Photos and Description of this Annapolis holiday cottage

Secluded Screened Porch & Fenced Outdoor Area. Water taxi nearby.USMC family.

This quaint storybook Vintage Cottage perched on a corner cul-de-sac is "City Inspected" and the BEST vintage Sears & Roebuck-type 50s cottage in Annapolis! The cottage is touted by guests as “just plain sweet!”

The cottage is available year-round, and to make your planning easy, a handy area Planning Guide is emailed to you upon making your reservation.

You will appreciate how this cottage has been restored. The original charm remains and is complimented with modern amenities. Featured are original pine floors, southern-style plantation shutters and cross-room breezes. Built for the Camp Parole soldiers and their families, the cottage provides a cozy, comfortable home-away-from-home

One block away you will see new $750,000 townhouses, $1.5 single family homes and many charming renovated bungalows and cozy watermen cottages, creating a wonderful mix of architecture and lifestyles in our walk-able community.

This really sweet hideaway in Maryland’s Capital City is perfect for spending your holidays, reunions, celebrating life events and, being the National Sailboat Capital, taking in the annual boat shows. If you are coming for Academy events or visiting your Midshipman, your family will find the cottage decorated in proper Navy or Marine regalia for your visit.

Getting settled in is easy, starting with the free parking right in front of the cottage. Simply off-load your belongings onto the screened porch (a comforting benefit during inclement weather) and then grab a beverage and unpack at your leisure.

If you love nature and enjoy the outdoors, you will appreciate the secluded grass-to-garden yard that is certified by the National Wildlife Federation and the Bay-Friendly Organization. We strive to be "green."

Be ready to relax on the 3-season screened porch, link up to the fast WIFI and enjoy the fenced gated yard. Choose your own quaint, private conversation nook, indoors or outdoors, listen to the quiet sounds of nature and get ready to make some new memories.

During colder weather, cuddle outside around the wood-burning fire pit and enjoy toasting marshmallows, being 'one' with the stars, moon and the sounds of our bustling maritime city.

When you are itching to explore, toss on your favorite walking shoes and stroll to the California tapas restaurant or the local “rib” pub and take in a few shops along the way. You can also walk to several good vantage points for viewing the holiday fireworks and December lighted boat parade. The Historic waterfront and GATE 1 of the U.S. Naval Academy are one mile away. Walk, ride the water taxi, or drive part way and park free near the bridge. Walking rewards you with pleasant views and breezes off the Chesapeake Bay.

When "setting up house" for your vacation, the vintage 70s kitchen is conveniently located to the dining room. The kitchen's high-top cafe table is an inviting place where friends can hang out to chat with you.

The living room, with its traditional leather sofa & chair may remind you of ‘Papa’ aka Earnest Hemingway. I've been told by many that the 6' antique wicker sofa with plush down-filled cushions is the perfect place to nap or simply relax.

The dining room and living room are one open area with the kitchen, studio, den and bathroom just steps beyond.

There are two sleeping areas on the 1st floor that work well when utilized as daytime sitting rooms and converted to bedrooms. The den has a Queen futon & the studio a double pull-out sofa bed. Each has windows, ceiling fans and plenty of light.

Tucked under the cozy eaves on the second floor awaiting your arrival is the romantic Master Queen bedroom with adjoining dressing room. Rock away your stress while you gaze at the moon through the skylight. There is a flat-screen TV, rockers and reading lamps. Décor is enhanced with wool hand-hooked rugs, an antique pine chest and a ceiling fan for your comfort. Plush linens and a down comforter make you feel like you are sleeping on a cloud.

If you are a family with small children there is a Ciao portable high chair & a pack n play available.

For your furry family members, we accommodate dogs and supply duty bags. Please inquire for multiple dogs. A pet fee applies.

The cottage is available year round & also available for short-term & long-term. Monthly rentals welcome! We accept Legislative per diem, corporate relocation and try to be as flexible as possible.

Hospitality awaits and welcomes you to a unique, personal opportunity to experience Annapolis, Maryland's Capital City!

