Photos and Description of this Annapolis holiday cottage

Secluded Screened Porch & Fenced Outdoor Area. Water taxi nearby.USMC family.

This quaint storybook Vintage Cottage perched on a corner cul-de-sac is "City Inspected" and the BEST vintage Sears & Roebuck-type 50s cottage in Annapolis! The cottage is touted by guests as “just plain sweet!”

The cottage is available year-round, and to make your planning easy, a handy area Planning Guide is emailed to you upon making your reservation.

One block away you will see $750,000 townhouses, $1.5 single family homes and many charming renovated bungalows and cozy watermen cottages, creating a wonderful mix of architecture and lifestyles in our walk-able community.

You will love how easy your arrival is. Simply off-load your belongings onto the screened porch, replete with wicker rockers and a great benefit during inclement weather, and then grab a beverage and unpack at your leisure.

You, your family & friends will love how this cottage has been restored. The original charm remains and is complimented with modern amenities. Featured are original pine floors, southern-style plantation shutters and cross-room breezes. Built for the Camp Parole soldiers and their families, the cottage provides a cozy, comfortable home-away-from-home.

If you love nature and enjoy the outdoors, you will appreciate the secluded grass-to-garden yard that is certified by the National Wildlife Federation and the Bay-Friendly Organization. We strive to be "green."

Especially for guests, parking is right in front of the cottage and the parking is free—a real luxury in Annapolis.

Be ready to relax on the 3-season screened porch, link up to the fast WIFI and enjoy the fenced gated yard.

Then toss on your favorite walking shoes and stroll to the California tapas restaurant or the local “rib” pub and take in a few shops along the way. You can also walk to several good vantage points for viewing the fireworks and December lighted boat parade. Walk 10-15 minutes (or ride the water taxi or free e-shuttle or bicycle rickshaw) to the Historic waterfront and GATE 1 of the U.S. Naval Academy.

This really sweet hideaway in Maryland’s Capital City is perfect for spending your holidays, reunions, celebrating life events and, being the National sailboat Capital, taking in the annual boat shows. If you are coming for Academy events or visiting your Midshipman, your family will find the cottage decorated in proper Navy or Marine regalia for your visit.

The cottage is mindful of Key West and a blender is available to mix your favorite concoction that 'helps you hang on.' So, choose your own quaint, private conversation nook, listen to the quiet sounds of nature and get ready to make some new memories.

During colder weather, cuddle outside around the wood-burning fire pit and enjoy toasting marshmallows, being 'one' with nature, the stars, moon and the sounds of our bustling maritime city.

When "setting up house" for your vacation, the vintage 70s kitchen is conveniently located to the dining room. The kitchen's high-top cafe table is an inviting place where friends hang out to chat with you.

The living room, with its traditional leather sofa & chair may remind you of ‘Papa’ aka Earnest Hemingway. I've been told by many that the 6' antique wicker sofa with plush down-filled cushions is the perfect place to nap or simply relax.

The dining room and living room are one open area with the bathroom, studio and den just steps beyond.

There are two sleeping areas on the 1st floor that work well when utilized as daytime sitting rooms then converted to bedrooms. The den has a Queen futon & the studio a double pull-out sofa bed. Each has windows, ceiling fans and plenty of light.

There are also two twin-sized pop-up Ottoman roll-a-ways available making for very cozy sleeping arrangements if you choose to use them.

If you are the master and the lady, tucked under the cozy eaves on the second floor awaiting your arrival is the romantic Master Queen bedroom with adjoining dressing room. Rock away your stress while you gaze at the moon through the skylight. Décor is a wool hand-hooked rug; antique pine chest and a ceiling fan for your comfort. A plush down comforter makes you feeling like you are sleeping on a cloud.

If you are a family with small children there is a Ciao portable high chair & a pack n play available.

For your furry family members, we accommodate dogs and supply duty bags. Please inquire for multiple dogs. A pet fee applies. The backyard is secluded with a 5' fence.

The cottage is available year round & also available for short-term & long-term. Monthly rentals welcome! We accept Legislative per diem and corporate relocation. We try to be as flexible as possible.

Hospitality awaits and welcomes you to a unique, personal opportunity to experience Annapolis, Maryland's Capital City!

About Yarrow

Hanging on the living room wall is a hand-embroidered vintage sampler with the quotation of 'Let me live by the side of the road & be a friend to man.'

