Sea Zen Great Ocean Road - luxury and romance

Bedrooms Studio
Space 20 m²
Property type studio
Minimum Stay 1 - 4 nights

About the property

Sea Zen is a luxury studio for couples to experience a romantic holiday.

Experience the Art of Great Ocean Road Living. Your private retreat, just 100m from the crashing waves.

Sea Zen is a luxury studio inspired by Japanese elements, custom designed for couples who want the ultimate romantic getaway on the Great Ocean road. Separation Creek is part of Wye River, deep in wilderness, rugged and remote from busy towns.

Pamper yourself in the steam shower, with aromatherapy oils. Then slide back the shoji screens, slip into the spa and have your skin tingle with a million tiny bubbles. You can slide up the windows and be surrounded by the soothing sound of the sea, or stay in your own private sanctuary.

In winter there is a warming wood fire, the windows are double glazed and you will be snug inside.

These things (above) set us apart, but there are many more. Please ask us for our list - 'THE AMAZING 35 EXTRAS YOU GET AT SEA ZEN'.

On the balcony, relax and watch the waves with a drink. You may be visited by some Crimson Parrots, or sometimes Black Cockatoos visit the trees nearby. The rare Rufus Bristlebird is a frequent visitor in this quiet hamlet. If you are lucky you will see a Koala in the trees nearby.

For couples who like to take their pet away with them, we are pet friendly. Small dogs by arrangement. You get our pet info about local vets, dog beaches etc

At Sea Zen you have a complimentary set of extras available nowhere else:

- Complimentary loan mobile for non-Telsta mobile owners for great reception

- Sea Zen Food lovers guide - our personal recommendations for local eating experiences

- See and Do guide - our personal recommendations for the best local experiences

- Library of books on Japanese culture and our local birds

- Aromatherapy oils, fluffy robes, huge fluffy towels.

Our guests say:

"We were blown away by the steam shower and ocean views from the spa! - Kate"

"Truly a 5 star experience - Cathy"

In summer the sand is a lazy one minute stroll away, a quiet beach known just to the locals, a kilometre from the popular Wye River Beach. Enjoy a surf in the vigorous waves or just loaf on the sand.

If the mood takes you, grab a fishing rod from our rack and try your luck off the rocks for Whiting or cast from the beach for Salmon.

Go for a wander along the beach to the township of Wye River. Enjoy a sensational coffee at the famous Wye River General Store and try the locally cooked cakes. Our favourite is the Polish Donuts, a recipe passed to the baker from his grandmother.

You might buy a freshly baked French baguette and some Goats cheese and bring it back to Sea Zen for a simple lunch with wine on the balcony.

You might read a book on the day bed looking out to sea, or just unwind and have a snooze.

In winter there is a wood fire, the windows are double glazed and you will be snug inside. You can go for a bracing walk on the beach or curl up on the couch with a glass of wine. Enjoy one of our inhouse movies or watch one of the latest movies on Foxtel.

For those who like to stay connected there is free wireless internet.

If you like to cook, you have your own well equipped kitchenette.

At night you might like to dine out at the Wye Beach hotel which has fabulous pub food. Our favourite is the Mauritian curry. There is a good selection of local beers like Prickly Moses and the local ciders are worth a try. The view from the pub balcony is one of the best views on the Great Ocean road.

In summer, the Wye General Store also does evening meals. Lorne is just 20 minutes away for a wide selection of cafes, restaurants and hotels. Our favourite is the very popular Chopsticks.

The Wye General also does a relaxed breakfast and lunch. Visitors come from Geelong and Lorne just for the drive to a sensational Brunch.

The Art of Great Ocean Road Living involves making the most of the fabulous Great Ocean Road itself.

The road in both directions from Separation Creek is the most spectacular part of the Great Ocean Road, high above the rocks below.

Any excuse to travel the road will be rewarding. Every trip is a different experience: different light, different patterns of waves, different sounds.

Our Information pack gives you our tips for the best places to see and things to do. Some popular trips are as follows.

One day you can get up early and drive the road to the 12 Apostles and enjoy a coffee in Apollo Bay on the way back.

A shorter day is the Otways loop. Head to Apollo Bay, buy a lobster or two for dinner, visit Maites Rest forest walk and return via Turtons Track forest and waterfall drive.

You are guaranteed to see Koalas in the wild at Kennett River on the way. Living at Separation Creek, you will often hear one or see one, when they choose to show themselves!

If you have a week you can visit the Otway Fly, Lake Elizabeth platypus, the Forrest Brewery, the waterfalls, the Lightstation or other gems hidden away in the Otways. Places like the Redwood Forest are secrets known to few - we show you how to get there.