About Yarrow

Hanging on the living room wall is a hand-embroidered vintage sampler with the quotation of 'Let me live by the side of the road & be a friend to man.'

The sampler depicts my love of hosting travelers. As the former owner of the Philadelphia B&B Reservation Service & co-author of The American Bed & Breakfast Cookbook, welcoming visitors is a real pleasure for me & simply the core of my being. I love to travel & enjoy making travel easy & fun for others.

Living in this dynamic City by the Chesapeake Bay is refreshing & invigorating.

The cottage has good bones & peaceful land. It is named 'Chi Rising,' which describes its positive energy, welcoming presence & solid, grounded feeling.

Renovating Chi Rising inside & out presented the challenge of removing old materials & updating applications of paint, flooring & comfort amenities like ceiling fans & additional lighting. When removing two old flooring layers in the kitchen, I was rewarded with the pleasant surprise of 12' knotty pine plank floor boards, that add authentic charm to the cottage.

Practicing 'green' while establishing perennial theme gardens with year-round seasonal color, texture & plants native to Maryland was a joy. Feng Shui principles & a 'grass to garden' design concept created harmony & a garden certified as 'Bay-Friendly' by the Maryland Cooperative Extension Office & as a National Wildlife Federation refuge.

Visit & use all the spaces at Chi Rising. It is your home while you are here. Enjoy Eastport, downtown Annapolis & all that awaits.

Yarrow purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Yarrow chose Maryland

Living in the heart of Eastport provides a stimulating lifestyle of cultural neighborhoods, bustling business enterprises and creative artisans & entrepreneurs. One word sums it up -- Location! All you need is within walking distance. Get in touch with the historic Maritime industry, get out on the Bay & taste a blue crab or two on an open deck somewhere on the water! This is what living is all about!

A very special adventure is a sunset sail on the Woodwinds-catch it at the Marriott back deck--be sure to reserve your spot. Visiting Annapolis during winter months? Bundle up & trek out to the back yard fire pit --warm blankets, wood & BBQ forks are provided. Walk to the Chart House or Carroll's Creek --each has a great bar with a floor-to ceiling fireplace overlooking the harbor -- get there early to get a seat!

The vibe of life's excitement abounds in Maryland's Capital City! Enriched by the U.S. Naval Academy, St. John's College, several sailing schools, museums, artisan dens and diverse restaurants & pubs. Visit us and experience our spirit, our passion and all we have to offer here on the Chesapeake Bay!

What makes this cottage unique

This cottage is a great gathering place for friends. And, we love dogs! A fenced yard offers unbridled running room.

Enjoy a cup of joe, host a graduation or wedding celebration or have a dinner party on the screened porch while watching cardinals, robins & squirrels going about their daily rituals of bathing & eating. Quite enjoyable.

The 3-season screened porch beckons an afternoon nap & evokes memories & dreams of Key West. There is a blender available to whiz up your favorite concoction to help you hang on, too. And, there is seating for 10 for dinner!

This cottage has a secluded yard that is fenced. When you arrive, park in front of the cottage & enter by walking through the lush cottage garden & around to the 3-season screened porch. There you can stash your luggage, grab a beverage & unpack at your convenience.

Unique to this cottage is charm! It is cozy, easy to live in & evokes relaxation. The gardens are 360 degrees around, so you can follow the sun or the moon & find a spot to gaze away. Inside, the cottage is filled with light & gentle, seasonal breezes that blow through wide windows. The cottage is a Sears & Roebuck-type model & was build in 1950. I renovated it myself & preserved the quaintness that adds to the charm. Furnishing are an eclectic collection gathered from antique barns & world-wide straw markets & unique curio shops. Juxtaposed to these is a traditional reproduction pine dining room table with hand-hewn spindle-back chairs. The cottage has all the modern trappings like flat screen televisions, f-a-s-t free wifi, & an extreme FIOS package with every channel. Did I mention FREE parking? Here the living is easy & fun. Book your visit with us and you will see!

Adorable, pet friendly, cozy cottage.