The sampler depicts my love of hosting travelers. As the former owner of the Philadelphia B&B Reservation Service & co-author of The American Bed & Breakfast Cookbook, welcoming visitors is a real pleasure for me & simply the core of my being. I love to travel & enjoy making travel easy & fun for others.

Living in this dynamic City by the Chesapeake Bay is refreshing & invigorating.

The cottage has good bones & peaceful land. It is named 'Chi Rising,' which describes its positive energy, welcoming presence & solid, grounded feeling.

Renovating Chi Rising inside & out presented the challenge of removing old materials & updating applications of paint, flooring & comfort amenities like ceiling fans & additional lighting. When removing two old flooring layers in the kitchen, I was rewarded with the pleasant surprise of 12' knotty pine plank floor boards, that add authentic charm to the cottage.

Practicing 'green' while establishing perennial theme gardens with year-round seasonal color, texture & plants native to Maryland was a joy. Feng Shui principles & a 'grass to garden' design concept created harmony & a garden certified as 'Bay-Friendly' by the Maryland Cooperative Extension Office & as a National Wildlife Federation refuge.

Visit & use all the spaces at Chi Rising. It is your home while you are here. Enjoy Eastport, downtown Annapolis & all that awaits.

Yarrow purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Yarrow chose Maryland

Living in the heart of Eastport provides a stimulating lifestyle of cultural neighborhoods, bustling business enterprises and creative artisans & entrepreneurs. One word sums it up -- Location! All you need is within walking distance. Get in touch with the historic Maritime industry, get out on the Bay & taste a blue crab or two on an open deck somewhere on the water! This is what living is all about!

A very special adventure is a sunset sail on the Woodwinds-catch it at the Marriott back deck--be sure to reserve your spot. Visiting Annapolis during winter months? Bundle up & trek out to the back yard fire pit --warm blankets, wood & BBQ forks are provided. Walk to the Chart House or Carroll's Creek --each has a great bar with a floor-to ceiling fireplace overlooking the harbor -- get there early to get a seat!

The vibe of life's excitement abounds in Maryland's Capital City! Enriched by the U.S. Naval Academy, St. John's College, several sailing schools, museums, artisan dens and diverse restaurants & pubs. Visit us and experience our spirit, our passion and all we have to offer here on the Chesapeake Bay!

What makes this cottage unique

This cottage is a great gathering place for friends. And, we love dogs! A fenced yard offers unbridled running room.

Enjoy a cup of joe, host a graduation or wedding celebration or have a dinner party on the screened porch while watching cardinals, robins & squirrels going about their daily rituals of bathing & eating. Quite enjoyable.

The 3-season screened porch beckons an afternoon nap & evokes memories & dreams of Key West. There is a blender available to whiz up your favorite concoction to help you hang on, too. And, there is seating for 10 for dinner!

This cottage has a secluded yard that is fenced. When you arrive, park in front of the cottage & enter by walking through the lush cottage garden & around to the 3-season screened porch. There you can stash your luggage, grab a beverage & unpack at your convenience.

Unique to this cottage is charm! It is cozy, easy to live in & evokes relaxation. The gardens are 360 degrees around, so you can follow the sun or the moon & find a spot to gaze away. Inside, the cottage is filled with light & gentle, seasonal breezes that blow through wide windows. The cottage is a Sears & Roebuck-type model & was build in 1950. I renovated it myself & preserved the quaintness that adds to the charm. Furnishing are an eclectic collection gathered from antique barns & world-wide straw markets & unique curio shops. Juxtaposed to these is a traditional reproduction pine dining room table with hand-hewn spindle-back chairs. The cottage has all the modern trappings like flat screen televisions, f-a-s-t free wifi, & an extreme FIOS package with every channel. Did I mention FREE parking? Here the living is easy & fun. Book your visit with us and you will see!