For walkers, the Great Ocean Walk has a series of day trips and overnight walks. The Apollo Bay Visitor Information Centre has updates on local conditions and attractions.

We suggest you make Separation Creek your base for 3 days, or more if you can. Pamper yourself for a while. You deserve it.

Split weekends by arrangement only, for which full weekend rate will apply. eg Thu/ Fri or Sat/Sun

Peak/ Hols rates vary. Payments card only.

About Rex Brown

We are living the dream at Separation Creek, in our house at the rear of our gorgeous Sea Zen studio.

We live a quiet life and love to greet our guests then leave them to enjoy their stay in total privacy.

It is a long way from our former corporate lives for Sibylle and myself, and we get involved in the local community and wildlife conservation. I am the chair of the local tourism association and Sibylle started up our local street libraries as well as her international Snow leopard conservation work.

Most days we will take our frisky Bordoodle 'Tanook' for a walk on the beach.

Being dog lovers, we encourage our Sea Zen guests to bring their dog as part of the family.

Rex Brown purchased this studio in 2010

Why Rex Brown chose Separation Creek

In 2011, we built Sea Zen from the bare earth, to be the ultimate place for romantic couples to stay for a luxury experience that could not be replicated anywhere else.

The land we chose was close to the beach with a glorious view, but back from the Ocean Road enough to miss the road noise, and to nestle into the trees and local gardens.

The design is heavily influenced by Japanese style with giant Shoji Screens, Japanese fabrics, Japanese Art and crockery.

The experience has none of the Japanese sleeping on the floor, but a sumptuous bed and decadent couch to give western comfort.

Sea Zen is totally unique. There is nothing is like it anywhere.

Builders who come and stay are impressed with the craftsmanship. We just love its feel. Occasionally we will journey back to Kyoto for inspiration for little ideas to freshen up and add new Art.

We hoped it would be popular, but didn't realise it would be the most heavily booked property in Wye River from the time it opened till the current day.

What makes this studio unique

Apart from the unique Japanese influenced design, we have a steam shower to pamper yourself and a spa to immerse yourself in, while overlooking the ocean.

After the pampering, you can sink into the feather cushion couch in front of the wood fire and watch some movies.

Some guests prefer a Zen experience, just sitting on the day bed overlooking the sea and become at one with nature. Or to read a book to the background sound of the sea.

Another delight is to wake up in the comfy bed and look out to the view of the sea.

A place for couples to take time just for themselves.

Puts the GREAT in Great Ocean Road

  • 5 of 5

Amazingly comfortable accommodation with all the amenities you will need for a short break or lengthy stay. We were provided a complimentary bottle of bubbly for my wife and I on our arrival for our anniversary getaway which was a nice personal touch. We will certainly be returning for a longer stay to take advantage of the local knowledge of Rex and Sybille and all the attractions and eateries in the region.

My partner and I had an amazing two nights stay at Sea Zen. The spa bath with a sea view is just pure zen. Peaceful and quiet, the accommodation has pretty much everything you need. Looking forward to come back to Sea Zen.

Awesome house

  • 5 of 5

Such a great little house. Really enjoyed our relaxing stay, reading the paper on the day bed while sipping a coffee with the sound of waves rolling in the background was the highlight. The steam shower and spa bath were perfect way to relax. Our little dog also enjoyed his stay with the beach and general store only a little stroll away,. Hope to be back very soon!

Amazing place to stay

  • 5 of 5

I have stayed here several times. I keep coming back because the views are beautiful no matter what the weather brings and the owners provide everything you could need.

I have brought a dog a few times and they provide towels and sheets for the pooch...and me! There's plenty of information for tourists and their directions to light the fire were perfect for this city girl. I was toasty warm whenever the weather was chilly.

Great spot for shutting the door and distressing but equally perfect for the adventurous types. I've been hiking many times on my visits but some visits I've bunkered down and read a book for 3 days! Highly recommend!

Become immersed in nature. The local king parrots will eat from your hand and 10 other types visit most days. You may even see a visiting Koala up close.

Stroll to the beach and along the rocks to the cafe at Wye River. You can also take the pretty Paddy's Path overlooking the ocean as you walk to Wye River.

You may want to take longer walks deep into the rainforest on the many safe tracks, or take the riverwalk up Wye River.

Our favourite drive is to Bespoke Harvest for a gourmet lunch, located in the pretty foodie town of Forrest an hour away via the coast road and the rainforest, then back through the pretty farms in Pennyroyal Valley to Lorne and home on the most picturesque clifftop road.

On other days we'll drive the half hour to Apollo Bay wharf area and buy a fresh Crayfish, divine!