Chi Rising is nestled in a whimsical garden located in Eastport, just 1.3 miles away from the Ego Alley waterfront in Annapolis. Fully fenced and private it was a great place for me and my husband and our two dogs to use as a home base for our week-long visit to our daughter and her hubby in Annapolis, the dogs thought they owned the place lol. The neighborhood is nice and the cottage has its own parking! The Owner, Yarrow is friendly and very helpful, the bed is comfortable and the living areas are very pleasant, especially the screened in porch in the back. There are a lot of little seating areas throughout the garden, along with a chiminea clay fireplace that Yarrow was kind enough to supply wood and a pressed log for. We have friends in the area and they stopped over for a little dinner, and we all sat around in the back yard around the fire enjoying the garden. We walked in to Annapolis every day and also to a fabulous baker, Baker & Co., just a few blocks from the cottage. The Welcome Basket filled with treats was a nice touch. Thanks Yarrow! #2015BLUERIDGEPARKWAYCRAWL

Owner's Response: Family & friend gatherings are especially delightful at this cottage. As mentioned, the back yard, screened porch, fire pit & yard games can fill many hours with joyful fun. The garden is secluded & quiet. The Fall season in Annapolis is worth a visit! The museums get on board with historical & seasonal events, creating excitement for all interests. And, the outdoor cafes are still open, providing great spots for people-watching. December holidays & New Year's Eve are hopping with many cold-weather activities throughout the City-- all within just a short walk. The Lighted Boat Parade in early December is a "must." Arrange a pre-parade meal, walk to the Spa Creek bridge to watch the parade of lighted boats & then gather back at the cottage for dessert & coffee. Blankets are provided for around the fire pit. Parade winners are announced via the City website at the conclusion of the parade. Repeat for New Year's Eve! Sounds like a good plan. And, fun for all ages!

A calm oasis within walking distance to action

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent a week in Annapolis and were glad to have chosen Chi Rising as our rental property. Yarrow is generous with staples and amenities and welcomes tenants into a space that offers beauty and comfort, quiet relaxation and a place to spread out in many ways. The screened-in back porch soon became our favorite place to read, relax, study brochures and maps, and to eat our meals as the song birds serenaded us or splashed in the bird bath. We walked to excellent Eastport restaurants. The drawbridge leading into historic Annapolis is an enjoyable short walk away. We appreciated being able to leave the car in off-street parking at Chi Rising and avoid traffic and parking concerns. Thank you, Yarrow, for offering so much to us during our stay.

Owner's Response: Holidays, reunions, games and family vacations in Annapolis area? Stow your keys! We have you covered here at the cottage. You can walk or call Chariots of Annapolis, EZ Cruiser or the Water Taxi to get you around Eastport or the Historic District and out West Street to the Arts & Entertainment District and USNA Stadium. Now is that fun or what? Of course, you can drive and park in any of the City parking garages, too. Have it your way AND create a great day for yourself! We just want you to have fun while you are staying here at the cottage.

A disappointment

  • 1 of 5

We arrived at the Cottage around 6:30 pm, already dark, and had to walk around the side of the house to enter through the back door. Very little light was given off by the solar lighting—thank goodness my son had a phone with a flashlight! From the moment I walked in the door, I was disappointed—it smelled musty and old, kind of like my Grandmother’s house. I must have booked this place back in the summer when I was under the influence of malignant brain tumors…and before I read the bad review.

There was NO dishwasher(5 people make a lot of dishes and my hands ended up dry and cracked); I felt this should have been pointed out in the vrbo description, no closet space to hang coats, dresses, shirts, no cupboard space to put away our Thanksgiving food. The refrigerator was slightly dirty and the meat compartment was full of plastic forks and spoons. The oven door banged against the doorway. The sitting area in the kitchen was used to hold food and not people to talk with, in other words—useless. The electrical outlets I would consider as a fire hazard. The one good point, she had every pot imaginable for cooking. The bathtub had a crack/chip that made it unhealthy to take a bath.