Chi Rising is nestled in a whimsical garden located in Eastport, just 1.3 miles away from the Ego Alley waterfront in Annapolis. Fully fenced and private it was a great place for me and my husband and our two dogs to use as a home base for our week-long visit to our daughter and her hubby in Annapolis, the dogs thought they owned the place lol. The neighborhood is nice and the cottage has its own parking! The Owner, Yarrow is friendly and very helpful, the bed is comfortable and the living areas are very pleasant, especially the screened in porch in the back. There are a lot of little seating areas throughout the garden, along with a chiminea clay fireplace that Yarrow was kind enough to supply wood and a pressed log for. We have friends in the area and they stopped over for a little dinner, and we all sat around in the back yard around the fire enjoying the garden. We walked in to Annapolis every day and also to a fabulous baker, Baker & Co., just a few blocks from the cottage. The Welcome Basket filled with treats was a nice touch. Thanks Yarrow! #2015BLUERIDGEPARKWAYCRAWL

Owner's Response: Family & friend gatherings are especially delightful at this cottage. As mentioned, the back yard, screened porch, fire pit & yard games can fill many hours with joyful fun. The garden is secluded & quiet. The Fall season in Annapolis is worth a visit! The museums get on board with historical & seasonal events, creating excitement for all interests. And, the outdoor cafes are still open, providing great spots for people-watching. December holidays & New Year's Eve are hopping with many cold-weather activities throughout the City-- all within just a short walk. The Lighted Boat Parade in early December is a "must." Arrange a pre-parade meal, walk to the Spa Creek bridge to watch the parade of lighted boats & then gather back at the cottage for dessert & coffee. Blankets are provided for around the fire pit. Parade winners are announced via the City website at the conclusion of the parade. Repeat for New Year's Eve! Sounds like a good plan. And, fun for all ages!

A calm oasis within walking distance to action

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent a week in Annapolis and were glad to have chosen Chi Rising as our rental property. Yarrow is generous with staples and amenities and welcomes tenants into a space that offers beauty and comfort, quiet relaxation and a place to spread out in many ways. The screened-in back porch soon became our favorite place to read, relax, study brochures and maps, and to eat our meals as the song birds serenaded us or splashed in the bird bath. We walked to excellent Eastport restaurants. The drawbridge leading into historic Annapolis is an enjoyable short walk away. We appreciated being able to leave the car in off-street parking at Chi Rising and avoid traffic and parking concerns. Thank you, Yarrow, for offering so much to us during our stay.

Owner's Response: Holidays, reunions, games and family vacations in Annapolis area? Stow your keys! We have you covered here at the cottage. You can walk or call Chariots of Annapolis, EZ Cruiser or the Water Taxi to get you around Eastport or the Historic District and out West Street to the Arts & Entertainment District and USNA Stadium. Now is that fun or what? Of course, you can drive and park in any of the City parking garages, too. Have it your way AND create a great day for yourself! We just want you to have fun while you are staying here at the cottage.

Look elsewhere... more shabby than shabby chic, more old than charming....

  • 2 of 5

We needed housing while waiting for our home to be built. The homeowner was willing to accept us knowing we had 3 large dogs. I have stayed at many VRBO homes, but no experience has been as disappointing. Reviews dont tell the whole story.

-The property is in Eastport which we loved. We could walk to restaurants, coffee, downtown Annapolis (25 min walk)... The streets were quiet & a great place to walk dogs.

- Gave us a LT lease & allowed us to bring our 3 dogs.

-Really a 1BR 1BA house w/ a den & office that have old, rickety futons - no closets or doors on 2 areas described as BRs in the listing. The 1 BR is a converted attic that's not well insulated with window AC units that aren't adequate. You must climb very steep narrow stairs to get to the BR, but the bath is on the main floor... not safe if you need to use the facilities in the middle of the night.

-Right next to rough area, public housing 1 block away. 3 incidents w/ police in bullet proof vests during our stay.

-House is packed full of tired, shabby decor... barely any place to put anything as most surfaces are covered with fake plants, trinkets, etc.

-Rodent & insect problems. We often found rodent droppings on the counters & in the living room.

-Oven is a fire hazard. The door wont open all the way. Also, the lettering on the knobs have worn off, so you can't read the settings.

-Bath tub constantly backed up on us.

-Cottage wasn't up to code before & during our stay. This was not disclosed to us before we checked in. It failed inspections with the city of Annapolis that were not remedied before we checked in (illegal deadbolts & broken GFI outlet in bathroom). We had to accommodate electricians & inspectors. She didn't want us in the property during the inspections, so I can only make assume what that meant.

-The owner lives in the property when it's not rented out. When it is, she lives above the garage at the back of the property. While she was there she was polite, but it is definitely not 100% privacy. She shares the trash cans, etc.

-Because of the dogs, she charged a substantial cleaning fee & damage deposit & made us buy damage insurance. She withheld an exorbitant amt of the deposit but didnt subtantiate the damage or how she calculated the # despite multiple requests. She charged for oven cleaning, which we rarely used (see above) even though we paid a cleaning fee. She separately made an insurance claim for a higher amount. Clearly trying to take advantage...

