to Parliament House and the Brindabellas.

Ainslie is a great base for visiting Canberra's fabulous National institutions - Parliament House, National Art Gallery, Questacon, National Library, Australian War Memorial, the Mint, National Archives, Australian National Botanic Gardens, the AIS and Canberra Zoo and Aquarium. Tour the embassies, visit Canberra's local museums, galleries, theatre, restaurants and cafes. Cycle, segway or walk around Lake Burley Griffin.

Slightly further afield, a short and easy drive away: wine tasting drives for Canberra cool climate wineries, spend time at the dinosaur museum, Cockington Green, the Arboretum, Tidbinbilla space tracking centre, Tidbinbilla nature park, and lots of nature reserves and hilltops for bush walking and kangaroo spotting.

Well behaved pets are welcome, and are allowed inside the sun room, kitchen and sitting room. Pets are NOT allowed on the furniture or in the bedrooms. I provide some old sheets and towels for you to use for your pet/s in the sun room (they are in the drawer in the sunroom cabinet). Please feed pets outside or in the sun room - from previous guests feedback - NOT in the kitchen or elsewhere in the house please. Dog water bowls are located under taps for use outside.

The large back garden is securely fenced (fences are 1.2-1.8m) with lots of running around space and some dog toys (earlier guests dependent). I have provided a clam paddling pool for dogs to cool off in (please empty it on departure). I have installed a dog poo composter - to make disposal of droppings easy for you- to pick up after your pet, as all of us responsible pet owners try to do! Do not bag the droppings- it's easy to just use a little compost or grass clippings and the spade (which should be next to the composter).

Smoking is allowed outside in the garden if you wish. Smoking is not allowed inside. You will need to pick up, bag, and bin all butts and associated waste.

Charming, relaxing and close to everything

  • 4 of 5

Comfortable cottage with lovely heritage features and mod cons as well. The local shops at Ainslie include one of the best IGAs ever and a great bottle shop with a good selection of local wines. The back yard is secure and was great for our two large dogs who enjoyed sprawling on the lawn in the sun. We enjoyed staying here very much and would come again.

Lovely homely and comfy house

  • 4 of 5

Great heritage house close to the city centre of Canberra. Very comfy accommodation with all that you need for a short stay - a home away from home. Our dogs loved exploring the big back garden and they were OK inside the main part of the house as it was like a normal house for them and they like a holiday too. The house was close enough for us to see the New Year's Eve fireworks display which was a bonus. The beds are extremely comfy and you can easily kick back and relax.

Cute and comfortable cottage!

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our long weekend at Magnolia Cottage. My teenage children adored the house and our dog loved the garden, the sunroom where she slept and the park across the road. The owner was easy to contact and responded promptly to all my queries. The location was fantastic for everything we wanted to do in Canberra. We look forward to visiting again when the garden is in bloom.

Pet Purrrrrrrrrfect

A note from Sir Arthur,

Every now and then I like to take my favourite humans on holiday and they were very happy with the holiday house I chose for them in Canberra. Magnolia Cottage has the best back yard with wonderful places to explore and it was safe and secure so I knew nothing could get in and get me. There was a lovely sun room that I could have my dinner in and sleep in and I was allowed to sit on my blanket on the floor in the sitting room to watch TV. I noticed there were lots of games to play in the sun room cabinet but we didn't have time for that. I also liked the large park just across the road. Very interesting smells in there and lots of rosellas, cockatoos, peewees, magpies and tons of other birds to watch out for. At the end of the street and across the road there is another big park I took my humans to. My favourite humans really liked the rustic charm of this heritage listed property and found all amenities adequate for their needs. Comfy warm beds for five and a cot, good appliances, some basic supplies for that much needed cuppa when we arrived and most important the best shower. My humans also really liked Ainsley shops. Magnolia Cottage is really close to everything in Canberra you might want to see and on my walks I noticed lots of bus stops. The owner was so lovely and very easy to communicate with and I recommend this holiday house to any dog traveling with their favourite humans. I'm looking forward to leaving you some mail next year. Love Sir Arthur Fox.

Home from home

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we opened the door we felt welcome. It was like walking into a friend's home and feeling at ease - so much more valuable than the latest, shiniest gadget and the fear that we would damage something. The location is perfect with easy access to the centre of town, local shops and, being Canberra, all the wealth of attractions on offer. Perfect.

Lovely cottage in historical part of Canberra

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed out stay at magnolia cottage. We appreciated the convenience and thoughtfulness of the little extras provided like the books and kitchen essentials. The magnolias were still blooming in the garden.

Owner's Response: I'm pleased you enjoyed your stay and glad the magnolia was out in bloom - it's a glorious sight and so brief, as well as the ixias and sparaxis. The rocket is truly finished and is replaced with neat tomatoes and strawberry plants in the back now. Thank you for your comments.