The beds—apparently there was no criticism of the upstairs bedroom (but my son and his pregnant wife could have just been sparing my feelings). My room was off the back porch, and the cold just seeped in all night, plus the futon was like sleeping on the hard floor. Whenever the furnace would kick in, it sounded like a train rolling through the house. The other futon was also uncomfortable and my second son and his pregnant wife actually drove back to their house in Ft. Meade for the second night. (She has allergies and the bed was uncomfortable.) We were basically living out of suitcases. My sons hugged me and said this would be a Thanksgiving to remember—yes, Mom’s folly after brain surgery…

Oh, it is also located in a not so good neighborhood, so no walking in the evening. I went back and read my contract with Yarrow. She charged me $20 per night for 2 extra people. The description reads that the cottage can house 6 people. Price gouging? None of the things were in her control to fix while we were there, so I didn’t bother to call her. I’ll let vrbo settle it.

Owner's Response: Dear traveler, In response to this review, I offer the following. Please read the other reviews as well. It is obvious that this guest got confused during her travel research & booked a property at the outset that didn't meet her expectations. Upon arrival the guest called looking for the second bathroom. This property has one bath! Later shesent a text inquiring about the pet fee & then declined. You may be an experienced traveler & already aware of these tips for choosing a short term rental, so you will know them. **The best way to choose a location is to read the description closely to determine if the accommodations work for your group. Then communicate with the owner with any questions & for further clarification. **This cottage is city-inspected annually to meet city code so all items are working properly. **This property is a 1-1/2 story vintage cottage built in 1950 to house families of six. **This guest & owner spoke & emailed on several occasions during the months leading up to the date regarding the kitchen & sleeping arrangements needed for their family's holiday. The Accommodations were explained just as the online description reflects. **It appears that the guest got confused when researching multiple properties, which is evident when thinking there is a dishwasher, a second bath & some other type of sleeping arrangements. **Although the price point may be higher, it is best to choose a rental that works for you. If a larger home with desired amenities is needed, rent that. Do not compromise on what is important to you & then be unhappy. For some of the specifics: **The path to the back screened porch is lit with led lights, a ground-light & party lights strung along the roof line of the open deck. Porch lights are on in the screened porch. In addition since it was holiday season, there were lights on an ornamental shrub near the screened porch. **Many amenities provided were not utilized in this case. The queen futon has a comfort-foam contour mattress topper that they choose not to use. Some people find futons & pull-out sofas uncomfortable. If that is the case, it is prudent to rent a property that doesn't have those. Again, rent what your group needs & wants so everyone is happy. **Seasonal comfort heaters & ceiling fans are located in each room should they be desired to supplement the whole house HVAC. The oven door opens just fine. **The cottage is cleaned by a professional service prior to each rental.

We loved the cottage! We stayed over Parent's Weekend in Annapolis.

The cottage was absolutely charming and very comfortable. The owner was incredibly responsive and very accommodating! You can imagine our glee when we walking into the cottage and found USNA decorations! We changed dinner plans out in town and invited another family over, the cottage was very comfortable and extremely charming! The décor was lovely, very unique. Our Mids had a blast going through the book shelf ! We really appreciated the hostess basket left for us to enjoy. I was incredibly impressed with supplies Yarrow left in case we forgot anything! I would strongly recommend this site for parents or small families visiting Annapolis!!! We loved out weekend in Annapolis! thank you

Owner's Response: It is rewarding to know that the thought put into providing a meaningful "home away from home" is appreciated. Communicating with guests starts with the reservation. I get to know them, why they are coming to Annapolis and seek ways to personalize the cottage for them. As the saying goes..."I want to own a house by the side of the road and be a friend to man."

Owner's Response: This renovated vintage cottage is cozy and comfortable, reminiscent of the 1950s. When groups stay here, they find ample room for private conversations in the living room, dining nook and on the seasonal screened porch. In addition, the two sleeping areas on the first floor conveniently convert to conversation areas during the day. The master bedroom is tucked away under the eaves on the private second floor. Parking is free and walking through the neighborhoods puts you at the doorsteps of a tapas and a rib restaurant, among others, a coffee house, good viewing places for fireworks and other events. Please read through the cottage description on this site to see all the amenities. Considering staying here. You will enjoy your visit.