Owner's Response: This 50s vintage cottage was built for the soldiers & their families stationed at Camp Parole, following the era of Herbert Hoover's1928 Presidential Campaign, with its infamous slogan of "a chicken in every pot & a car in every garage." Referred to as a 1-1/2 story cottage, you will find all the nooks & crannies one would expect in a cottage reminiscent of grandma's summer cottage. During renovation, 12" pink plank floors were uncovered, a highly coveted find; Solid pine doors, too. Updated were the bathroom with its nautical décor, gas appliances & the usual cosmetic updates like fresh paint. A three-season screened porch, replete with a porch fan & wicker/wrought-iron furniture, overlooks the yard with a chiminea, gas grill & plenty of seating for family & friends. A River Birch tree provides a shady canopy & interesting peeling parchment bark. The yard & gardens are designated National Wildlife Federation areas where butterflies, birds, and of course squirrels, move the energy around. Unwanted critters are kept at bay with outdoor pest control. A front cottage garden provides a way station for Monarchs & year-round color bursting from every corner. In the cottage is a guest book holding family memories from guests who stayed during USNA events, graduations, anniversaries, weddings & other hallmark celebrations of life. On this site are many reviews to browse through where you will experience a broad array of comments. I hope you enjoy them & find that the cottage may meet your needs during your next visit to Annapolis.

Cute cottage, convenient location

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at the cottage. The front and back gardens added so much to our week long visit. They are totally fenced in for safety. The cottage is homey and unique. I judge many of my rentals on the quality of the linens and the sheets were soft and the towels thick and fluffy. The kitchen is well stocked, but if you stay here and plan to do a fair amount of cooking, bring your favorite nonstick pan. I forgot mine and burned a lot of scrambled eggs. The neighborhood is diverse and the neighbors friendly. We met many during our stay. You can walk to downtown Annapolis, but it was a little further than my short legs were willing to walk. I didn't mind paying $5 to park at a downtown garage. Yarrow was very nice, answered all of my questions, and was very helpful with her suggestions of things to do during our stay.

Owner's Response: I really appreciate tips from guests, so non-stick skillets are on the way! Thank you, Heather. The kitchen is fully accessorized with pots, pans & Crate & Barrel white dinnerware. There is also picnic ware, seasonal linens & some holiday décor available to spice up your festivities. The backyard is a hidden oasis, shaded for three seasons & active with birds singing. Walking around town is subjective to the type of walking you wish to do. Eastport's restaurant row along the water is a 8-10 minute walk. Continue across Spa Creek bridge for a full beautiful view & around the harbor in another 8-10 minutes. There are several optional transportation modes available from rickshaw bicycles, water taxi, circulator trolley & taxi cabs so you can mix it up ..a little walking & some transit. There is free street parking along Restaurant Row/Severn Avenue so you can drive & park & then stroll along. Annapolis is quite beautiful during December AND the City holds Midnight Madness Shopping Thursdays & the Lighted Boat Parade. Stick around for the fireworks display on New Year's Eve!

Owner's Response: Thank you Tamara. So glad you enjoyed your visit & added a review for other travelers. Sitting on the screened porch & viewing the gardens in the privacy of a song-bird habitat is an oasis most anytime of the year & particularly colorful in Spring, Summer & Fall. There are many nearby attractions, restaurants & shops via a slow stroll. Charming Annapolis sailboats are seen everywhere with their colorful jibs. This sweet cottage is even just three blocks from the US Post Office. Make your reservation & see for yourself. We welcome you.

Very cosy and pet friendly

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I and our dog Simba stayed at this cottage for 6 weeks while waiting to get a permanent house. This house is great and both front and back yard is cosy and nice. The neighbors are very kind and there's not a lot of traffic around the cottage. The size of the cottage fitted us well and Yarrow was the best host ever. She answered very quickly our questions and showed a hospitality of higher class, she is very nice and very helpful.

You can easily walk to downtown Annapolis or enjoy Eastport's nice areas and restaurants.

So glad you enjoyed your stay & walking to Vin 909 for the unique experience & wonderful tapas. Guests enjoy the two rooms that convert from sleeping to sitting areas-- adds conversation areas. Spring, Summer & Fall...the screened porch is THE place to enjoy. Come visit us! Love to host you.
