About this property

Country bakehouse Accommodation

Carol invites you to enjoy a relaxed stay at the Spalding "Country bakehouse Accommodation". The century old bakehouse residence has been tastefully renovated, blending antiques and modern furnishings for style & comfort.
Country bakehouse is a unique historic Baker's Residence, full of history & charm.

Spalding is central to the wine region of Clare, the historic Copper mining town of Burra, the Jamestown forest & Crystal Brook - well known for its Bakery. Country bakehouse Accommodation provides a perfect venue for day trips to towns in the lower Flinders Ranges and a central base for walkers and bike riding enthusiasts on the Mawson and Heysen trails which meet at Spalding. Uniquely situated between 4 rivers & the Bundaleer Reservoir, your minimum 2 night stay includes a "catch & release" free Permit for Trout fishing on the Broughton River.

Continental Breakfast provisions are included in the tariff and a well- equipped, country kitchen and gas BBQ are provided for your convenience.

Couples, families, walking groups and bike riders are welcome.

The Country bakehouse is an ideal place for romantic couples to share a weekend, families to stay for short breaks & holidays or trail walkers to spend a comfortable night after a brisk walk on the Heysen & Mawson Trails. We provide a "home away from home" with lots of interesting reading materials, family board games, DVD's and a large digital screen with satellite TV.

Attached to the residence, in the old bakehouse is an extra teen retreat room. This room is ideal for extra family members with a queen and two single beds provided.

Why not take a weekend break, go fishing or photograph the scenic Broughton River, visit wineries or coffee shops in the Clare Valley or explore dugouts and underground tunnels at the historic mining town of Burra.

Travel North through Jamestown to visit the Railway Museum at Peterborough or South to the Historic town of Mintaro to lose yourself in the Maze or make a visit to Martindale Hall. Because we are central to so many Historic towns we are able to provide a comfortable retreat at the end of a day exploring the Mid North of SA.

Fishing & Small Town Experience

The Country bakehouse is situated in the small town of Spalding,178km north of Adelaide and on the fringe of the Clare Valley. The Heysen & Mawson trails meet at Spalding and we have excellent sporting facilities including a Summer swimming pool, oval, tennis courts, parks and playground. There are historic Churches a Post Office and Primary School. The General store Cafe is open 7 days for take-a-way food & great coffee, & meals are available Thursday- Sunday at the Spalding Hotel.

The Fresh Water river flows through Spalding to join the Broughton downstream. Visitors can enjoy the river scenery and your accommodation includes a "catch & release" permit for trout fishing enthusiasts. You may not catch a trout or a cod but you could enjoy a day out along the river exploring the pools & why not take a picnic on a Spring day.
The Bundaleer Reservoir was opened in 2016 for Recreational fishing.

We stayed two nights in this lovely quirky cosy house. The host, Carol, really is the loveliest person, she told us many interesting facts about spalding. So many lovely little touches at this place, just loved it!

Surprisingly good
Spalding is a very remote town but this property was surprisingly good. It is lovingly maintained, very clean, and has lots of thoughtful touches. Such as the continental breakfast, fruit bowl, and bathroom essentials. It also had games and dvds for the kids, and a nice sunny spot in the garden to sit with a cup of tea. Everything we needed.

About the host

Hosted by Carol Matters

Host profile image
My names is Carolyn Matters and I have been in business as an accommodation provider and B&B owner for almost 16 years. My previous Profession was a Primary School teacher, working for the Education Dept. of SA. I was a classroom teacher for 48 years but decided on a "sea change" for my retirement. Being always interested in old historic buildings, interior decorating, art and photography, the Historic 1909, Spalding baker's Shop & residence held fond memories from my childhood. When it came on the market in 2007, I decided it was time to start my next chapter in life.
Christmas 2007, we accommodated our first guests and Country bakehouse had to be managed around my work as a teacher until 2011, when I retired from Clare Primary School and became the full time owner & manager of Country bakehouse accommodation.
Sadly, my husband & life partner, Geoff, passed away in 2016 so now I have to do everything myself. We will see what happens in the future.

Why they chose this property

The old Spalding Bakery had a charming character residence attached where all previous bakers had resided from 1909 -1980. Step inside & it "has a sole" as one of my guests said to me. It was peaceful and it was filled with warmth from the afternoon's sunsets. My memory as a child, the Bakery with its warm bread from the ovens & sticky glazed fresh buns and my great grandmother in her fur coat, giving me a silver three pence to spend.
Country bakehouse is conveniently situated right in the main street of Spalding. It is opposite the Spalding Hotel for meals & drinks. The cafe/ general store is just a walk away & they provide excellent coffee & lunches for travelers. We have the River & Reservoir for fishing enthusiasts and the Heysen & Mawson Trails meet in Spalding.
We are also centrally located between Mid North Tourist towns for site seeing and scenic drives.

In 2006, there was no accommodation available in Spalding, apart from the Spalding Hotel & groups of trail walkers had to camp in the park on cold Winter nights. Some of the hikers arrive on foot, without a car so need a warm bed & a meal. My husband wanted the residence for fishermen to stay but I wanted to renovate to provide a comfortable stay for weekend tourists and travelers.

Many tourists travel from Interstate, Victoria and NSW, North to Alice & Darwin, or West to Perth. Spalding is central & provides the gateway to Port Augusta & further North or West. We are a friendly small town who welcome tourists & many caravans stop off & park at the beautiful green town oval for a few days and enjoy our small town hospitality.
